university on the economics of rational change to take place on may 1 galbraith is this year's presentation in the berman lecture series on economics at lehigh galbraith is currently professor of economics at harvard — a position he has held since 1949 his government service record is extensive he has written many articles and books on economics and government his stand on economic policy is probably best stated in his book the affluent society in which he maintains that the american economy has reached a point where urgency of production is a myth increased production according galbraith does not satisfy genuine needs but rather gratifies wants that have been manufactured by advertising he said that much more should be spent on public services which are far from affluent galbraith stands tall in stature 6'8 and reputation according to current biography galbraith is looked upon by his colleagues as an unorthodox and challenging thinker with an acute sense of humor william f buckley who regularly at tacks galbraith's ideas in national review said where else except in galbraith can you find one who is at once president of the american economics association past president of the americans for democratic action author of the best known economic treatises since john maynard keynes and principal dispenser of the kind of snake oil they have been drinking here in miami beach buckley was referring to galbraith's stand on the redistribution of wealth he called galbraith the principal intellectual patron of the mcgovern convention accordingly galbraith is staunchly anti-nixon in an article in esquire galbraith wrote on a wide range of matters from supreme court ap pointments to racial equality to the problems of the cities and the poor nixon's instinct seems unerringly for the regressive ordivisive course i intend for whatever effect it may have to oppose him in the future as in the past galbraith is an advocate of price con trols despite his bad experiences with price controls during world war ii when he served as an administrator of the office of price administration opa and the director of price controls oi the ex perience galbraith said i reached the point that all price fixers reach my enemies outnumbered my friends john kenneth galbraith leder says u must change to be solvent and viable a national decrease of interest in engineering business and education among college freshmen could hurt lehigh if the university does not change to suit students new interests and demands according to prof lawrence h leder chairman of the forum trends sub committee leder cited a study in the chronicle of higher education which showed that in terest in these careers has dropped while interest in law and medicine has risen according to the study the number of freshmen interested in business since 1966 has fallen from 11.6 to 10.5 per cent in engineering from 8.9 to 5.3 per cent and in elementary secondary and college teaching from 23.5 to 12.7 per cent leder said that in the future it might be difficult to draw high quality students in these areas because of the smaller number of interested students leder suggested that the size of classes in these disciplines be decreased to maintain a high quality of education the creation of a law school at lehigh would be a wise move in view of the study's figures leder said he said that the law school resolution passed by the forum offers the university the chance to move into a growth area he declared that it would get many more applicants than it could handle and would give lehigh a real area of new strength leder also called the recent formation of the lehigh valley area health education center lvahec ) a good step in meeting increased student interest in medicine he said that lvahec would be tapping an area that is in a growth situation leder claimed that the university must change to remain both solvent and viable he noted that such change would be a long-range pattern and would not mean that faculty would be dismissed however he said it might mean that retiring faculty in certain areas would not be replaced noting that a growing number of fresh men are undecided about their majors and future careers leder said that freshmen have a less predetermined career orientation he said that there is more concern about specific education in areas that might close up in a few years he cited teaching and engineering as areas that have closed up suddenly in the past leder attributed the recent rise in vocational training to the fact that students no longer view a college degree as a passport to a job he said a degree is not a vocational certificate and only indicates that a student has been exposed to a variety of subjects class of 1 974 to hold elections mar the full geinius of its creator wachet auf is among the most popular of bach's well over 200 cantatas it is based on a chorale by 16th century mystic composer philip nicolai the three choral movements
