lehigh university brown and white vol ii no 37 bethlehem pa friday march *. 1970 u-omi leviathan to increase spectrum of u lectures leviathan the university's student government club which sponsored the shapp casey debate also plans to sponsor a drug symposium and panel discussion on urban problems in governmental laws according to interim president john fields the drug symposium tenatively scheduled for march 17 will include northampton county district attorney charles spaziani clarence b.campbell university dean of residence a state legislator to discuss upcoming drug legislation and possibly william newman of the university psychology department as moderator gene principato leviathan's corresponding secretary has contacted philadelphia district attorney arlen specter and new jersey governor william cahlll to serve on the pro posed panel but has not yet received a reply in addition t he group is setting up a program with marie weil coordinator of community relations through which five students will work in washington as staff members of congressmen the program will be open to any university student field is also attempting to establish a lecture series dealing exclusively with national affairs since the blaustein lecture series deals only with international politics he stated that one lecture series per year is inadequate for a school this large during the spring semester leviathan hopes to get sen hugh scott r-pa to speak before the primary elections in may vice president agnew is also being con sidered for appearance but agnew has stated that no campus will invite him to speak according to fields who added that the club ought to extend an invitation to him leviathan was founded to fill the vacuum left by the political science assembly's disband ment last september it has already done more than the political assembly had ever accomplished said fields anyone is eligible there are no qualifications for membership in the club although most of the members are government or interna tional relations majors anyone is eligible to join leviathan is not affiliated with any political party and will not support any political candidate for public office the club will act only as clearinghouse for members who wish to work for a candidate leviathan is working for greater student involvement in local national and international problems said fields though a large number of student at the university are from new york new jersey and new england they should take an interest in local politics since the lehigh valley is going to be their home for four years stated fields at present the club has 80 members the officers are john fields president steve bliss vice-president gene prlnci pato corresponding secretary gar y sims treasurer and don lodge recording tturtltii dr robert jones dr roy herremkohl wilson fellowship awarded to senior james r tannenbaum 70 an international relations major has been named as a woodrow wilson designate for 1970 along with 1,152 other college students from the u s and canada tannenbaum was chosen from among the more than 12,000 students nominated by their professors for the annual competition sponsored by the woodrow wilson national fellowship foundation to find the best prospective college teacher the foundation's selection committee picked the designates as the most intellec tually promising 1970 graduates planning careers as teachers explained dr hans rotwnhaupt the foundation's president taking scholastic excellence for gran ted in our nominees we look further for those human qualities that make good even great teachers stated rosen haupt joel g ciemmer 111 70 a history major received an honorable mention in the fellowship competition designates names are sent to all graduate school deans in the u.s and canada with the recommend at ion that they receive a fellowship from the institution of their choice the names of those receiving honorable mentions will be cir culated to graduate school deans without the recommendation of the designates as chairman of the university's cross roads africa program tannenbaum spent the summer of 1969 in upper volta within the international relations field he specializes in modernization an interdisciplinary approach to the problems of economic and political development in emerging nations james tannenbaum housing report denies exodus results of report on residential preferences of lehigh undergraduates 1 conducted by prof roy c herrenkohl and george runt were submitted to the joint commission on university life jcul at a meeting on wednesday the report requested by the university community sub-committee of the university goals committee studied the exodus of undergraduates from afc-campus to off campus residences according to herrenkohl there has been no real movement of large numbers of stu dents away from on-campus housing he added however that certain factors inhibit an accurate assessment of students movements from one type of living situation to another citing the change in recent years of the university's fraternities from town to campus oriented organizations herrenkohl said we can't tell he said that when the frat ernities moved on-campus many students living off campus came with them changes like this tend to make a comparison of the number of students varying the status of their housing situation difficult herrenkohl explained the relatively small percentage of students returning to on campus housing from off campus quarters by saying that the number moving oft is relatively small there may then be a significant difference in the percentages of students moving on and off campus but the actual number is small regarding reasons for the few men moving from campus rather than larger numbers he named lack of transportation and quantity of apartments this i suspect is the real preventive he said herrenkohl declined to single cut one particular aspect of the report as most sig nificant according to the professor that's like asking what the most important p&ft of your body is dissatisfaction by some with the residence halls sytem and the large number of students satisfied with fraternity life were among the more noteworthy of the responses received also he said he regarded the fact that proportionally equal numbers of students move from the two-on-campus living situations to be important the reasons for moving he said tend to be an individual sort of thing regarding an alternative form of housing on campus herrenkohl said this has got to be done he continued saying that there is a need for the university to recognise off campus residents as a living group he has refused to draw any conclusions saying i've supplied the data and now " i think it's lip to the men of the commission herrenkohl said that he felt his limited dealings with students hindered his ability to draw conclusions and that the commission can come out with many broader clearer conclusions assistant dead at student life william l.quay said of the exodus that * if any thing there is more of an increase in on-campus housing he added that if an alter native choice of housing were offered to those who have moved off campus i think a good number of them would come back quay said he was most impressed by the fact that each of the groups polled resi dence halls fraternity and off campus students wished to see their own particular type of living group expanded this he said indicates that students want diversity on the campus according to quay an al ternative choice in housing would provide a supplement to what we already have of a sytem encompassing choices of just a room random selection partial se lectivity total selectivity and fraternities quay said i like that idea he contin ued saying that our present system was a monolithic superimposed system the dean said that the on-campus resi dence system should be broad enough to have a thornburg house and a mcchntlc marshall a summary of the report on residen tial preferences of lehigh undergradu ates noted the high degree of satisfaction with the fraternities or as herrenkohl put it the happiness quotient and the lower degree of satisfaction with the residence halls to be " on one's own was the principal reason given by students who live off campus the report went on to question however " what there is about the social and intellectual environment of an off campus apartment or room that oversha dows the inconvenience of its location of the methods given as most desirable to improve the livlngconditions at the uni versity coeducation and changes in the residential system were given in that or der here the report raises a question cf where the coeds will be housed students who have left the campus tend to avoid returning because they would us ually have to return to the type of living situation residence hall or fraternity that hey left prep school wrestling tourney this
