medical school under the guidance of the lehigh valley area health education center lvahec that would allow students to receive an m.d in six years according to eric ottervik vice-provost and acting coordinator of lvahec ottervik spoke about the proposed program and the purposes of lvahec at a p.p & r committee meeting tuesday in order to receive a medical degree in six years ottervik explained a qualified student would be guaranteed admission to the university and a specified medical school simultaneously he would spend two years in a pre-medical program at the university and would then attend the medical school for two years without having taken some of the more advanced pre-med courses that are duplicated in medical school the university would agree to accept the medical school's courses for credit toward the student's b.s degree the student would then complete his training with two years at a local hospital this program said ottervik would eliminate the repetition between pre-med and medical courses and allow the student to graduate in six years with both a b.s and an m.d degree ottervik said that he and hayden pritchard associate professor of biology b&w photo by h e 1973 senior class gift campaign whereby seniors are asked to contribute 20 for 20 years to lehigh moved into full swing this week the first indications are that it will be the most successful cam paign in years as of mar 6 126 seniors had pledged more than 50,000 to the university more significant was the fact that ap proximately seven out of every ten seniors contacted agreed to pledge this is a much higher percentage than in previous years according to rick laird 73 who is coordinating the fund raising drive the campaign is running smoothly the program is gaining momentum said laird we hope that by the end of next week we will approach our goal of 100 per cent participation from our class the class gift campaign will continue through mar 13 it is hoped that each senior will be contacted personally by then any senior not contacted or having any questions should contact laird at 867 2229 brockway fowler lindgren give law school funding alternatives by jeff bloom in the midst of the pessimism surrounding the chances of state funding for the proposed law school three key men in the forum study of the law school remain optimistic that the financial ob stacles can be overcome in recent interviews brian g brock way dean of the college of business and economics w beall fowler professor of physics and j ralph lindgren associate professor of philosophy claimed that alternative methods are available for raising the needed capital to start a law school other than state aid we don't know what sources are available we won't know until we can say to the public that lehigh is committed to have a law school provided we raise the money brockway said he added that until this is announced lehigh will never know if wealthy alumni or foundations are willing to sponsor a law school he said i don't think that you can expect an alumnus to come forth r xi say he'd like to build one until you tell . ople that you'd like to start one we may find that there are people willing to give to this purpose who ordinarily wouldn't give to the new century fund " brockway said another possibility for the law school he said were foundations provided the university law school was in some way unique yet another alternate way of raising money said brockway former dean of the university of detroit law school is that we could borrow it fowler chairman of the priorities planning and resources committee of the forum concurs with brockway tlje ad ministration would find it more attractive if we could be financed by a lump sum said fowler who agrees that state funding is an attractive way of financing but not the only way an alternative is to borrow the capital to start the school and be self-liquidating within a reasonable period according to fowler this plan calls for a mortgage to be taken out on the new buildings which could be paid within 16 years the core of the library is expected to be donated by retiring lawyers another plan stated by lindgren a member of p p & r and responsible for most of the financial work the committee did on the law school calls for allocation of birch bayh will speak mar 16 at varities of alienation parley indiana senator birch bayh will be the special guest speaker at a conference on varieties of alienation to be sponsored by the university's graduate school of education on mar 16 sen bayh will address the afternoon general session of educators in packard lab auditorium between 1:30 and 2:30 p.m interested members of the university community and students from neighboring colleges are invited to attend bayh is the democratic senator from indiana and chairman of the senate subcommittee to investigate juvenile delinquency he is currently serving his second term in the u.s senate and is widely regarded as one of the senate's outstanding constitutional authorities as chairman of the constitutional amendments subcommittee of the senate judiciary committee bayh wrote and guided to passage the 25th amendment to the constitution which deals with presidential inability and vice presidential succession he also led the successful effort in the senate for passage of the 26th amendment which lowered the voting age to 18 at the outset of the 92nd congress bayh was named chairman of the subcommittee 1 1 investigate juvenile delinquency he immediately undertook a broad review of ihe way young people are treated in the nation's criminal justice system and has proposed legislation for a major revam ping of correctional institutions and the entire national approach to youthful of fenders his subcommittee has also held hearings on the abuse of drugs and the ready availability of the cheap handguns known as saturday night specials the varieties of alienation con ference will focus on the dynamics of alienation sighting education as a field of reference for the study of alienation as a dynamic force the conference which invites educators from across the nation lo attend is being held in conjunction with a meeting of the i-ehigh valley school study council a lehigh university-based cooperative organization of public schools in five neighboring counties lehigh nor thampton berks carbon and monroe its
