editor of lehigh university news and would have repudiated anything on the basis of the past said george beezer editor of the lehigh horizons regarding the criticism of the horizons in recent forum meetings i'm afraid that some people did not judge it purely on its own merits he added at the apr 25 forum meeting charles loehr 73 said that the horizons con tained f acuta 1 errors he cited an article about the proposed law school which he said incorrectly implied that the law school would be expected to lose money he also said that the publication did not address itself to the issues and criticized the overall quality of the writing during the courtesy of the floor period at the apr 11 forum meeting bob gryc wacz 72 charged that the horizons had failed miserably in providing alumni with information about the university beezer who previously worked for the philadelphia inquirer as editor of tv week and assistant editor of today magazine explained the problems inherent in a college publication that is only printed five times yearly he said that they were unable to use the typical method of update news reporting such as is used by the brown and white because the large figured in the decision to deny her tenure mrs cap who has taught for four years at lehigh first received her terminal contract in may 1972 she taught as an assistant professor for three years before coming to lehigh at dunbarton college in washington d.c and east stroudsburg state college mrs cap said that she was given favorable treatment by the two professors who wrote recommendations at that time she also said that prof john a van eer de who was head of the department of romance languages before the language department merger has always supported her 100 per cent and the comments of prof victor valenzuela with whom she said she has little contact were essen tially favorable mrs cap teaches advanced french fr 14 french oral and written composition fr 42 survey of french literature fr 52 symbolism fr 308 and a group of independent studies students in view of the favorable recom mendations mrs cap said that she questioned anna herz chairman of the department of modern foreign languages and literatures about the decision mrs herz denied any in volvement in the decision mrs cap said i feel that this the tenure decision process was not done properly said mrs cap who has appealed the decision to the university personnel committee in light of the recent merger of the romance and germanic language departments mrs cap asked for a re-evaluation by the joint department five members of the language depart ment submitted comments for the re evaluation this march mrs cap said that van eerde and associate professor arthur gardner who shares an office with her both endorsed her strongly however the comments of mrs herz valenzuela and prof john übben who no longer teaches in the department were not made available to mrs cap despite her requests to get them from the university personnel committee the office of the dean of the college of arts and sciences and the president's office those two who really know me best in the department support me mrs cap declared referring to gardner and van eerde of mrs herz and valenzuela she aid director says it's inconsistent for needy students to keep cars editor's note this is the first of two articles dealing with abuses of university financial aid services it is very inconsistent for a student who says he needs financial aid in order to continue at the university to keep a car an expensive stereo or some other trapping of affluence according to william e stanford financial aid director what i try to impress upon the aid recipient . . is that other than commuters married students and those accepting the 300 voluntary deduction for maintaining a motor vehicle recipients should not be maintaining cars — and keeping them covertly off campus stanford said stanford said that there is some evidence of recipients abusing financial aid services but that hopefully they are in the minority he said the frustration of this position is that you get little tidbits of information from students but nobody is sufficiently upset to pass a name on stanford cited the example of a student who said i know at least a dozen students on financial aid who have cars and ex pensive stereos but there is little way to check if the claims are fact or fiction he said most of the students who make such allusions are those who have been denied aid stanford said they have a type of righteous indignation stanford added that allegations through the said office are not necessarily about those recipients who have small need and award he said that there are also allusions about students receiving federal funds for being actual borderline poverty cases who are maintaining cars stanford said that in his six years at the university there was only one case in which a name was dropped it's a moral problem and affects morale he said stanford added however that violators have been caught in the past he said that he has never taken away the student's full award although the aid office is em powered to do so maybe that's the problem he said if we'd done that a few times maybe there wouldn't be a problem stanford said that on several occasions he's read articles in the bethlehem globe times which have led him to parr in one of several interviews with administrative deans on the b&w fresh men poll taken on mar 26 parr dean of student affairs stated that the various deans staffs are genuinely concerned and want to help improve student life but any efforts have to be made by both students and staff he said that the deans are interested in what they can learn from the poll to make for a better life at the university arthur mann associate dean of students stated that the university is working toward improving the social life for students but that the dissatisfaction expressed is a normal phenomenon there has never been a year that the freshmen haven't expressed dissatisfaction mann said mann said his own experience has shown that people go to college with definite expectations and find that college really isn't what they expected students come to the realization that an awful lot has to be worked at without minute to minute in spiration he said when talking to students mann said he has found that the unhappy ones haven't gone to a single lecture or concert the more participation you have outside the classroom the more likely you are to have a human being he stated mann said that living with people of different values forces freshmen to examine themselves in a way they have never done before it is a painful ex perience and a certain degree of unhappiness is normal which may be desirable because they learn to cope with it and build from it stated mann next fall mann said he hopes to get a number of weekend camps for new fresh men underway to put them together in a living
