dorm council elects officers market gain is anticipated hudson hawley must move by june 1 wilbur trust warns houses to find new quarters or buy homes 4 fraternities are affected by bank pool vol xlviii no 51 6 periods of observation strike at fraternities some hit twice mcmichael and bostock placed in top posts for coming year coal conference expects increased orders caused by war arcadia's attempt at a non campaigning elections system had its second trial at the polls on wednesday although the system of secret nomination accomplished to some degree its purpose of keeping campus political combinations at a minimum pre-election drives and balloting-day conferences of candidates backers show ed their efforts in the ballot ing's outcome the minimum to which this year's election system limited electioneering and combines resulted in election of 5 of the 7 men picked as favorites of a clique of all the fraternity houses having representatives at an election day noon time meeting election day activity last year resulted in the unexpect ed domination of town and dormitory men in the final re sults repitition of last year's electioneering but this time by a fraternity group shows the extent and power to which po litical combinations may be effected under the present sys tem of choosing class officers presidents fight state competition 20 heads ask protection for private colleges six more periods of probation because of measles have been im posed on fraternity houses since the first report of the recent mea sles flurry on the campus lambda chi alpha sigma nu theta delta chi sigma alpha mv and phi sigma kappa have been removed from probation during the past two days this was the second restricted period for phi sigma kappa and sigma alpha mu chi psi began its second per iod of observation thursday morn ing the men stricken were either sent home or to local hospitals and no new case developed while the houses were isolated this brings the total of proba tionary periods up to 11 previously affected houses being theta kappa phi and alpha kappa phi talk on air corps heard by seniors four of lehigh's social fraterni ties are faced with the problem of having to buy their chapter houses or to move to new quarters by june 1 theta xi alpha kappa pi pi lambda phi and kappa sigma are owned at present by the e p wilbur trust fund investment pool formed in 1936 when the e p wilbur trust company went defunct by court order the pool corporation must sell the houses and the fraternities have been no tified to find new homes or to buy the houses presently occupied theta xi has arranged to move the date set tentatively at june 1 according to john v downs bus 41 president of the fraternity alpha kappa pi is incorporat ing to issue bonds to raise money for the purchase of the present house at 514 delaware avenue the bonds selling at 50 to 100 are being sold to parents of mem bers and alumni some funds are expected to come from the na tional chapter making the balance 50 per cent of the money needed the remainder of the money will be raised through a mortgage with the pool there are no houses available in town and the frater nity has no money at present to build on the campus stated john m hood arts 41 president of the house pi lambda phi has decided nothing definite as yet they do not have the necessary funds but hope to build on the campus in the near future according to s law rence hollander ch e 42 presi dent kappa sigma has made no de cision as yet they expect to re main in their present house until they can build on the campus house members stated five hundred delegates from 100 secondary and preparatory schools in pennsylvania and new jersey will attend the eighth annual le high scholastic press conference registration will take place at 9 o'clock tomorrow in packard lab oratory at which time tours of the campus will be conducted for the visitors hudson hawley news editor of the international division of the national broadcasting company will address the opening session at 11 o'clock in packard auditor ium dale gramley professor of journalism and chairman of the conference will introduce the speakers president clement c williams will extend the greetings of the university to the delegates after which wilson l godshall profes sor of diplomatic history and in ternational relations will deliver an address lunch in the armory will follow at 12:30 o'clock to hold discussions roundtable conferences in pack ard laboratory and christmas saucon hall will begin at 2 o'clock general news writing editorial writing headlines and makeup sports writing magazine prob lems business staff problems and financial problems for school publications are the assorted top ics which will be discussed
