brown and white vol 81 no 40 bethlehem pa tuesday march 17 1970 866-0331 ccc has sit-in no bomb by jeff balsai cedar crest college for women tn allentown a normally quiet campus was surprised by a sit-in m the business office friday by members of the college's afro-american society protesting " injustices leveled by the cedar crest college community a bogus bomb threat capped a day one secretary described as " hectic the afro-american society released a statement m which they said that the blacks at cedar crest college are demon strating to protest the injustices perpetra ted by the cedar crest college community we are tired of being neglected and put off we want action now 1 twelve members of the society conducted the sit-in with all 18 members supporting the protest m spirit the society wanted to meet with college president pauline tompkinsand four other members of the administration to discuss the list of 20 demands presented by the society to the administration mar 5 among the things desired by the society are 2 full-time black faculty members added to the r>6 full-time faculty members presently employed by cedar crest two of whom are black a 15 per cent increase m student enrollment through admission of more blacks to supplement the 760 students enrolled at the college tutors for blacks and representation by blacks on student faculty committees two demands the administration says have already been achieved 2,500 m funds for the afro american society and a car for use by the society also desired the hiring of blacks for positions on all campus staffs from ad min istration to service staffs a relevant black studies program and more black authors m the bookstore and library they also demanded the removal of all racist employees from the college staff the members of the society wanted to meet with the five administration members at 4 p.m on mar 12 or 13 but because of prior commitments of a serious nature all five could not t present on the and outs of draft resistance and avoidance in the elevator lobby on the second floor of the university center to mark the start of anti-draft week parti ci pants in anti-draft week plan to write their draft boards informing them of mvmry activity in which they take part in or der to " inundate the boards with paperwork which the protesters hope wili slow down draft call-ups for some time those participating in the protest wish to make as much work and annoyance for the draft boards as possible and plan for a steady flow of " nuisance mail all week ecology action group to present pollution symposium tomorrow by pat hendrick the l«»high ecology action group leag will present a valley symposium on pollution tomorrow evening at 7;30 p.m m the osborne room of the university center titled solid waste and incineration m conjunction with city beautification the program will feature a film and panel discussion the film the third pollu tion deals with the problem of solid pollution and will serve to set the tempo for the symposium following the film earli member of the panel is expected to give a short statement of his position on the topir of solid pollu tion the discussion will then be opened to questions from the audience the panel moderated by prof thomas m havnes of the philosophy department is comprised of representatives of several organizations m the lehigh valley among them are michael kaiser executive direc tor of the lehigh-northampton county joint planning commission dr george smith chief of the bi-city health bureau and fuad e jarrah assistant allentown city engineer who is considered an expert on solid waste management other panel members are dr e everett macnamera research associate profes sor m the university's center for marine and environmental studies councilman glenn h thomas of allentown and mrs marguerite mood of quakertown mrs mood plans to run for president m 1972 on the environmental ticket haynes said he anticipates a fruitful program he describes the topic as one of great immediate relevance to residents of allentown bethlehem easton and their surrounding communities a workable arrangement for the future has got to be worked out havnes stated he also said that he felt his role m the symposium would be to present the topic and then let the panelists go to work of the april environmental day he said the 22nd has got to come off that's a pretty important deal pete skinner 70 coordinator of the symposium said that an added feature for the mar 18 program would be a preview of some of the group's workshop pro jects for the environmental day he noted that refreshments would be served community relations council outlin es duties and methods the university's newly-created community relations council crc assigned duties to members and discussed the possible methods of establishing contact with the surrounding community at its first meeting last monday the council was set up m november by the joint commission on university life upon the recommendation of the university's goals committee ugc for determining the proper laison with community groups and public officials it will also act as a " clearing house for joint activities according to the final report of the ugc's sub committee university and society at the meeting the drawing up of an agenda was assigned to mrs marie well co ordinator of volunteer programs and to john e cragin 73 and charles s steel 72 both arcadia appointees paul franz vice-president of the development office will submit a report on a nom inating committee wmchwould examine the eligibility procedures of each council num ber all the members agreed that the election of officers ought to be postponed until further date the next crc meeting will bo mar 23 at 2:30 p.m b&w
