lehigh university brown and white 066.0331 vol 81 - no 10 bethlehem pa friday october 17 1969 thousands join in moratorium teach-in starts day's activities by bill chastain the history of anti communism m the united states and the immorality of american involvement in vietnam were the topics of talks by prof david amidon and dr edward s hermann at the vietnam moratorium teach-in wednesday morn ng amidon an instructor at the university of pennsylvania's wharton school of business spoke to a crowd of about 400 persons positioned around the flagpole introductory remarks were made by mike golden chairman of the lehigh university moratorium committee amidon termed american involvement m vietnam a collective accident of leadership and discussed the origins of the heedlessly vicious anti-communism which made that involvement possible • according to amidon president franklin roosevelt's extreme repudiation of the establishment upon taking office and the communist takeover of china fostered a strong anti-communist senti ment m this country also many american catholics of european descent suffered an identity crisis m the 1930*8 and 1940*a and embraced anti communism to become more american than the americans anti communism tn the united states valley students unite at rally by cuff deitch an estimated 4,500 people demonstra ted strong approval wednesday evening as three major speakers presented cases against the war m vietnam at a rally m muhlenberg a memorial hall the rally coordinated by the lehigh valley committee to end the war represented the culmination of mora torium day activities m the area the assembly was addressed by peter cohan executive director of the pennsylvania new democratic coalition seymour m harsh former press secretary to sen eugene mccarthy and curtis b gans director of operations for mccarthy's 1968 presidential campaign a number of allentown college students began the rally by carrying a casket draped with an american flag and symbolic of the war dead occasional chants and numerous bursts of applause marked the rally don parsons representing the joint college steering committee termed the effort an experience for peace parti cipating institutions included lehigh cedar crest lafayette muhlenberg moravian northampton community and allentown college addressing the audience of pre dominantly college and high school students symbolic casket into muhlenberg memorial hall at wednesday night's moratorium rally phil lacio wins ugly crown as money hits new low by tom foley ugliest man on campus is not a title which you might expect to be actively sought after but this past week turned up an exceptionally large number of candi dates some 17 uglies congregated on the library steps to solicit votes m the form of donations for the campus chest this year the distinction went to lambda chi alpha's entrant phil lacio whose 01.75 waa more than a third of the 245 total in terms of past performances this is the poorest showing the campaign has ever had not only was the total less than a quarter of last year's but it also failed to equal the amount garnered by last year's winning contestant the reasons for the decline are those same ones which constantly haunt this campus it seems that people were just generally appathetic this year com mented larry wehr president of alpha phi omega which sponsors the contest " people ware not interested m working was richard ely's explaination indeed not as many were involved m the contest as compared to previous years the 17 representatives from the various living groups were less than half the number that particiapted last these results will probably affect the contest's future stated ely he went on to say that even if the ccr.tsst was con sidered next year it might be difficult to get priorities for the houseparty football game based on this year's performance m-m a-2*s crazy ron took the second position behind lambda chl's entry the rest of the field was pretty wall bunched down the una the freshman dorms while not taking any of the top spots as far as collecting is concerned capture the num ber race by entering nine of the 17 contestants the university's erstwhile students out did themselves m concocting names such notables as tyronne e horni scrum bar horsey dorney and ousxan gibllta maoa appearances for an activity that has done a m medicine will be featured speakers the dedication of the college's new biology building at 11 a.m saturday will close out the activities in his address at 8:30 p.m friday m colton chapel sen scott will discuss the role of the federal government m water pollution control dr hartline a 1923 graduate of lafayette and presently a biophysicist at rockefeller university will speak at the dedication ceremonies saturday he won the nobel prize for his research on the optic nerve in addition to the talks by scott and hartline wo panel discussions are sche duled for friday the first at 10 a*m m the biology building will be on " environmental control - the municipality and the state the morning panel will feature dr charles f wurster a leading figure m the fight against the use of the insecticide ddt other panelists are mrs jeanette reib man state senator from pennsylvania's 18th district and dr paul a pfretz schnar head of the department of government and law at lafayette " environmental
