lehigh university brown and white vol 81 - no 5 bethlehem pa tuesday september 30 1949 846-0331 cancellation asked for classes on 15th by 8 p.m last eight more than 1000 students had signed a petition calling on the administration bxpance classes on oct 15 in conjunction with a day long moratorium against the vietnam war the 1000 signatures were collected mostly in the university center area especially in the cafeteria downstairs during dinner also students from participating organiza tions visited fraternities later in the night in an attempt to get more signatures today a campaign started to circulate petitions in classes so that those students not yet contacted have a chance to voice their support of the moratorium tomorrow arcadia is expected to voice their support of the petition efforts to implement the moratorium however will have to be directed mostly toward the faculty since it is they and not the administration who have the power to cancel classes yesterday's kick-off campaign for gathering signatures followed the second organiza tional meeting of the vietnam moratorium committee which about fifty students attended mike golden chairman of the lehigh vietnam moratorium committee addressed the gathering members of participating organizations such as student mobilization committee and the social relations club in addition to other students attended the chairmen for the following committees were named after yesterday's meeting mark friedman president of the gryphon society is in charge of working out an agenda for the morning of oct 15 don parsons president of arcadia has respon sibility for co-ordinating events with area schools jim reilly and peter tinker graduate assistant in english are in charge of publicity and the afternoon agenda ron kaplan and mike kimrr.cl head of smc have responsibility for forming the evening agenda at the moment it appears that the schedule for oct 15 will resemble the following in the morning there will be a teach-in on campus around noon a memorial service for lehigh valley servicemen killed in vietnam will take place during the afternoon a coalition rally with area colleges is planned finally a night rally would take place possibly in bethlehem city center to unite students and townspeople in opposition to the war the committee on performing arts will open its 1969*70 season with a performance of the off-broadway production of tom paine 8:15 to night in grace hall the play written by paul foster has won internat ional acclaim university i.d card holders will be admitted free guest tickets are 1.00 13 in m-m refuse to pay social dues could fate expulsion from dormitory thirteen students living in mcclintic-marshall hall including those black students living together in b-2 section are refusing to pay the required 9 social fee this semester payment of the dues allows the student to attend the five band parties the house mixer and cocktail parties sponsored by mcclintic-marshall residence halls regulations require the payment of such fees under penalty of receiving residence halls demerits at the rate of one per day after the deadline date three demerits subjects the student to review by the residence halls discipline committee and five demerits allows the com mittee to recommend that the student be expelled from the dorm at a meeting of the section presidents held last tuesday jack barnaba m-m president and clarence campbell dean of residence the section presidents voted unanimously to enforce the above regulation they also extended the deadline date to friday sept 26 as of sunday evening those students who had not yet paid still had no intention of doing so a few are social members of fraternities and are attending parties at their respective houses but the majority of the holdouts are comprised of black students living in b-2 section charles terry spokesman for the blacks said the issue was irrelevant we don't want to attend any of the planned beer-orgies and have no intention of doing so none of the events being planned really apply to us barnaba reported that several blacks were present at both of the parties held by the dorm already however terry domed this saying " they must have been town students nobody from our section was there according to parr the problem is not new every year sev eral students refuse to pay their dues are assessed demerits and appeal their case to the rhc disciplinary committee i no one however he added has ever been suspended from the residence hall be i cause of non-payment col gates b stern arcadia abolishes freshman cabinet three members of arcadia met to determine the fate of the controversial freshmen cabinet late last week in light of the fact that the cabinet had accomplished little in past years it was abolished however section officers will be elected to serve only in resolving intrasection dilemmas this present action by arcadia is a result of forces built up over previous years which finally came to a climax this year according to richard plant head of arcadia freshman life committee the freshmen cabinet did not have enough to do and when it did have something to do didn't know where to go and who to see in order to resolve the condition or problem it was concerned with as a result the typical lehigh apathy set in and many freshmen section presidents never showed up for the meeting also some problems which concerned them such as coeducation they couldn't really do anything about under the new guidelines freshmen will elect house presidents who will be represen tative members on the arcadia administrative council if any student or group of students voices a problem or suggestion to the bouse president that president can 1 hold a meeting for all interested residents of the dorm 2 speak to other house presidents and hold a meeting for all interested freshmen 3 take the problem or suggestion to arcadia and/or the freshmen life adviser or 4 use any combination of the above 1 1 should be noted however that freshmen social chairmen will meet regularly with the freshmen social life committee to discuss possibilities in that area it la hoped that this new system will be more effective than the late freshmen cabinet and in the process will be more efficient by holding meetings only when necessary and by using direct channels in resolving problems stern receives legion of merit cadets honored a combination retirement ceremony and cadet's award review was held last night in grace hall at the formal cere mony the legion of merit was presented to col gates b stern former commandant of the lehigh rotc unit the award second highest medal that can be conferred by the president of the united states is given for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding service it was presented to stern by university president w doming lewis along with the presentation lehigh rotc cadets received awards for out standing performance and distinguished military students wore honored the awards were presented by stern as his last official duty many academic deans and administra tive heads attended and sat in the reviewing stands military music was provided by the lehigh marching band under prof jonathan elkus col stern was born in uniontown pa and graduated from lehigh in 1036 he waa a member of phi beta kappa and received special honors in business administration he served in algeria and france in world war n and in korea in 1951-52 before coming to lehigh in 1965 stern was stationed at fort eustls va whore he waa chief of the combined arms and staff divisions and later director of the academics training departmet at the transportation school | concert tickets town students may sign
