lehigh university brown and white vol 81 no 50 bethlehem pa tuesday april 21 1970 866-0331 glee club salutes beethoven a.n cleaver concert superb by t b angel i am constantly amazed at how a university with so few music majors and such a small number of music courses can consistently produce suc h a high quality musical performances saturday's night's a n cleaver concert was no exception as the choirs of lehigh and cedar crest c ollege combined in a superb per formance as lt ls the 200th anniversary of the birthday of beethoven this year's concert was devoted entirely to his music unfortunately the concert got off to a rather slow start with two of beethoven's less significant choral works the heavens are telling and the " hallelujah chorus from the mount of olives . the first number a simply conceived anthem is quite majestic in style however it never reached its full potential due to the somewhat uninspiring conducting of dr wilbur holl man of cedar crest while dr holl man conducts with a great deal of emotion he fails somehow to tran smit this enthusiasm to his musicians what could have benn majestic in t he heavens are telling turned out to be dis appointing the second number was some what better but still failed to reach its full potential as mr holl man insisted on conducting the combined choirs and or chestra ln the same manner he would have conducted a small chorus both choirs displayed an extraordinary amount of talent and are very well trained it is a pity that the performance suffered due to indefinite direction the next work on the program was the " leonore overture no 3 opus 72a from beethoven's only opera " fidelio the opera ls basically about a noblewoman's devotion of her imprisoned husband beethoven was so self critical that he wrote no less than four overtures for this opera in his attempt to find the ideal form leonora overture no 3 is by far the longest and the greatest of the four but it is of such magnitude that it is not quite appropriate as merely a prelude to the longer work the interpretation of this overture requires a conductor of no small mettle and jonathan elkus was certainly such the opening melodic section quickly became very light and spirited the off stage trumpet call initiating a dramatic change of key was well performed i can honestly say though that i have never heard such extraordinary technique as that exhibited by the second violins in the presto section the section wandered in a frenzy until the horns returned with the heroic theme of the overture to end the movement in a stirring climax the intermission was superb as usual the second half of the performance featured beethoven's mass in c opus 82 under the direction of professor robert b cutler the mass featured four student soloists heidi hunter soprano bonnie hall mexxo - soprano tom darrow tenor and michael kearney bass this is one of beethoven's finest choral works and lt was given a sensitive and accurate interpretation by professor cutler the mass ls unique among the works of beethoven in tliat its thematic sources are vocal in character rather than instru mental as ln the orchestral works the stirring rendition of the sanctus wos exemplary of the enthusiasm exuded by the performers for being primarily a choral conductor professor c choral conductor professor cutler deserves a great deal of recognition for his fine handling of the delicate balance between the orchestra and the choirs his confidence radiated to the musicians giving them inspiration to perform whole heartedly of special note among the soloists are tom darrow and bonnie hall darrow trembley eco article in syndicated series an article by dr francis j trembley university biology professor will appear in a nationally syndicated series on environmental pollution which has been distributed to seventy newspapers in this country and abroad trembley's article can man survivor is the fifth ln the six-part series entitled " the environment crisis sowing the seeds of action written by several eminent authorities on the subject of pollution for the enterprise science service ess in addition the lead article a ground swell of rising force by ess editor david hendin highlights the action taken by the lehigh ecology action group when the students ticketed 5,000 cars with the warning violation thia vehicle is preventing you from breathing clean air the series takes a look at the environmental crisis from the standpoint of a politician a presidential advisor a scientist a businessman and a 12 year-old student trembley joined the faculty ln 1928 and taught ecology and related subjects at tbe university for 42 years during this time he has been ln tbe forefront of tbe battle against pollution insecticides and overpopulation he ls often retained as a consultant in ecological problems and is in demand ae a speaker on ecological problems u takes part as earth day commences by pat hendrick the big day le almost here for the lehigh ecology action group leag tomorrow april 22 is earth day a long-awaited event for ecology men throughout the nation here at the uni versity our own eco action group has been working feverishly to complete plans for its earth day activities one feature of the earth day celebra tion that has been drawing quite a bit of attention is the leag exhibit ln the mart library the most striking part of tha display emphasizes just what the whole ecology movement is all about . garbage on entering the library lobby even the most casual observer is captured by what appears to be a misplaced portion of tha local dump in the middle of the floor lies an assortment of products of our advanced technological civilization the exhibit ls comprised of beer cans automobile tires and parts and just plain ordinary trash earth day begins at the university tomorrow at 10 a.m when the leag workshops open for public inspection this portion of the day's activities will feature two of the more significant facets of the ecology movement prevention of further pollution and population control to avoid the sort of future envisioned by thomas malthus present at the workshops will be paul petzoldt the keynote speaker for the evening program and elaine white afolk singer who has appeared ln concert with pete seeger and has worked on seeger's hudson river clear water project following the university band concert the earth day program will resume wtth addresses by francis trembley profes sor of ecology at the university marguerite mood a presidential candidate ln 1972 on the ecology ticket robert rodale 51 of the rodale press a proponent of organic gardening and pesti cides ln solving the current ecological crisis and maurice goddard secretary of pennsylvania's department of forests and waters the afternoon program should be to say the least an interesting one trembley is known for his outspoken nature regard -
