asking that individual residence hall sections be allowed to house women guests for houseparty such action would go against traditional university policy wmch has housed all men or all woman in a dormitory arcadia a motion would allow individual sections in the same building to make the decision on wmch sex to bouse while not encouraging disobedience of university social regulations the motion drawn up by norm monhait vice-president declared that arcadia would not participate in their enforcement during houseparty the arcadia social codea committee has usually been responsible for this duty arcadia also approved a second motion calling on the student life committee to approve individual social autonomy as soon as possible and asked tor an immediate joint meeting between the two groups to discuss the issue it is necessary for student life a student-ad m^nistratlon-faculty committee to approve any change in university social regulations the entire problem of social codes in general and the housing of houseparty dates in particular has come into question by the refusal of some freshman sections in drinker and richards to move out so houseparty dates can be housed the university's formal position so far has been that all the sections of a dormitory must move out before girls can be housed there main sections of the first motion read arcadia holds no sympathy with the current university social codes regarding hour limitations on visiting privileges of women guests in student residences and will not participate in their enforcement nonetheless the rules exist and although in conscience we cannot agree with them our constitution binds us to them . the university policy of refusing per mission to individual sections to house women guests for houseparty and the student life committee's inaction on revision of the social codas exacerbates the problem some arcadians maintained that the motion did not go far enough and urged the group to declare university social regulations void and support students in violating them however a broad majority opposed this method and wanted to declare only â– their refusal to enforce the old regula i tlons and work i liberalized social regulations through i orderly channels in other arcadia passed a i motion campus policemen not carry i sidearms when in performance lof special duties as i transfer baw photo by problem of where to house their dates for houseparty weekend in previous years there have been no difficulties because the freshman have compiled with university policy which dictates that one of the frosh dorms will be cleared for the weekend to house dates this year however certain groups in the class refused to play the game of evacuating their rooms and a spirit of confrontation on the issue reached its peak last right at a special rhc meeting called last night to resolve the issue it was finally agreed mat the students in richards would be allowed to remain in the derm until 1 a.m with their dates this compromise was agreed to by richards iv the section wmch had refused to move out for the weekend the meeting was a stalemate until one freshman pointed out that the main objection to moving out was that the students in richards would not have access to their rooms rhc president bob stlmen asked assistant dean of student life william quay if this could be changed without violating houseparty rules what you're proposing is completely accep table quay said the problem began a few weeks ago when it became evident that not one of the freshman dorms was completely in favor of moving out several polls taken over the last week confirmed this position and richards iv was the most adamant in its refusal to move stephen horsfall a spokesman for that section said we're not trying to screw up the rest of the freshmen we just feel that we shouldn't have to go to a hotel for a room those two nights clearing out drinker had been an alter native plan but two sections of that dorm supported the stand taken by richards iv and also refused to move many freshmen felt that the housing problem could be solved by each section individually but this solution would have violated houseparty regulations at its wednesday meeting arcadia voted not to aceenr responsibility for enforcing the rule but in a special meeting last night the gryphon society decided that it would enforce it mike barney rhc vice-president said that the compromise made at last night's meeting was " not a cop-out fortune society nits prison ills by john uhland ex-convicts aad parolees spoke at the university tuesday right oo the ills of our nation's institutions sponsored by the forum for visiting lectures the program was artonded by about 50 people speak ing was the two-year-old fortune society a group of ex convicts who try to cure the ills they know so well the program started with a brief in troduction from fortune's executive see awiv photo by dbason ex-convicts aad parolees of lee fortune society as they appeared at the uni vers i ty tuesday evening the society presented a lecture sponsored ay university forum for visiting lectures on the evils of the united stale's penal system williams debate prize captured by freshmen john uhland 73 and james herron 73 were declared winners of the annual williams debate tournament after the final round thursday evening they will each receive 100 in prize money the second place team of glover hausman 72 and andrew reish 70 will each receive 50 the tournament is one of a series of contests in english composition and public speaking established by prof edward h williams jr an alumnus of the class of 1875 prizes are also offered in composi tion and extempore speaking contests wmch are held during the year this year's topic which was debated during the week by five competing teams was as follows barnes vs delmont insurance co on may 8 1948 albert barnes age 88 purchased a life insurance policy from the delmont life insurance company the policy provided that if the assured shall die by reason of intemperance or intoxica tion from the use of intoxicating liquors or as a result of the violation of any law the company shall not be liable under the policy on february 5 1949 barnes and his wife gladys were playing bridge at the home of walter and jean griscom in the course of the evening mrs griscom told barnes he had reneged barnes denied it and mrs griscom repeated the charge thereupon barnes who had been drinking shouted that he didn't like to be called a cheat and reached across the table and struck mrs griscom in the face griscom yanked barnes to ms feet held mm by the lapels of ms coat and stated i ought to kill you for that barnes broke loose turned and struck mrs griscom again whereupon griscom seized a poker from the fireplace aad mt barnes on the bead with such force that he suffered a fractured skull and died gladys barnes sues the insurance company for the proceeds of
