brown and white vel ii - ne 20 • bethlehem pa tuesday novenber 25 h9 fgff gridders trounce lafayette by howard frisch saturday afternoon lehigh university ripped the leopards of lafayette 36-10 before an ecstatic throng of 16,000 at taylor stadium the university gridders so dominated the game that now many feel that lehigh's football fortunes behind coach fred dunlap have finally turned the corner the win was lehigh's second straight over its cross-town rivals the last time that happened was 1963 more astonishing it was ths first time in seven yean that lehigh had gained back-to-back wins within a season two weeks ago ths packers edged bucknell 7-3 and finally the victory gave the packers a season record of 4-5-1 their best since 1961 don diorio was voted the game's most valuable player but his performance only mirrored the outstanding play by practically everyone wearing brown and white the defensive front four of mike holva bob fonte paul koepff and mike ellis did o excellent job of putting pressure on leopard quarterbacks ed baker and rich mckay together baker and mckay passed 34 times and were able to complete only 1 4 four of the passes were intercepted in fact starter baker was racked up so many times behind the line of scrimmage that he suffered a twisted knee midway ln the third period and didn't return the rest of the day charlie lieb capped a brilliant season with numerous tackles and a thrilling 70 yard touchdown run with time running out in the first quarter lafayette set up fbr a field goal attempt from the 31 but the kick never got off as fonte lieb and ellis crashed through to stuff the ball back into the turf lieb quickly snatched it up and raced untouched to the endzone ron shatter-berg who was perfect on the day with four conversions ln four tries gave lehigh a 7-0 lead at the quarter behind the front four and lieb the defensive secondary had a fine day notably fred bergdoll the senior cornerback who has been heavily-underrated his entire career clinched the game for the packers with lafayette mounting a comeback trailing 22-13 midway ln the final quarter mckay aimed an aerial for star end mike miller the ball bounced out of miller's hands into the waiting arms of bergdoll who then flew 52 yards tor the score with the score 29-13 , with only eight minutes to go the leopards for all intents and purposes gets charge from jcul the community relations subcommittee received its charge and other subcom mittees made progress reports at yesterday's meeting of the joint com mission on university life jcul the community relations charge gave tbe subcommittee the responsibility for determining the proper liaison with community groups and public officials and for encouraging and ensuring a regular flow of communication to and from the university in addition lt shall encourage mutual understanding and cooperation in responding to the needs of the neighborhood groups in the areas on which the university impinges and assist in providing resources available to the university to public and private agencies working in these areas the subcommittee will consist of stu dents faculty and administration to be chosen at a later date in other business the black student interests committee reported that they have . recommended to the educational policy committee edpol that consid eration be given to beginning a black studies program at lehigh in addition the committee has been assisting the president in evaluating black applicants for an administrative post william quay chairman of tte committee reported on a trip that he and eric ottervik vice provost had taken to three black colleges in tte south to explore possible exchange programs tte subcommittee on residence pre sented three areas ttey will be studying 1 selectivity ln tte residence halls 2 freshman segregation and 3 tte total character of tte lehigh residence picture jcul charged tte committee to consider tte first question immediately recog nizing tte efforts of tte residence halls council financial implications of lehigh becoming coeducational were discussed projections concerning operating costs for the 800 model recommended by the coeducation subcommittee were examined and it was decided that the problem of capital expenditures should be studied next in a brief report lawrence leder chairman of edpol's subcommittee on study its existing structure and define its present powers nobody really knows for sure what arcadia is or what lt should be doing he explained only after we've defined its present powers will we be able to assume more kasser says he would like to accomplish this definition of arcadia's power before christmas he plans to discuss the matter with members of the administration as well as the arcadians kasser tools that one of the major tasks facing arcadia next semester is solving tte problems caused by last year's abolition of class councils in his opinion several former class council functions are not lafayette game ends without usual riots saturday's lehigh lafayette football game ended peacefully compared to tte post game struggles in past rival confrontations the traditional battles were avoided be cause of the efforts by several campus groups to prevent violence the pajama parade and the candlelight pep rally were a disappointment according to most freshmen participating in tte pre-game activities the crowd was estimated at 3)0-300 people which included 97 band members after the slow beginning on friday night spectators were greeted at tte entrance to taylor stadium by student marshals who handed out leaflets urging a post-game peace the presence of the student marshals had little effect on tte sporadic fistfl ghts that occurred in the scramble for the goal posts commented one freshman ho cited an example of one student marshal getting in a fight over a piece of tte goal poet during the game and at half-time intermission announcements asked all people not to
