lehigh university brown and white m thle hem pa monday january 12 it7o nr-hfcffr vol ii - no 24 thornburg pull-out poses problem for rhc the members of thornburg house have decided to cease all connections with the residence halls council rhc stated a letter to the brown and white in the dec 18 issue the withdrawal followed rhc's passage of the anti selectivity motion in november the acceptance of the non-selectivity process brought to s head the house members feelings that rhc did not accept and respect minority viewpoints according to lee fuller president of thornburg house at present no action has been taken to solve the problem of thorn burg's withdrawal because of the mid-year intercession clarence b campbell dean of residence described the case as high priority but added that no discussion has taken place the primary problem to be discussed is the validity of thornburg s withdrawal the house members stated we shall not obey any directives of that organization nor do we expect to be forcefully subjected to any proposals of it we expect to be treated as independent of rhc authority fuller stated that thornburg has only withdrawn from rhc and not from the residence halls system the question arises of whether the non-selectivity process should be implemented for the rhc members or for the entire residence system which would include thornburg house dean campbell stated at the dec 11 rhc meeting as of right now there will be no selectivity in the residence halls system at lehigh university when questioned after thornburg s announcement v campbell refused to comment on the intended meaning of his statement campbell favors the motion because the higher priority of claim belonged to the freshmen and not to the upperclass residence ball men the non-selectivity process would be conducted as a lottery with each house submitting a list of the desired applicants the student on the other hand would submit a card stating his first and second choices in a dry run campbell figured the happiness quotient to be 90 per cent that is the percentage of student choices matching house choices the fact that 90 per cent of the choices were matched has not claimed thornburg house the members view the non-selectivity motion as a threat to their group unity the letter to the editor stated thronburg house offers something nearly unique not only by lehigh standards but by the standards of nearly all other schools in the nation a purely voluntary group spirit and unity without the coercion malarky and pledging of a fraternity the members of thornburg feel that a variety of living concepts can solve the problem of rejectivity and the decision of being selective or non-selective should be left up to the individual house b&w photo by butt
