lehigh university brow n and white bethlehem pa . tuesday march 10 1970 846-0331 vol 81 - no 38 plans completed for anti draf t week by ken siegel representatives from area colleges and high schools met wednesday night to coordinate plans for anti-draft demonstrations during the week of march 16-20 mike klmmel a university sophomore conducted the meeting at his apartment kimtnei head of the student mobilization committee smc discussed the proposed activities with other anti-draft sympathizers lie stated that the organization was in great need of money to finance their events in addition he told the other representa tives that the demonstrations must transcend the campus to include involvement of members of the community kimmel said that the smc will call for the immediate acquisition of draft counselors on campus he said that this would be an unalterable demand that the university couldn't justifiably refuse 1 ' on monday of anti-draft week the demonstrators will circulate the we won't go petition which states that those who sign the form refuse to participate in the military service as long as the united states is involved in vietnam and laos students will also set up workshops to discuss the draft and the means for avoid ing it kimmel suggested that the representatives from cedar crest should lead a discussion examining the evils of the draft from a feminine point of view tuesday's activities will be highlighted by a rally in grace hall kimmel said that the featured speakers will be dr vion who is a university law professor and a member of the american civil liberties union and either david hawk or dr william sloane coffin on wednesday anti draft participants will go into the community to inform the people of their activities and to seek additional support thursday will ell max the week's protest that day local draft boards will be picketed kimmel suggested a multi level approach in harrassing the draft boards he said that some people should sit in at the draft board and ask draft officials questions covering a wide spectrum of subjects others should repeatedly make . telephone calls further to bewilder the draft people and others should picket outside con demning the draft board or recruiting station as a public health hacard kimmel said that he was going to inform the local police of the planned demonstra tions he added that he would request that the constabulary protect the demonstrators from hacktors the two-hour meeting was marked by a winners of monday night's rhc elections from left to right mark crescen ti league of woman voters moravian col lege the bethlehem garden club and warren hills regional high school jim d'agostino 70 opened the meeting by calling for volunteers for he april 22 environmental day saying that's the big push the morning segment of the teach-in will encompass various workshops and participation by guest personalities appearing will be conservationist paul petzoldt and folks inter elaine white petzoldt a wyoming conservationist is the director of a mountain survival school in the rockies miss white who participated in the hudson river clear water project has appeared in concert with folksinger pete seeger the afternoon program will feature petzoldt and congressman robert roe of new jersey from 3-5 p.m a petition to washington congressmen will he circulated through bethlehem the petition drawn up by charles unsold 71 and prof charles vihon is intended to draw the lawmakers attention to the growing public opinion about pollution that evening a panel discussion will be conducted among those expected to participate are councilmen charles snelling of allentown and robert snyder of bethlehem prof francis j tremble v and dr allen brandt of the homer labs bob fonte 70 said that the group is seeking funds to finance the april 22 project to augment the money allocated leag by arcadia the group is selling pages of an ad journal to local businesses to pay for the day's activities robert rodale t>l attended the meeting and said that he hopes to represent rodale press inc on the environmental day as a speaker he said that he would be interested in addressing the gathering on pollution as a function of technology and organic gardening rodale said that biological control methods should be substituted for our present chemical modes of controlling pests and raising food lauren ota 70 outlined the group's progress in the teaching program for pollu tion education in the local high schools representatives of the group visited palisades whiffen housman top rhc officers by robin reinhold the residence halls council rhc elected officers to the executive council in a meeting monday including 11 of the 12 upperclass living units each with four officers three of the four freshmen representatives and the president of mccuntlc marshall house m-mv those elected take office immediately rick whiffen 71 president of m-m a-l defeated rich wasch 71 f rhc's treasurer in the presidential election after each candidate gave statements and outlined goais other officers elected were glover hausman vice-president rich wasch treasurer for a second term mark crescenti corresponding secretary and blake r heffner recording secretary a social chairman was not elected at monday's meeting whiffen saw the reallocation of funds in the next budget as the principle change the president must make to alleviate a lot of problems mainly duas ke stated that the concessions fund is like a tax and that much of the money should come back to the freshmen the concessions fund which are supported by vending machines the laundry service and pin ball machines total close to 12,000 a year these funds are used to finance among other things rhc scholars hips and the freshmen tea during parents weekend whiffen felt th university ought to assume the responsibility of the scholar ships and that rhc hot support the tea since most freshmen don't attend anyway he felt the funds could be used for " more constructive things like lectures he added that freshmen ought to have better representation on rhc 11 and proposed such changes on the executive council as combining the positions of recording and corresponding secretary into one position and eliminating the position of social chairman he supported investigation concerning the possibility of co-educatlonal dormitories and the possibility of experimental integration of freshmen and upperclass men living units corporate responsibility was also a major issue in the presidential election in a prior meeting officers of emery house had expressed disapproval of the idea that corporate responsibility should hold officers responsible for a house member's use of drugs at that time rhc decided to invite clarence b campbell dean of residence to explain the term in a future rhc meeting whiffen said he would not take a stand until campbell had made a statement on the individual house officers responsibilities in the vice-presidential election glover housman 72 of m-m a-2 defeated bob snyder 72 of emery arid dave watson 71 of mcconn voters gave their first and second choices so if a candidate did not receive a majority of the votes the man with the least was dropped from the balloting the election did not necessitate a re-vote rich wasch elected treasurer for a second term after an unsuccessful presidential bid also did not take a stand on the corporate responsibility issue monday night in agreement with whiffen he advocated more freshmen participation on the executive council and the combining of the two secretarial positions rhc should also take more of a stand on campus and national issues such as coeducation and the moiitorium wasch said the major area of discussion centered around the corporate responsibility issue the first two candidates favored the idea of not making officers responsible for the use of drugs while watson was in favor of extending corporate responsibility of offi cers to the case of drug use housman the newly-elected vice-president felt that an officer should only be held responsible if the student was blatantly violating the rule and stated that it was not the officer's responsibility if the student is in his room watson hous man's opponent in the elec tion thought rhc ought to assume this duty instead of leaving it up to the university the office of treasurer was given by acclamation to rich wasch the present treasurer of rhc while mark a crescen ttni 72 of m-m a-l was declared corresponding secretary when no other nominations were made blake r heffner 72 was elected recording secretary defeating mark crescentini 72 of m-m as a member of thor nburg house which withdrew from rhc last fall heffner stated that he has a lot of friends in m-m while making his campaign statement the office of social chairman was left vacant until the next meeting of rhc whiffen who had advocated the elimina tion of the position stated that according to the constitution the executive committee would be required to elect a man to the job but added he hoped to phase it out he further mentioned that if there appeared to be a
