radio the burden does not rest on a col lege to attempt to accommodate all speakers who might wish to reach a student audience hence the question comes down to a mat ter of limitation and choice generally recognized scholars in the arts and sciences may al ways be welcomed if interest war rants and their coming can be ac commodated the lehigh presi pi delta epsilon national honorary able number of prospective stu dents from college because tuition is free and an impression has spread that such training would lead to assured employment in some areas especially in western pennsylvania the advertising for this training was vigorous the number of students hav ing taken the training in the uni ted states is reported by the office of education as of february 1 1941 to be about 422,500 or about four times the number of engin eering students regularly enrolled in college i addition the n y a and c c c organizations are setting up programs of training furthermore the vocational high schools are engaged under a large federal appropriation in training even larger numbers in manual arts a considerable number of these who might normally have gone to college will enter industry applications at lehigh for ad mission next september exceed those of last year by about five per cent which would indicate about a normal freshman class since most freshmen are below draft age of the present law what the drop in the upper classes will be cannot be predicted with con selective military service and the attractions of industrial em ployment are two factors which president c c williams sees as affecting college enrollments in the immediate future he told the uni versity board of trustees at the annual spring meeting saturday the loss in enrollments thus he said would come in the upper classes of colleges freshman en rollments are not likely to be dis turbed the president said that lehigh will probably admit a freshman class of about 530 men next fall total enrollment may be down about 24 students in commenting on the factors affecting college enrollments pres ident williams said in some quarters there is a dis position to recognize the import ance of trained scientists in the reconstruction and economic com petition of the world after the war will have closed and on this re cognition to defer military service for students in engineering chem istry little diffi culty of decision at the extremes dr williams declared a recog nized scholar who is not an emo tional advocate of any ism would always be welcome while on the other hand one who himself parade of speakers and bearers of messages president c c williams told the board of trustees of the university satur day in a statement accompanying his budget message this is so he said because the number which might come to a campus would be so great as to interfere with normal educational procedures following are excerpts from the president's message the faculty who are chosen for their scholarship character and effectiveness in teaching and who in general are quite as well pre pared to discuss issues of the day as are visiting lecturers dr will iams said can elicit discrimina tion and judgement which listen ing to promiscuous itinerant ora tory does not yield moreover with newspapers and magazines ranging from extreme to extreme and with a wide cov erage of comment over the radio the burden does not rest on a col lege to attempt to accommodate all speakers who might wish to reach a student audience hence the question comes down to a mat ter of limitation and choice generally recognized scholars in the arts and sciences may al ways be welcomed if interest war rants and their coming can be ac commodated the lehigh presi pi delta epsilon national honorary journalism fraternity will present a program of four moving pictures at 7:30 p m tomorrow in packard labora tory all students may attend free of charge the four pictures are shorts entitled tobaccoland u s a fred waring football thrills of 1940 and matmen the picture made of lehigh wresters the office of education at wash ington and on funds furnished by congress may divert a consider able number of prospective stu dents from college because tuition is free and an impression has spread that such training would lead to assured employment in some areas especially in western pennsylvania the advertising for this training was vigorous the number of students hav ing taken the training in the uni ted states is reported by the office of education as of february 1 1941 to be about 422,500 or about four times the number of engin eering students regularly enrolled in college i addition the n y a and c c c organizations are setting up programs of training furthermore the vocational high schools are engaged under a large federal appropriation in training even larger numbers in manual arts a considerable number of these who might normally have gone to college will enter industry applications at lehigh for ad mission next september exceed those of last year by about five per cent which would indicate about a normal freshman class since most freshmen are below draft age of the present law what the drop in the upper classes will be cannot be predicted with con selective military service and the attractions of industrial em ployment are two factors which president c c williams sees as affecting college enrollments in the immediate future he told the uni versity board of trustees at the annual spring meeting saturday the loss in enrollments thus he said would come in the upper classes of colleges freshman en rollments are not likely to be dis turbed the president said that lehigh will probably admit a freshman class of about 530 men next fall total enrollment may be down about 24 students in commenting on the factors affecting college enrollments pres ident williams said in some quarters there is a dis position to recognize the import ance of trained scientists in the reconstruction and economic com petition of the world after the war will have closed and on this re cognition to defer military service for students in engineering chem istry and physics and perhaps in preparatory medical courses if the administration of the selective service act should proceed along this line a large proportion of le high students would not be dis turbed
