deliver commencement address edward e david jr former science advisor to president nixon and director of the office of science and technology will deliver the university commencement address may 27 david was science advisor from 1970 until january 1973 when he became executive vice president and a director of gould inc and a president of gould laboratories as such he is responsible for the company's corporate research development and planning activities lehigh's 105 th commencement ox cercises will begin at 2:30 p.m m a large tent m taylor stadium erected especially for the university's annual alumni reunion and the commencement ceremony which are being held on the same weekend this year for the first time m lehigh history at commencement president w deming lewis will confer some 850 degrees on men and women being graduated from the colleges of arts and science engineering and business and economics and from the graduate school and school of education this includes approximately 600 un dergraduate men and women and 200 men and women graduate students included m this year's graduating class will be the first undergraduate coeds m lehigh's 109-year history the university accepted its first coeds m september 1971 the young women graduating this year are those who transferred to lehigh from other colleges m the past two years the lehigh alumni reunion will open may 25 and continue through may 26 m the tent which has been expanded this year to accomodate 4,500 people for the com mencement exercises traditional ac tivities for the alumni include the reception and citation dinner on may 25 and the family picnic lunch and parade of reunion classes renewed this year after a one-year hiatus on may 26 on the same days commencement will be a special chapel program combining an optional baccalaureate service and the traditional memorial service for deceased alumni rotc commissionong exercises the president's reception and luncheon for honorary degree recipients and their guests and the president's post commencement reception for graduates and their guests university alumni association officials have announced that alumni and their spouses returning for the reunion are being encouraged to remain for com mencement while parents and guests of graduating seniors are being invited to arrive early to take part m the many reunion-related activities a native of wilmington n.c david received the b.s m electrical engineering from georgia institute of technology and the s.m and the sc.d from massachusetts institute of technology he joined bell telephone laboratories m 1950 and subsequently worked m un derwater sound and communication ac dr edward e david jr budget group retracts attack on 10-year plan we are far better off with the ten-year model than without it said gary e whitehouse associate professor of in dustrial engineering m opposition to the budget committee's recent resolution encouraging the administration to look for a viable alternative to the ten-year model budget at the friday meeting whitehouse moved that the committee retract its motion dealing with the ten-year model passed at the last meeting the motion to retract was passed five to four the budget committee's motion in troduced by james diefenderfer associate professor of chemistry asked for a thorough review of the assumptions to be used m any planning model en compassing all sectors of the university community whitehouse s motion stated the following reasons to retract diefenderfer's motion 1 the ten-year model is a managerial planning tool which helps show the administration the effects of alternative courses of action on the cash flow of the university over the next ten years the motion stated that upper administration and trustees are familiar with and have confidence m the ten-year model and destroying it may force decision-making without an eye to the future impact of their decisions b&w poll shows one-third frosh regret decision to come to lehigh by jeff bloom about one out of every three freshman at lehigh this year regret their decision to come to the university according to a brown & white freshman questionnaire the poll was conducted on a door-to-door basis m living groups on the evening of mar 26 besides the question about the student's decision to attend lehigh the survey examined freshman opinion on the university's social life overall impression of lehigh the gryphon society the forum fraternities and integrated dorms more than 44 percent of the class of 1976 was polled by members of the b&w news staff results were compiled by computer with the assistance of graduate students frank w koko and richard greene and charles n brownstein assistant professor of government forty and five-tenths percent of the female freshman polled expressed displeasure about coming to lehigh thirty and seven-tenths percent of the freshman males polled responded the same way overall 31.8 percent aren't pleased that they chose lehigh perhaps one reason for this response can be attributed to the social life ac cording to the questionnaire 53.5 percent of the freshman polled are disenchanted with lehigh's social life a larger per centage of males than females find the social life not to their liking of the males polled 54.9 percent find the social life unfavorable while 42.1 percent of the females said they are disillusioned with it among the comments of males who said they are disenchanted with their social life are not enough girls who want a mutually enjoyable time m bed where are the chicks if you don't drink there is nothing to do i need women for friendship and pleasure there's no communication between males and females the social life is centered too much around fraternities the gym ifc head says hill safer with sayre roads closed sayre park is now a safer place on friday and saturday nights according to icf president bryan dunn the closing of sayre park roads last friday and saturday nights said dunn was suc cessful despite a very taxing weekend at some f rats parents weekend caused a lot more traffic than would normally be expected dunn said on friday he added a party m the m&m parking lot filled the bth street parking lot causing more problems for fraternity parking dunn said that even though last weekend was the worst weekend that could have been picked to initiate the closing all went fairly well dunn said the closing of the roads served three purposes parking he said has always been a problem and by limiting the number of cars to fraternity members one problem was eased considerably another concern was that parking would hinder the passage of emergency vehicles to the hill dunn said theft he added may be cut down because non-fraternity students will have to walk away with stolen goods dunn reported that he knew of only two small disturbances there were two in cidents he said m which students demanded to be let through and were allowed access after they had given their names to the road block officers i imagine they'll report to dean quay later dunn said the road blocks manned by campus police and one security guard caused only short delays according to dunn the police were very efficient he added alan abels 74 is preparing a report to ifc on the results of the sayre park closing he said that he will meet with the committee this week to discuss its
