publications to the office of public information to the office of the bursar to the mailroom the policy of the university is not to release infor mation in the form of names addresses and other personal data on students to any outside institutions commercial or not yet despite the best of intentions of guarding the student's privacy unsolicit ed mall apparently addressed from uni versity lists manages nevertheless to find its way to the lehigh students and no one apparently knows how for example many freshmen recently receiv ed subscription solicitations from time magazine in their campus post office boxes whose addresses are not known ex cept by the students and their relatives many upperclassmen have also received applications for gulf oil credit cards mrs catherine franklin supervisor of the university mailroom stated that no mailing lists are released to anyone by this department this she qualified by adding that seminar mailing lists in which the department of another university might request a listing of the members of the corresponding university department do exist however of other than these and the inter-university mailing lists mrs franklin had no knowledge the student directory as the source of information was donated by john murphy director of the university publications two thousand directories are printed yearly 400 of which being sold directly at the bookstore with the others being sent to administrators and faculty copies re maining are discarded murphy added that as stated in the directory lt is publish ed for the convenience of faculty staff and students of lehigh he further made it clear how strictl y his office follows this code commercial use is not authorized he brought out the possibility of one com mercial organization selling students names to others asked how unwanted mail could follow university students off cam pus mr murphy had no idea in fact he continued his office relies on the registrar's office for updating directory issues and does this only once at the be ginning of each year he concluded by saying " no information leaves his office gary marshall sits in front of some of the apparatus used in his ecology experiment the experiment one of two sponsored by the university's sic logy department concerns tha reclamation of contaminated streams jcul meeting to address residence system tuesday the question of revising the residence system will be discussed at an open meeting of the joint commission on university life jcul sub-committee on residence at 7:30 p.m tuesday ln room 303 of whitaker lab robert jones associate professor of social relations characterised the meeting as an attempt at interaction he celt this would give everyone a chance to air their views on the system the meeting will begin with reports from the chairmen of the three jcul sub committees this will serve as an introduction to the various problems such as fresh man segregation selectivity and the impact of coeducation there will then be a period during which anyone interested may make a formal statement the meeting will conclude with a period of questions and general state ments jones urged a large turnout of all those interested in developing ways to improve the residence hall system short funds cause end to fellowships by pat hendrick lack of funds will force the termination of the fellowships for environmental studies at the end of the current semester according to george r jenkins director of the office of research the funds available will be exhausted by the end of this academic year administered by the university the national science foundation fellowships have been used ln studies of environmental pollution the expenditure of the 75,000 grant has been spread over three years culminating this year ln projects by gary marshall and herbert yee both of the biology department in regard to continuing the university's environmental studies jenkins is hopeful that other hinds will be obtained from sources such as the united states public health service asked whether he felt the work conducted to date had been successful jenkins replied absolutely jenkins feels that future funds wiil come from training grants providing a general i topic area for the recipients but leaving the final decision to the individual student the present system will according to jenkins hopefully be expanded to provide six fellowships in the near future and 10 as the program of environmental studies grows professor thomas clement cheng of the biology department feels that any future fellowships awarded the university will be of a different nature than the current fellowship for environmental studies the present program of fellowships is a blanket program providing too broad a field of topics the training grants described by jenkins will require the student to declare a limited topic for his project before he may begin work one of the recipients of this year's fellowships was gary a marshall a biology research assistant intended as a project for his doctorate thesis mar shall chose the reclamation of streams contaminated by municipal and industrial sewerage in new jersey working in conjunction with the state of new jersey marshall concentrated his attention on waters in warren county he is attempting through a study of damage done to water quality fish and invertebrate life to determine whether a polluted creek might be reclaimed marshall began his work in april 1969 and hopes to be finished by october 1970 he says that he will continue with or without the fellowship funds according to jenkins should the university be able to manage a funds surplus when the fellowship has been terminated marshall will receive first priority the other fellowship student herbert w yee is investigating cellular defense mechanisms in molluscs his project is concerned with the ability of shellfish to accumulate large amounts of noxious chemicals such as ddt the importance of yee's work is illustrated by the huge amounts of shellfish consumed annually at present yee's project is three fourths complete he hopes to be finished by the termination of the fellowship according to jenkins the termination of the fellowship for environmental studies does not mean the end of studies on environmental pollution at the university the studies will be continued as financial aid is secured studies such as these conducted by men like marshall and yee should help to shed light on the growing crisis of the pollution at our environment hope fully the reception of further fellowships will put the university in a position to help ln dl scovering the crux of our environ mental problems and to propose solutions to the dilemma now facing us harriman to lead informal talks in addition to the formal lectures averill harriman will give in grace hall february 17-18 the former u s ambas sador to the paril peace talks will be available for informal discussions on several occasions students and faculty may speak with former ambassador harriman in the university center following his wednes day evening talk at breakfast and lunch eon thursday in the osboume room and at dinner that evening in the asa packer room harriman former governor of new york is this year's guest in the jacob blausteln lectures in international rela tions at lehigh the formal
