brown and white 866-0331 bethlehem pa friday december 8 1972 vol 84 — no 26 disinterest is a problem says one forum creator by larry dries the founding fathers of the forum returned to lehigh dec 5 and expressed their views at the forum's fall con vocation on the success of the forum's first two years of operation among the spring 70 activists who attended were mike golden don miles don parsons ken rilander todd tieger dave jackley and tim mclarnen rilander opened the discussion by giving his opinions concerning the formation of the forum rilander said that the forum was created to function as an information mechanism among the students faculty and administration the major problem which the forum faces rilander said is the lack of interest by the student body the forum is powerless without large numbers of students taking part in its activities he commented tieger said that the powers of the forum were diluted from what they were originally ment to be that is second in authority only to the legal powers of the trustees the administration should not have made some of its recent decisions tieger stated he cited the death of the lehigh news as an example of ex cessive administrative action mclarnen said he believed the limits of the forum's power were to be self determined the forum now in existence mclarnen said is discovering and setting the limits on its own authority a problem at this point golden said is the domination of the forum by the faculty in the beginning he noted the students sought to take power from the administration completely ignoring the fact that faculty interests were not iden tical with student interests the students must realize that the faculty cannot represent them golden said curtis clump professor of chemical engineering and past chairman of the forum stated that the forum has created an input into the decision—making process of the university and that the ad ministration has been receptive to forum decisions ferdinand beer chairman of mechanics and mechanical engineering and also a past chairman of the forum reiterated dr clump's statement calling the forum an information body which was not designed to overcome a specific group such as the administration faculty or students the forum has been effective b & w photo by tom scott past and present meet — past and present forum members express their views on the forum's performance in relation to its inaugural aims of two years ago gregory praises youth in allentown speech by jeff bloom you've got a big job baby and you don't got much time was the message of black comedian-social critic dick gregory to a predominately young crowd of ap proximately 450 in allentown wednesday night gregory was the top attraction in a program to benefit confront inc the youth counseling group of allentown and bethlehem which specializes in drug rehabilitation confront executive director and former professional folk singer nick guzzi sang folk songs and a local rock recording group button also performed in his speech at the agricultural hall at allentown fairgrounds gregory referred to the white youth of america as the nation's new niggers he claimed that jews italians irish poles catholics indians chicanos puerto ricans and blacks were all formerly groups of american niggers who preceeded the white youth in what he termed the white racist society gregory said america always needed a nigger according to gregory a nigger is the scapegoat used by gum-chewing beer-drinking pretzel chomping american society he called the white youth the most morally honest ethically dedicated group that ever existed in this country he added that they were faced with the problem of giving sanity back to an iasane nation proclaiming that the whole world is going stoned crazy gregory noted that for two weeks arthur bremer tried to convince the whole world he was crazy and they decided he was sane at the same time tom eagleton was trying to con vince the whole world he was sane and they decided he was crazy which means tom eagleton would have had a better chance of staying on the democratic ticket had he shot somebody to further emphasize his claim that society is going crazy gregory quipped b&w photo by mike pierce dick gregory campbell denies a housing crisis '; sees a slight shortage next year dean of residence clarence b camp bell denied that there will be a housing crisis next year speaking at a residence subcommittee meeting tuesday campbell noted that there will be a slight shortage but he added that it is not one that i would describe as a crisis only 67 undergraduates are likely to be housed in smags saucon married and graduate student housing next year campbell maintained he said the claim that 200 undergraduates would be housed in smags is unfounded bill jesse liaison with the ad ministration and assistant in the residence halls office had previously told the subcommittee that 200 un dergraduates would be affected because of increased enrollment due to coeducation the subcommittee has been operating on this assumption for the entire semester campbell cited figures which indicate a projected increase in enrollment of only 67 students for next year he said there are 3,548 full-time undergraduates this year next year he said the university projects an enrollment of 3,615 full-time students for 1974 the university projects 3,715 full-time students campbell said he said that with rh-11 completed by then there will be no housing problem campbell declared after the meeting that freshman male enrollment will be smaller next year he said that this does not indicate a conscious effort to reduce the number of male freshmen campbell said that it represents a return to old admission figures he pointed out that male freshman enrollment has been greater than usual the past few years campbell said the claim that the university's policy of increasing enrollment will create a crisis is a non existent issue we see no crisis over the jones report statements disputed by zettlemoyer by scott penniman what is being done about the jones report on the low morale of the student body nothing according to albert c zettlemoyer university provost zettlemoyer claimed that there are too many different variables involved in student morale to accept the jones report as fact he added that the report is over two years old and the university en vironment has been changed among the charges he denied were statements that the university traditionally hires faculty insensitive to students and that the faculty deliberately holds down overall cumulative average he argued that the conclusions drawn were subjective and did not necessarily follow from the data zettlemoyer noted that the university has gone co-ed since the report coeducation was one of the suggestions made in the report he added that in the report schools compared to lehigh were not actually similar to lehigh zettlemoyer objected to the publishing of the report in what he said was a deleted version i don't think it did any good to the community he said zettlemoyer claimed that the report's sampling was small and not necessarily representative he added that morale problems could be isolated to living groups or other factors that would distort figures andrew j edmiston director of see no crisis page 7 see gregory page 4 see zettlemoyer page 7 financial aid applications for financial aid for 1973-74 will be available on or after dec 11 in the financial aid office basement floor alumni building they should be picked up before christmas vacation so processing may be completed by the march 15 deadline this applies to all un dergraduates questions should be directed to mr stanford or mrs dwyer of the financial aid office last issue this will be the last issue of the brown and white during the fall semester publication will resume jan 19 the b&w staff wishes all in the university community a warm season's greetings
