environmental enlightenment the ecology action group eag outlined plans wednesday for a proposed environmental day at the university april 22 arcadia will be asked to sponsor the day m part according to doug griffes the group's moderator the schedule will include a workshop lectures a panel discussion community publicity and local education on environmental studies the workshop will consist of table displays concerning specific pollution problems m the lehigh valley brief explana tions will be given of each subject on display the lectures have not been chosen yet but the eag expects to present one ecology expert of national stature and two local officials involved m ecological affairs the panel discussion will be composed of the two local officials and three prominent political figures the community publicity will be concerned primarily with informing people about activities at the university and plans call for the fifth scheduled activity to include short assembly talks on ecology at local secondary schools in addition to outlining plans for the national environmental day the group announced that arrangements are being made to distribute traffic tickets m the local area this friday the tickets will remind people that automobiles are a contributing factor to the pollution problem topics to be discussed at the next eag meeting are the university's cancellation of a fellowship for environmental studies and the proposal to establish a committee to investigate the university's role m local pollution problems b&w photo by camana one of the five freshman seminars currently being held on high immediate relevance topics freshman participating m the program consider the seminars an important part of their academic experience frosh seminars face problems by robin reinhold the freshmen seminars which have completed the first semester of the two year experiment are considered a success , by the majority of the participants but thomas haynes professor of philosophy and director of the program has stated that the university ml ght have to cancel the seminars because of the lack of funds when asked their opinions about the possible cancellation freshmen participants remarked that lt would be a disappointment and mistake and that it would mean losing something one freshman regarded his seminar as a useful and interesting experience while another stated it helps students because they must do their own research there was no dissenting faculty par ticipant according to frank colon associate professor of government and seminar leader of the individual and the organization ralph kraft professor of metallurgy said the seminars are important it increases the faculty-fresh men contact he added that he never saw a freshman m a discussion situation all five faculty members are continuing as seminar leaders next semester each freshman questioned stated that he would continue m the program if there was an opening when the decision was made to initiate the program some faculty members believed that the freshmen might be unprepared and that they really didn't want them said haynes one freshman claimed there was no work you only had to write a paper and read three books another felt the work was easy because you could do it when you wanted to the only improvements that were sug gested came from the faculty segment colon stated that the program should be limited so that maximum participation could be achieved he added that he saw no reason for the traditional grading system kraft viewed the improvements as insignificant robert jones associate professor of social relations stated that there needed to be certain structural improvements the seminars were initiated after a study of the university's cultural climate showed that there was much disenchantment among the freshmen after spending a semester at the university freshmen soon thought lt to be a glorified high school according to haynes then the faculty voted to present highly relevant topics to respond to the disenchantment haynes said lack of funds was not the primary reason the administration must consider the cancellation of the seminars calling lack of manpower a great factor m deciding haynes described lt as individual sacrifice lottery held saturday on residence by robin reinhold the residence halls council rhc random selection was held saturday to decide the status of students entering an upper classman residence hall a student had the possibility of receiving his first second or third choice of houses ln addition to the waiting list the non-selectivity process was initi ated after rhc's proposal was accepted by clarence campbell dean of residence on dec lt . he concluded that the higher priority of claim belonged to the fresh men and not to the upperclass residence hall men the hew system is conducted by a random drawing m which the freshman submits a card of his two preferable choices this card is then matched against the living unit's list of preference if the choices match the student is m the living section if not the second choice will be matched in the same manner the random selection will give freshmen an equal chance at ths available openings and allow ths houses to fill vacancies with b aw photo by camana construction has started on the proposed 2.6 million residence halls the complex will include six individ ual living units m three three-story buildings with accomodation for 208 students the housing was m response lo the possibility of the university going coeducational paul
