brown and white vol 81 no 21 bethlehem pa friday december 5 1969 866-0331 arcadia seeks faculty decision by dbs mcallister arcadia approved a motion wednesday calling upon the faculty at their meeting monday to vote on ths merits of a pro posal before them to allow student attendance at faculty meetings in another motion the solons asked president w deming lewis to invite 20 students chosen by the president of arcadia to monday's faculty meeting to join ln the discussion on the proposal see related story page 5 however arcadia declined to approve an amendment to act in conjunction with the student mobilization committee smc which is planning to send students to monday's faculty meeting regardless of whether dr lewis invites students to attend the event the solons also rejected a motion thai would have arcadia on its own approve the revision of social codes by the student life committee and declare them ln effect before lewis formally approves them next week the open faculty meeting issue dates from last spring when a group ef students tried to attend a faculty meeting but were asked to leave at the time arcadia supported a motion in favor of the students right to attend faculty meetings and the faculty voted to send the issue to the educational policy committee edpol for further consideration and to bring the matter up again before the faculty tms fall ' however edpol decided the issue of student attendance at faculty meetings was tied ln with the general subject of governance and that the entire matter should be studied by its subcommittee with a final report to the faculty in the spring _ however arcadia vice-president norm monhait who is also a member of edpol said that he did not see why the specific issue of whether students should be able to attend faculty meetings should be delayed for decision by the faculty for so long a period the proposal that monhait favored would allow student attendance at faculty meetings subject to the limitations of space or a decision of the faculty to call a committee of the whole student life committee acts to end women guests hours by tom foley as of tuesday dec 9 1969 the following motion recently drawn up by the student life committee may become effective depending on the action of presi dent lewis university regulations concerning women guest hours be elimin ated two statements of principle are also included ln the motion the first statement deals with the individual it states that this motion takes into account that at all times it is the duty of the students to respect the lights of the individual the second principle sets up guidelines to establish autonomy within the living group any living group may set up its own regulations if they are approved by the members of the living group and submitted to the proper dean for final consideration in effect this would pave the way for individual autonomy if the group does not set up regulations the motion will remove the university restrictions which set a midnight curfew during the week and a 2 a.m limit on weekends this motion is the end result of an extensive study by the student life com mittee the committee composed of students faculty and members of the administration has done a great deal of research arthur william rrune assis tant professor of civil engineering commented on the effort put into this study we studied the situation at other schools talked to representatives of the residence hall council the interfraternity council the gryphon society and arcadia moreover he feels that the attitude of the members of the committee towards the motion is essentially favorable towards the removal of existing regulations the study was recently completed and prof brune submitted the motion to president w deming lewis don parsons 70 president of arcadia recently conferred with dr lewis on how he would handle the situation in parson's words he will act on the motion himself and he will approve it he will implement the motion next tuesday after he has pre sented the motion to the faculty and explained to them his reasons for handling it in this manner the entire situation could become troublesome at this point if the faculty balks at the president's handling of the motion they may by a majority vote overrule dr lewis's decision this would bring about an immediate reaction from arcadia which has threatened to vote the women's hours regulations out of existence on their own if the administration does not act on it three art exhibitions to open within week famous japanese artist toshi
