lehigh university brown and white mmmmmm&mmm vol 81 - no 16 bethlehem pa tuesday november 11 1969 mo-0331 goldstein sclar to do apollo work dr joseph i goldstein assistant professor of metallurgy and materials science at lemgh has been selected to perform scientific studies of particles taken from the surface of the moon by american astronauts during the upcoming apollo xii mission dr goldstein is the second scientist et lehigh to be named by the national aeronautics and space administration nasa as a principal investigator for its returned lunar sample analysis program dr charles b sclar professor of geology who is already m the midst of a scientific investigation of lunar samples brought back by the apollo xi astronauts last july will also be assigned samples from the moon mission scheduled for launch on friday nov 14 goldstein and sclar will be performing different research on the moon samples assigned them using different equipment goldstein is part of a group of some 20 scientists to be added to the original list of 142 principal investigators the new group has been selected to perform certain expert ments that preliminary find ings from the apollo xi samples indicate should be done using the electron microprobe m the materials research center m addition to certain x-ray and metallograpmc tech niques goldstein will study the lunar fragments from the standpoint of a metal lurgist with experience m meteorltlcs by comparing ms findings with present knowledge of iron meteorites that have impacted on earth of chondrites stony meteorites and reheated iron meteorites and of man-made materials such as cast iron and heat-treated steels he intends to determine the structure composition and origin of the metallic minerals m the moon samples solar _ mamber of tha isttisl group of 142 scientists is attempting to assess the shock history of his samples by means of light and electron microscopy the apollo xi exhibit will be on display friday and saturday proposed dining hall lower right which will cost 51 9 million will accomodate 700 undergrates construction of th facility is still contingent on state approval of the plans 700 valley students to go to washington washington an estimated 700 students from lehigh valley colleges will participate in saturday's peace march on washington d c after joining in local activities coordinated with the second nationwide moratorium against the vietnam war on thursday and friday this estimate was based on bus reservations received by mrs anna hunt of hellertown who is in charge of arrange ments for lepoco — a peace committee of citizens from the lehigh pocono areas according to mrs hunt 12 buses have been chartered to transport students from the area to wash ington on saturday as well as the college students many citi zens representing various sectors of local church industry and business communities will join in the anti-war protest mrs hunt has stated that the high schools will be repre sented but not by huge crowds " the surprising fact is the adult and family participation involved she is very pleased with the overall participation and views the demonstration as " much bigger than the march on the pentagon lehigh valley washington d c t " is the unanimous choice of the lehigh valley's anti-war leaders as the place to be nov 15 last wednesday evening a meeting of the steering com mittee of the area anti-war movement was held to decide policy according to jim reilly 70 there will be no unified valley-wide program the emphasis will be on getting people to washington any local activities will be organized by the in dividual schools the responsibility of providing transportation for area stu dents to i ». c was undertaken by mrs hunt of lepoco an area peace group twelve buses will provide transportation for approximately 700 people in the state the chairman of the organization of united schools has requested that lehigh supply marshalls and march ers for a thursday death march in philadelphia the march is so named because it has been proposed that every marcher carry either the name of an american killed or a town destroy wilson college choir stages informal concert by 808 novas the wilson college choir presented a short informal concert on sunday after noon m conjunction with the lemgh glee club the 45 young ladies entrance was greeted with enthusiastic applause as was the entrance of the small german shepherd following them after a few playful momenta the concert began m earnest the concert was definitely impromptu the program was not followed closely and several additions were made the most well received of these additions were the two numbers done to guitar accompaniment because from the beatles album and as an encore dylan a ** turn turn turn the ladies were followed by the lehigh glee club who performed a very well received eat of songs university glee club and the wilson college choir perform together during annual concert see 700 page 4 see moratorium page 4 mmimmmmmmmmmmmmmm attention seniors those seniors who have not yet paid their 20 class as sessment for the yearbook with their picture and activi ties listed are reminded that the deadline is friday november 14 after that date assessment will rise to 30 checks payable to lemgh university should be dropped off at the student activities desk
