lehigh university brown and white vol 81 no 29 844-0331 bethlehem pa friday february », l?70 sedmak elected vp of arcadia by tom foley richard sedmak 71 emerged as victor in the inter arcadian vice presidential voting held during that body's meeting wednesday night the only candidate with experience on the administrative council the group of which the arcadian vice president is chairman he defeated william alpert 71 and robert frazier 71 officially by acclaimation contacted after the meeting sedmak gave his thoughts on the prospects for the future referring to what he called the group interaction he expressed the hope that he could keep the council operating with the efficiency with which it had begun to handle operations he further stated that " the potential is fantastic the administrative council was formed to relieve the members of arcadia from what norm monhait 70 called the merely mechanical tasks of administra tion 1 it came into exlstance during the fall of 69 with monhait then arcadia's vice president as its head sedmak plans to make it a body which will do the back ground work and refine bills before they are sent to arcadia aside from the administrative council sedmack stated vice president's other duties the vice president must also be public relations man ... an advisor on the executive committee of arcadia . . . and a member of all of arcadia's standing committees richard sedmak u to take steps to prevent more muggings the university announced it will take action as a result of a recent rash of muggings on campus following an ex pression of concern by arcadia president james kasser several specific proposals were adop ted the city offered to increase its campus patrol capt donchez plans to adjust the present campus patrols and authorize extra patrols similar to those used during special events or on big weekends a conference on the situation was held tuesday kasser preston parr dean of student life charles w brenn&n dean of students and robert p shurtleff assist ant dean of residence were present for the administration capt arpad kery of the bethlehem city detectives and capt frank donchez of the campus police department represented their respective organiza tions representatives of the ifc and the rhc were also present the university will also consider the practicality of lighting the areas in which the incidents occurred the various living groups have been asked to show greater caution about whom they admit to their parties new dean concerned with black activity by jeff brindle since february 1 nathan w harris has been serving the university as assistant dean of student life dean harris believes that the problems confronting the university are similar to those facing other schools throughout the country as assistant dean of student life harris will deal with the problem of satisfactory black participation in a predominately white university harris feels that positive steps to the solution of this problem have been taken through the formation of the organisation for the enhancement of afromanity oea and the oea cultural center however harris also stated that black participation in the university could be improved through increased black enrollment a black studies pro gram and more social opportunities in addition to aiding black students harris will work with the admissions and fin ancial aid offices the new dean will attempt to sell the university's educational and cultural opportunities to prospective black students however harris will not be responsible for recruiting black faculty members the dean stated that could not offer constructive criticism about campus housing for needs more time to study the university's situation the dean noted that the social life in this university appears to revolve around the hill but there does not seem to be any intense rivalries between the residence halls and the fraternities before coming to the university harris worked for the philadelphia united fund where he organized residental solicitations for the philadelphia area the new dean feels that the experience he gained will be an asset now harris became interested in the university scene through friends who were involved with college counseling a university faculty member interested harris in coining to lehigh dean harris attended lincoln university and recently pursued graduate study in communications at temple university harris compares his life at lincoln to lite on this campus for lincoln is located in a rural area and the majority of students leave on weekends dean harris is a bachelor and currently resides on delaware avenue in fountain hill during the weekends the dean plans to travel and visit friends in philadelphia and new york city dean harris office is located in room 203 in the university center dean nathan harris eco week the recent economy week at the university was designed to provide insights into economics as seen by some of the leading experts in the field today these included milton friedman and halm ben shahar of israel also included in the activi ties were panel discussions for coverage of the ben shahar lecture and news on the panel dis cussions see page four free market urged by famous economist by robin reinhold milton friedman professor of economics at the university of chicago lectured in packard auditorium last night on the intentions vs results of government economic policy in which he stated ms solutions to current economic problems friedman described himself as a black reactionary in the darkest hue he continued by drawing si ml llari ties between his viewpoints ai social and economic prob lems and those opinions held by the new left the two stress the obliquity of society according to him given the power the new left would solve the nation's problems by implementing socialism friedman's solution was to employ the system of free enterprise on prob lems now handled by the government he believes that issues which are made com pulsory by the government usually achieve an opposite result from the desired goal he cited urban renewal segregation and the farm problem as examples according to friedman the introduction of competition in the form of a free market would resolve many issues during the question and answer period he applied the free market system to the national issue of ecology his conclusion was that the population could choose between the price to live in a polluted atmosphere and the price to clean the polluted atmosphere he regarded the latter choice as better because in the end it would be less expensive friedman also applied the system of the free market on the school systems he stated that voucher slips should be given to students according to fried man the government monopolizes the school systems and does not offer the student the freedom of choice the slips would enable the student to vote on the school he wishes to attend at present the government applies a political approach to cases where it is perfectly permissible for the individual to have a choice stated friedman he describes it as a great vice in the american system assuming the free market system of goods is similar to the system of thought friedman applied economic principles to the social problems now being the target of the new left's ammunition friedman stated they label his philosophy as participatory demo cracy now knowing that the free market system is the solution what they talk about he knows how to achieve remarked friedman he added that his theory of econo nomics gives the individual the free dom to pursue his own interest as lons as he dots not interfere in the lives of others he defined this as participatory democracy dr milton friedman see
