the arts and science faculty approved a proposal to establish an interim com mittee on academic alternatives to deal responsibly with the individual instances of aggravation caused by the language requirement the arts and science committee who made the proposal is currently con sidering the whole distribution concept they plan to have a proposal for the faculty on the distribution concept some time next year the creation of the interim committee marks a change in the faculty stand said john w hunt dean of the college of arts and sciences the faculty is now saying that there is another way of dealing with the language requirement besides those already specified the interim committee is to be com posed of five faculty members to be ap pointed by hunt he has not yet decided on the composition of the committee he added i won't stack the committee in any direction the different points of view of the faculty will be represented he fairchild gift largest in u history adds 5.25 million to century fund the fairchild foundation inc has made a grant of 5.25 million to the university for a laboratory for solid state studies several faculty chairs graduate fellowships and undergraduate scholar ships in science and fundamental engineering the gift the largest in university history was made toward the university's current 67 million new century fund and honors the late sherman fairchild inventor and industrialist who started the foundation in 1955 the four-story solid state laboratory to be named the sherman fairchild laboratory is scheduled for completion in late 1976 it will consolidate lehigh's interdisciplinary research and educational programs in solid state studies which include disciplines in physics chemistry materials science and electronics paul franz vice president of development said that the grant will be a tremendous boost to the new century campaign about half of the money he said will go into the university's en dowment of investment fund other moneys he added will go into brick and mortar as well as fellowships and faculty chairs franz said that representatives from the foundation visited the university twice before giving the grant fhey seem to think its a pretty good school he added university president w deming lewis commented while lehigh has been in creasingly active in this area of science and technology the additional resources provided by this splendid grant will give great impetus to the diversity and ex cellence of lehigh's programs campus planner h joris rosse said the grant is probably going to speed up implementation of long-range elements of the campus development plan " the grant also establishes two sherman fairchild professorships eight graduate fellowships and 10 undergraduate scholarships to the university the late sherman fairchild was a pioneer in aviation and photography he invented the aerial camera and made major contributions to computer tran sistors rev flesher is elected chairman of forum iv by beth troy the rev hubert flesher was elected chairman of forum iv during the first session of the new forum on tuesday also elected were rich conway 74 as vice chairman nick noel 74 as secretary treasurer janet scagnelli 75 paul maco 74 ralph lindgren associate professor of philosophy and frank colon associate professor of government as forum representatives to the board of trustees the forum also recommitted for further study a resolution stating that the ad missions office should not regard sex as a criterion in determining qualification for admission insofar as possible the resolution was aimed at making the male-female ratio as nearly equal as possible preston parr dean and vice-president for student affairs said that the present policy is evolving in the direction of the motion within the constraints of curricula and housing accommodations he added that the board of trustees sets the guidelines for women's admissions an amendment which would have deleted the words insofar as possible from the resolution was defeated on the grounds that the achievement of an equal male-female ratio might not be possible because of limitations in the residence system ruth hurley assistant dean of student life said that a 50-50 ratio would be desirable but that it is not possible at this stage she said that too few women have been encouraged to enter the fields of business and engineering to which the university has a definite commitment the forum also tabled a motion ex pressing criticism of the lehigh horizons after lengthy discussion it stated that the lehigh community is still in need of a viable communications mechanism charles loehr 73 who introduced the motion said that the lehigh horizons contained factual errors he cited an article about the proposed law school which he said incorrectly implied that the law school would be expected to lose money he also said that the publication didn't address itself to the issues and criticized the overall quality of john kenneth galbraith to deliver berman talk tuesday economist john kenneth galbraith will speak tuesday as the highlight of the university's fourth annual economics week galbraith 1973 philip i berman lec turer in economics will speak on the economics of rational change at 8:30 p.m in grace hall the berman series is offered through the college of business and economics and is coordinated by andrew r wein traub assistant professor of economics who is also coordinating the economics week program which is devoted to the analysis of galbraith's economics this year galbraith the former u s ambassador to india and now professor of economics at harvard university will also be involved in other activities with lehigh faculty and students a reception with galbraith after the address will be held in the faculty lounge of the uc there will also be a discussion of john kenneth galbraith his works and his critics at 8 p.m monday in whitaker lab auditorium members of the panel are myron e sharpe editor and publisher of challenge magazine eli schwartz professor of economics jon t innes assistant professor of economics and ljubisa adamovich visiting professor of economics from the university of belgrade in yugoslavia weintraub will moderate the discussion galbraith former editor of fortune magazine has written numerous books including the affluent society the liberal hour the new industrial state and most recently economics peace and laughter he is also the author of the triumph a novel the mclandress dimension a collection of satirical short stories written under a pseudonym ambassador's journal a personal account of the kennedy years and several shorter works including how to control the military and how to get out of vietnam his technical articles cover agricultural economics price policy economic organization and fiscal policy he is well known in literary circles as an essayist and book critic galbraith has taught agricultural economics and economic development and has served as advisor to the govern ments of india pakistan and ceylon he was a member of adlai stevenson's campaign staff in both 1952 and 1956 he was chairman of the economic advisory committee of the democratic advisory council from 1956 to 1960 and an early supporter of john f kennedy a member of kennedy's 1960 convention staff and later chairman of americans for democratic action he was ambassador to india from 1961 to 1963 and had general charge of american policy during the 1962 border conflict between india and china an opponent of the vietnam war from 1961 galbraith supported eugene mc carthy in 1968 was one of his floor managers at chicago and seconded his nomination each year the berman series established in 1970 brings economists of
