vol 84 no 21 bethlehem pa november 14 1972 866-0331 lu news advisory board won't censor publication the duties of the lehigh university news advisory board and committee proposals for better communications between the alumni and the university were key topics at the forum com munications committee meeting friday three university alumni association executives h.t heckman chairman of alumni communications committee morgan cramer president of the alumni association and james niemeyer alumni association executive secretary were guests at the meeting there will be a meeting after every issue of the lehigh university news heckman stated this will enable the group of professionals the advisory board to help with any problems the editorial staff might have the group of professionals will be glad to meet with anyone who has ideas heckman added as he stated what his committee will do for the lehigh university news heckman is also a member of the advisory board of the new lehigh university news cramer stated that the board will serve as a critical review and niemeyer added that they would in no way censor the news cramer said he feels that the board will be consulted in the hiring of a new editor forum communications committee member mark kroll 74 described the need for improving relations between alumni and the university kroll stated we don't do enough to make visiting alumni feel comfortable here because they don't know where to go or which way to turn he proposed that the university extend the same benefits to alumni as they do to prospective freshmen he also added that alumni would like to hear what faculty as well as other alumni are doing kroll stressed the need for better com munications regarding the more in tellectual things that are going on now niemeyer said he felt that this type of information would be handled better in a newsletter than in the alumni bulletin he also added there has to be more thrust from the academic side he explained that in order to supply additional in formation of this type to alumni you need a couple of people who aren't bogged down with day-to-day functions prof robert barnes member of the forum communications committee suggested that the alumni might be in terested in some technical subjects he explained that one rather long and in b&w photo by gene smar prof charles brownstein forum to ask about standing of past motions the forum will hold its third meeting of the semester at 7:30 p.m tomorrow in the osbourne room of the uc with but one motion slated for a vote the most con troversy will probably center around questions addressed to the administration the newly formed operations com mittee has compiled a list of forum approved motions which they are not sure have been implemented the ad ministration will be asked to give a status report on each of these resolutions following is a list of the projects which will be questioned 1 the creation of an off campus housing authority operated by the university to acquire renovate lease and maintain off campus properties for students 2 new procedures for filling faculty slots requiring the administration to in form each college by dec 1 about the number of new slots which will be available and requiring the colleges to determine a five-year priority list of desired faculty slots by oct 15 3 a program allowing high school students to take courses at lehigh 4 ) a study to determine the feasibility of combining academic and residential facilities and another urging joint lehigh moravian-bethlehem facilities where practical 5 a resolution giving library acquisitions high priority 6 the overall review of the athletic program with a view toward cutting some varsity sports and some part-time staff to reduce costs 7 the grants-in-aid proposal allowing local poor to attend lehigh under a special b&w photo by gene smar one way which way — hope you know your way around campus already because if you don't this sign victory was nixon's and not the republican party's said prof charles brownstein in his analysis of the 1972 elections last wednesday in neville lounge brownstein assistant professor of government spoke on election 72 what happened and what does it mean covering statistics state elections and commenting on some of the assumptions already drawn by others about the meaning of nixon's re-election while nixon won overwhelmingly in the national election brownstein pointed out that the other races did not follow the same trend the republican party as a whole did not fare as well as the democratic party in state elections the democrats made substantial gains he said while the republicans received a number of losses looking at the polls brownstein said they had been just about correct in guessing the 61-38 per cent split in the national election the voting turnout was low he said with somewhere between 35 and 45 per cent of the american electorate not voting the actual number of voters was the largest in history 77 million brownstein said but that percentage-wise it was the lowest turnout since 1948 noting some assumptions already made about the election results brownstein commented on some which he called ridiculous one is the idea that people have moved from feeling that they are democrats to feeling that they are republicans brownstein said that no redistribution of partisanship has occured the idea that the corporate new-deal liberalism as represented by the democrats is dead is wrong according to brownstein who said it is represented by nixon too nixon's style may have changed he said but not his ideas he added that the republican party has co opted some of the democrats ideas another assumption the idea that nixon has adopted george wallace's style is unfair said brownstein he said that nixon simply picked up the vote which would have gone to wallace pointing out that nixon's 1968 southern vote combined with that of wallace give nixon's 72 southern vote brownstein discussed the reasons behind nixon's landslide victory which was very close to that of lyndon johnson in 1964 nixon he said is not particularly well-loved in terms of his image except in relation to mcgovern's image mcgovern is disliked by a huge proportion of the american electorate he said all-u complex program presented by dean quay william quay dean of student life reviewed the program for the lehigh athletic and convocation center at a priorities planning and resources committee sponsored meeting the program was drafted by members of a program committee who visited field houses arenas assembly halls and convocation centers of other universities throughout the nation the administration has expressed hope that the new complex will supplement taylor gymnasium which was constructed in 1913 and renovated in 1951 the new center will provide indoor inter-collegiate sports practice areas intramural play areas and more informal and recreational play space in addition the permitting the university to hold public events such as graduations major lectures performing arts concerts and inter-collegiate athletic contests the center will consist of two areas a field house pole vault shot put and high jump facilities 2 at least three full length basketball courts 3 volleyball courts 4 badminton courts 5 at least two and possibly four indoor tennis courts 6 a complete set of drop nets to permit indoor baseball practice 7 a floor arrangement to permit additional use for indoor football — and lacrosse practice 8 a universal weight lifting machine there will be 300 half lockers for men and 150 half lockers for women intramural use inter-collegiate teams will continue to use the varsity house serving as an annex to the field house may be an ice rink for both hockey and skating provided it is economically feasible the arena will serve as the spectator facility for the complex wrestling mat ches basketball games and non-athletic convocations will be presented in the arena it will be 75,000 square feet with possible dimensions of 300 by 250 feet the floor area will be composition-type similar to the floor of the field house it will measure 190 by
