lehigh university brown and white vol 84 — no 22 bethlehem pa friday november 17 1972 866-0331 detectives will be used against intruders on hill by karen ernst private detectives from the blum detective agency have been hired tocomb the hill on weekends stated robert moe inter fraternity council president in a sub committee meeting monday on underage drinking they are instructed to usher off campus any persons not carrying eollege id cards the subcommittee was formed by the community relations committee because of pressures from parents the northampton county children's bureau and the liquor control board the committee established three issues in the underage drinking problem groups of teenagers coming to the hill for a good time runaway girls looking for a refuge away from a bad home situation and an antagonism existing between town people and students under 21 moe related to the committee what the ifc has done to prevent groups of teenagers from getting into frat parties on weekends he stated that private detectives had been hired tocomb the hill to check id's on the previous weekend any persons without ids were escorted off campus the detectives will also be present for lafayette weekend moe recommended that any fraternity which couldn't stop a group of town people from entering should notify the campus police he also commented that the lcb is aware of the drinking on campus and because of recent pressure from the community would be apt to make a raid at any time because fraternity officers are responsible for all persons at a party the ifc hired the detectives to keep underaged townies out of the parties barbara soit coordinator for the university volunteers commented on the problem of b&w photo by gene smar where's your i.d the ifc has hired private detectives to ask people at weekend parties for their i.d cards this is to curb underaged drinking by teens from town bonfire and rally to get started tonight at 7:15 a cloud of smoke will cover the saucon valley athletic fields friday night as the lehigh hoopla interfraternity council residence halls council and the students activities council sponsor a bonfire to arouse spirit for the 108th lehigh lafayette football game associate director of physical education john steckbeck made his decision to proceed with the event despite evidence of some apathy on the part of some lehigh students the first match will be struck at 7:15 p.m bus transportation will begin in front of the taylor gym at 6 p.m on a shuttle basis preceeding the bonfire will be a parade led by the marching 97 the parade will begin about 6 p.m in front of lamberton hall it will pass through the freshman quad centennial i centennial 11 and end at taylor gym the steckbeck phenomenon will serve as master of ceremonies featured lafayette will burn lehigh students prepare for the 108th lehigh-lafayette football game with the annual bonfire tonight in saucon valley at 7 15 forced commuting proposal discrimination says campbell dean of residence clarence b camp bell said wednesday that forcing local students to commute was a form of discrimination campbell responded to a proposed resolution by the forum's residence subcommittee that calls for local students to commute because of a projected housing shortage next year the subcommittee discussed several proposed resolutions on the residence crisis freshman-upperclass integration in residence halls and expansion of the lehigh student body a resolution was passed stating that further expansion of the university student body should not take place without provisions for housing in residence halls fraternities or near campus campbell said that the resolution to force local students to commute would be discriminating against a certain class of individuals on the basis of geographical location he added that the resolution could very well have a serious effect on admissions to the university because local prospects would look elsewhere the proposed subcommittee resolution states that non-freshmen students both graduate and undergraduate whose homes are within twenty minutes traveling time of the campus shall not be allowed to rent a room in a residence hall if this causes undue hardship to a local student or the university suffers finan cially the policy would be discontinued many subcommittee members differed with campbell and supported the recommendation strongly the sub committee chairman said that an open hearing on the subject is scheduled for 4 p.m monday the projected housing shortage is a result of increased student enrollment and the fact that rh-11 will not be completed by next september campbell said that students would probably be placed in smags saucon married and graduate students apartment housing when asked about the inconvenience to students without cars campbell said some transportation is going to have to be provided bob hoerner 73 non-forum member of the subcommittee said that the residence office should develop some concrete plans for what is going to happen after next year he said that campbell's office should sit down and do some pre planning when asked whether his office has begun planning for rh-12 after completion of rh 11 campbell responded with a definite no the recognition that rh-12 is needed is certainly clear campbell said but no more has been done than to in vestigate possible sites professor george dinsmore chairman of the forum said we've got to catch up with ourselves campbell noted the simple fact is we are behind unless we get something together by 74 campbell continued we're definitely going to be behind william quay dean of student life expressed concern about undergraduates being housed in smags after spending the last five years planning graduate conflict arises over u forum closed meeting by jeff bloom controversy has developed over closed meetings of the student leadership of the forum charges of secrecy have been leveled by some concerned students who point out that the forum was founded upon concepts of openness and trust in the nov 14 issue of the brown and white a letter to the editor written by howard pol sky 73 was published discussing this secret meeting of a select few forum members held nov 9 at theta chi fraternity prof george dinsmore chairman of the forum attended the meeting he said that the focus of the meeting was what can we do to improve the forum calling the discussions a valuable exchange which will become manifest at the forum dinsmore said that the meeting was a student leadership function with some
