lehigh university brown and white vol 81 - mo 14 bethlehem pa f mdayrbctober 31 1965 w6_033l arcadia defeats constitutional amendment by dee mcallister arcadia soundly defeated a proposed amendment designed to remove its present constitutional obligation to honor univer sity regulations jerry potack 72 sponsored the proposed amendment ln response to arcadia's social autonomy motion of last week which while not encouraging diso bedience of university social regulations asserted that arc adi a would not participate ln their enforcement duiing houseparty potack and a few other arcadians maintained at the timo that tho motion did not go tor enough and urged the group to encourage students to disobey the social regulations with arcadia's support however other arcadians pointed out that such action would violate article six of the group's constitution which states " this constitution shall take precedence over any other instrument governing the student body of lehigh university subject only to the regulations of lehigh univer sity richard plant 72 proposed that the article be amended to read arcadia shall have all those powers ln general which its function as the supreme executive authority of the student body of lehigh university requires an amendment to arcadia's constitution needs the support of two-thirds of the entire group to place lt before the student body for its approval in a referendum potack urged the solons to vote for the amendment whether or not they favored lt so that the student body could decide for itself on the issue generally he said that passage of the amendment would allow arcadia more leeway in dealing with such major issues as social codes vice-president norm monhait replied that the proposed amendment was useless since in actual fact students and arcadia would still have to obey university regula tions monhait added that article six does not prevent arcadia from criticising university policies plant supported potack s amendment and said that lt is time for arcadia to become more relevant to and get more done for the student body according to him the amendment would enable arcadia to implement this end biu kuhn 70 maintained that arcadia had already accomplished much in co-operation with the administration and faculty and tint the amendment might preclude working in this orderly effective fashion in the future arcadia finally overwhelmingly defeated the proposed amendment with ten solons in opposition three abstentions and only two favoring the proposal in other business steve malkenson 71 reported on preliminary findings of his committee's investigation into the univer sity bookstore he said that although the bookstore appeared to have made 53,000 profit last year it really sustained 17,000 in losses when hidden costs are taken into account sly and tha family stone along with tho stony brook people will ba featured tomorrow night in tho fall ' houseparty arcadia concert in grace hall at 7:45 p.m tickets are 55.50 - 4.50 with an activities card tha popular rhythm and blues gospel and psychedelic sounds of sly and the lyrical qualities of the stony brook people should be just the right combination to please the most demanding audience detroit symphony entrances capacity grace hall crowd by jim sffipkowski the detroit symphony orchestra certainly lived up to its reputation of being one of the top symphony orchestras in the country with a great performance in grace hall tuesday night sixten ehrling the conductor entered amid an enthusiastic acclamation by those present with the gentleness of a man leading a puppy ehrling inspired the symphony to very forceful and pointed interpretations of the selections richard wagner's overture and bac cha nale from the opera tann hauser was the first and perhaps tie mood-setting piece as the violinists began their simultaneous " military like movements the audience shifted from mild intenst to c apt i vat ion the conductor himself emitted an aura of relaxed confi dence characterized best by the springing motion of his body studying stirling's movements was almost like watching a ballet dancer yet ftom this hypnotic machine flowed the epitome of sound filling every nook in the gym at the end of tbe piece those present wen at a loss to describe what they had just heard it was simply magnificent ehrling is amazing the orchestra is fantastic mozart was then represented by his symphony no 35 in d major k 385 haffher though performed well this selection lacked the indefinable something present in wagner's composition the meditation and dance from the ballet " medea by samuel barber followed a brief intermission the piece was very expressive in a rather subtle way the suite from the ballet the fire bird by igor stravinsky was the last selection on the program its introduction rivaled wagner's piece in audience approval the nature of the entire selection made it a perfect finale to a superb concert after reappearing numerous times con ductor ehrling yielded to an admixing audience with an encore the third movement of the classical symphony by serge prokofieff the applause that followed will be remembered by grace hail to its dying day many things contributed to the success of the concert fint on the list was the excellent attitude of the members of the orchestra ehrling cannot be praised too highly he was tremendous all his movements seem to play an impor tant part in the sound of the symphony grace hall itself behaved rather well its fans disturbing only a short part of the second selection another significant factor was the excellent turnout both students and adults from lehigh and the lehigh valley wen well represented they had come to hear a living cultural body of sound they were not disappointed trustee dinner honors asa packer society we should be proud of a future in which we will continue to be preeminently strong in science and engineering said university president dr w deming lewis last night in new york lewis was one of five speakers on the program at a dinner at the plaza hotel honoring the university's asa packer society on the second anniversary of its founding by the lehigh board of trustees we should recognize lewis contin ued " that a further growth of excellence and strength in the arts and business would be highly desirable and should be achievable to tho mutual benefit of all concerned including our future engineers and scientists referring to the university's founder lewis said he created a tremendously important new und of institution one that could train men to create a stronger and richer america lehigh must grow naturally out of this imaginative and the detroit symphony orchestra as it appeared bafore a sellout crowd in grace hall tuesday evening under the direction of sixten ehrling me orchestra performed selections by wagner mozart barber and stravinsky see trustee page 8
