lehigh university brown and white b*6-033 vol 81 - no 6 bethlehem pa friday october 3 1969 joynt explains coed report by george j bancroft and john seitz the subcommittee on coeducation recommended at a press conference this morning that the university admit undergraduate women in the fall of 1971 la a prepared press release it summer sod the conclusions arrived at after eight months of study the report stated that the preferred model is admission of 200 females per year with no redaction in the male enrollment results of questionnaires showed a favorable res posse ranging from 51 for lu alumni to 97 for ugh school honor students eighty four per cent of university students favored coeducation and 75 per cent of the faculty expressed a favorable opinion in addition the report contains cost studies which according to dr carey joynt chairman of the committee should be carefully reviewed la the future he added that further serious study might change these figures markedly he said that the cost studies would probably be conducted by the administration jcul and the board of trus tees a primary concern of the study was the effect that coeducation would have on arcadia backs moratorium allocates 100 by cliff deitch arcadia voted approval wednesday of the vietnam moratorium by calling for indi vidual student choice in observance the statement passed by the student govern ment expresses support of the vietnam moratorium movement requests that the faculty not schedule hour quizes on the day of october 15 asks that the faculty respect the choice of the individual stu dent to observe or not to observe mor atorium activities and allocates 100 to the lehigh vietnam moratorium com mittee the original proposal presented by arcadia president don parsons called for the faculty to cancel all classes on octo ber 15 subsequent discussion and par sons amendment to his own motion re sulted in the final statement debate on the issue centered on ar cadia's responsibility to the lehigh student body as a whole a majority of the solons agreed that arcadia could not dictate demands on the basis of any parti cular student interest in addition the logistics of actual facul ty action before the moratorium date were considered while petitions signed to date by some 1600 students are addressed to university president lewis the faculty body is empowered to suspend classes a full faculty meeting is not scheduled until after october 15 in other business arcadia xxm approv ed its budget statement the budget of fered by treasurer doug griffes 70 totals 2,737.57 in his report to arcadia parsons re vealed that the supply bureau generated a total profit of 50,000 last year this money is plowed back into the overall uni versity budget he called for an evaluation of the matter engineers packers or time for a change in 1948 a contest was held to decide a nick-tame for the university's athletic that would be used instead of or in preference to the name engineers asa result of the content the name packers was chosen however ttie contest was held late in may and somehow the enthusiasm for packers had worn off by the beginning of the neat year instead of being used in preference to or instead of engineers the name packers fell into oblivion last year ttie name was revived by the brown and white again it did not catch on but at the urging of arcadia and the brown and white the nickname committee was termed to review the official name far the athletic teams the committee has d ecus sad the idea of a new nickname with persons both on and off campus including area sports editors on the basis of these discussions the committee decided at its first meeting to solicit name suggestions from students faculty administration and alumni later in the semester a vote will be taken to decide which of the five or six most frequent suggestions will become lehigh s new team name a ballot boa has been placed at the student activities desk and tha committee urges anyone in the lehigh community with an idea for a new nickname to leave his suggestions there the name engineers will automatically appear on the final ballot form so there is no need to submit it as its second season begins in grace hall sun day at 8:15 p.m admission is free and the public is invited fresh from a successful european tour and last season's new york run the com pany including several of the original cast members is making its first ameri can tour time magazine has called the play supple in motion stole in grief satiric in temper the all-negro cast turns it into a mimetic dance of pain fury death and anticipatory joy written by peter weiss author of " marat sade and the investigation song of the lusitanian bogey is a " jour ney through the theatre of anger and pro test it presents a series of dramatized incidents from the recent history of colonial portuguese angola in a cantata like form with passages spoken by indi viduals and in chorus dramatic interludes sound effects a great many songs and strong interjections of straightforward information underlined by a jazz score according to clive barnes of the new york time the play is passionately committed interesting and moving it is not a pretty song but even if you try to block up your ears its pervasive agony will corrode your heart it acquires a re markable power because of its relevance to the negro ghettos in the united states members of the negro ensemble as they appear in song of the lusitanian bogey a play about the colonixation of portugese angola one-day arts festival ready for tomorrow the one-day arts festival which planned by arcadia's freshman social life com mittee is scheduled to begin tomorrow at 1:00 p.m the event will feature underground mo vies in whitaker lab at 3:00 and 7:00 poetry readings in the coffee house a paint-in near the flagpole and musical entertainment busloads of girls freshman and upper class alike wiu arrive from moore col lege of art rose me nt bryn mawr douglas cedar crest and centenary the festival will continue until everyone leaves the last two girls busses schedu led to depart at midnight the musical portion of the event will be held on a stage near the flagpole as close as possible to the university cen ter popular folk singer leonda who has released an album for epic records and plans to release another shortly will begin singing at 1:00 p.m and per form for about 45 minutes she will then meet with amateur folk singers in the coffee house the university will supply boards,eas els and paint for the paint-in partici pants need only bring brushes the one thing needed by the planners of the festival is people amateur folk sing ers rock bands poetry readers and people to help run the festival are needed musician
