lehigh university brown and white vol 81 - mo 9 bethlehem pa tuesoay october 14 1969 866-0331 moratorium a ctivities two valley wide events are planned by ths lehigh valley mo ratorium committee a total of 850 students will par ticipate in the community action program from 1 to 5 ln ths after noon students will circulate in local shopping centers and other areas of community activity the program is designed to promote citizen awareness interest and support for ths moratorium in particular and ths anti-war movement in general leaflets and invitations to the evening rally will be distributed the student-community rally will be held in muhlenberg's memorial hall at 8 p.m the main speakers at this rally will be peter cohen director of the nsw democratic coalition and curtis b gans former director of operations for tho 1968 presiden tial campaign of eugene mccar thy ths following is a listing of vietnam moratorium activities scheduled at participating le hlch valley colleges lehigh university 10 a.m - teach in at ths flag pole introductory remarks by mike golden comments by dr william hermann of whorton school of business university of pennsylvania and david amnion instructor in history cedar crest college all classes canceled 9:30 a.m - shirley chisolm black congresswoman to speak in alumnae hall 10:30 a.m seminar and group discussions with faculty stu dents and civic leaders 18:45 a.m - gathering in tho quad for meditation folksinger and speakers muhlenberg college tuesday 8 p.m - teach in at the garden room wed 10 a.m - discussion of moratorium at regular chapel service ln memorial hall john oliver nelson will speak 7:15 p.m - memorial service ln chapel honoring lehigh valley dead moravian college 10 a.m to 4 p.m - outdoor lectures with faculiy and stu dents shafer speaks to graduates on youth action — by don lodge the governor of pennsylvania a noted scientist and a prominent investment banker and university trustee received hoivary degrees during founder's day ceremonies in grace hall last sunday the hon raymond p shafer governor see text ef speech page 7 of pennsylvania and allen c dußois lehigh alumnus and trustee and partner in the new york investment firm of wertheim & co each received honorary doctor of laws degress dr barry commoner director of the center for the biology of natural systems washington university received an honorary doctor of science degree university president w doming lewis also conferred bachelor's master's and doctorate degrees on 251 persons who completed degree requirements during the summer shafer s address was directed to youth as he pointed out ths young generation's baw photo by camana the university mace is borne by or everett pitcher chairman of the mathe matics department at founder's day ceremonies last sunday pennsylvania gov raymond shafer and university president w deming lewis follow behind pitcher trustees respond favorably to buck hill falls suggestions by dee mcallister university board of trustees members joined administration students and faculty for the first time at the annual buck hill falls conference late last week the eight participating students members of jcul and tho educational policy committee had and opportunity to talk to board members about curricular changes and other subjects arcadia president don parsons said that the trustees res ponded favorably to student suggestions and that the con ference was a " good step for trustees learning first hand student opinions on other more pressing issues such as reaction to black student demands and selectivity in living units wallace richardson professor of industrial engineering and chairman ef ed pol informed tho trustees to his committee's agenda for this year in order of consideration ed pol will take up the following restriction of enrollment in certain upper level courses special courses in black culture voting rights for student mem bers of ed pol freshman year task force goals committee re commendations rotc all-day leadership lab evaluation of inter-lehigh valley college summer session ed pol will take up all of these issues in addition to their regular work load also dr albert zettlemoyer vice-president for research addressed the gathering on different innovations that the univer sity is considering discussing short-range innovations zettle moyer mentioned black studies quotas on the number of students able to take certain seminars and new centers such as a possible center of democratic processes which would encom pass government history and social relations disciplines concerning possible long-range plans zettlemoyer dis cussed new degree programs offered by present departments classes held in living units and graduate students observing for a yoar before they are allowed to teach board of trustees ok's construction of residence halls the now 2.6 million residence halls complex of six individual living units ln three three-story buildings was finally passed by the board of trus tees at their oct 9 meeting the construction of the buildings which have been under consideration for four years will be gin later this month although the complex had been tentatively okayed last semester an unexpected 555,000 increase in construction costs forced a last minute re-evaluation of the project the cost of construction will be financed in part by a 1,265,000 loan from the u s depart ment of housing and urban development hud the self-amortizing loan will be paid back at three por cent a year for the next 50 years the new complex which will house 288 students will be constructed oa the east eod of taylor field northeast of the existing centennial houses com plex each of ths six self-contained living units will house 48 students the first floor of the modern brick structures will contain libraries lounges and recreational areas the two upper floors of each unit will be devoted to study rooms and sleeping quarters architects rendering of the proposed 2.6 million six-dorm residence balls construction will begin this month see schafer page 1 1 see residence halls page 5
