lehigh university brown and white vol 84 — no 20 bethlehem pa friday november 10 1972 xk6 -<»:.:: 1 soleri von eckardt differ in views of urban design by mary koltisko two radically different views of urban design were presented thursday evening in grace hall as artist and architect paolo soleri and washington post architecture critic wolf von eckardt shared in a dialogue on the new urban vision cities of the future and new directions in architecture soleri's concept of urban design is the arcology a form of ecological architecture which he explains as the complete living system for hosting all aspects of human life his book arcology the city in the image of man contains designs for 30 arcologies one of which is under construction in northern arizona dubbed arcosanti the community of 3,000 inhabitants will be the first urban en vironment of its kind only 10 acres of its four square miles will be used for construction the remaining land will become playgrounds parks and gardens soleri pointed out that he is not proposing a method but rather a methodology of construction his arcologies he said are not blueprints merely symbols suggesting how space could be organized in outlining the bases of his architectural principles he stressed two assumptions in any given system the liveliest quantum is also the most complex and in any given system the most complex quantum is also the most miniaturized von eckardt's criticism of soleri's arcologies was that soleri's work is pure art pure abstraction a large number of people living in a giant sculpture is not my idea of urban design . i have no objection to utopian visions but the visions to be relevant to our dilemma have to be concerned not with forms but with human beings soleri's concept of architecture said von eckardt is unrelated to human purpose b&w photo by mike pierce paolo sol kit i right debates the feasibility of ecological architecture zettlemoyer presents ideas for attracting better grads by scott penniman the general problem of getting good graduate students is not being alleviated said albert zettlemoyer university provost speaking wednesday to a meeting of the engineering college faculty zettlemoyer presented several ideas for attracting better engineering graduate students he said that one possibility would be a quicker ms degree program he also noted that there are presently too many barriers to the doctorate degree zettlemoyer mentioned that pocket scholarships are currently open to special graduate students he also men tioned the plan to provide funds for graduate students by giving them the opportunity to teach zettlemoyer reported to the faculty meeting that his office was having con siderable success with endowments he said that through foundation gifts 1.25 million was raised for the new chemistry building last week he also mentioned that another generous endowment may come through - - v about that endowment he said we may not get the bundle we're after but we may get a large part of it zettlemoyer would not reveal the sources of these en dowments explaining that it is their prerogative to make the announcement during the meeting the faculty passed a proposed general studies program in humanities and social sciences allowing students in the engineering college to broaden their backgrounds the general studies sequence begins in freshman year with six hours of english and continues in sophomore year with four hours of economics during the last we er six terms 15 additional hours are elected so that by the end of the senior year a student will have completed a minumum of 25 hours in general studies the program changes previous distribution requirements now allowing students to carry minors in fields in the humanities and social sciences george e kane professor of industrial engineering announced steps being taken to increase undergraduate enrollment in engineering kane reported that 28 members of the engineering faculty had been selected to work with the admissions office in introducing admission candidates b&w photo by bill pirk we are the people anthony st john far right assistant manager of labor relations at bethlehem steel argues that the interests of stockholders and workers of large corporations represent the interests of america other members of the panel are from left prof andrew weintraub mra marjorie marley lynn rentschler prof l reed tripp bill moran prof robert thornton randy bujcs 74 commits suicide in county prison a 20-year old lehigh junior hanged himself early tuesday morning in a cell at lehigh county prison randy a bujcs of 313 e church st had been in the county prison less than 24 hours after being returned to the prison from allentown state hospital an autopsy at sacred heart hospital in allentown revealed he died from asphyxiation caused by strangulation lehigh county coroner robert c weir ruled the death a suicide it was bujcs second suicide attempt since being admitted to the prison oct 6 on drug charges he was arrested during a may 31 drug raid on an apartment at 528 wyoming st allentown four other persons were also arrested a quantity of material believed to be heroin lsd and marijuana estimated to be valued at 4,000 was seized bujcs was charged with possession of narcotics and dangerous drugs he was arrested again in early sep tember on two charges of delivering panel disagrees on effects of labor-management ties a six member panel argued whether a new era in labor-management cooperation spelled trouble for the consumer the fiery debate sponsored by aiesec the national student business organization took place nov 2 in neville lounge members of the panel were economics profs andrew b weintraub robert j thornton and l reed tripp district director of the united steel workers bill moran assistant manager of labor relations and attorney for bethlehem steel anthony st john director of the lehigh valley needlework association lynn rentschler and local president of the united textile workers mrs marjorie marley moran and st john agreed that labor management relations were at an all-time high they cited improvements in grievance procedures and the establish ment of joint labor-management productivity commissions as examples of improved cooperation despite divergent views and interests there is still a great deal of common interest between traditional adversaries said st john one of those interests he said was to gain import quota legislation or voluntary quota agreements to protect steel industry profit margins and to provide jobs for steel workers weintraub questioned whether this would be a good thing for consumers the new cooperative effort he said could very well be a conspiracy against the public the areas of labor-management agreement impose a severe cost to the public he said tariffs and quotas will benefit management and the union people but that does not mean the government should conclude this is the best policy if the consumer has to pay higher prices for steel moran countered that although he agrees that there has to be free trade in the world the steelworkers and other unions were concerned with unfair competition moran pointed out that in many foreign countries governments subsidize their industries in order to compete with see provost page 4 see lehigh junior page 4 see eco profs page 7 see paolo soleri page 6
