lehigh university brown and white vol 82 no i bethlehem pa friday september 18 1970 866-0331 officers elected by forum by george j bancroft at its first regular meeting yesterday the university forum elected its slate of officers working from resolutions prepared dur ing the 1970 conference on university life last week the forum elected a chairman vice-chairman and secretary treasurer dr ferdinand beer chairman of th department of mechanics and mechanical engineering was elected chairman following his election dr beer said i think it is an honor i'm going to the bookstore and buy a copy of robert's rules of order and exchange my sllderule for a heavy gavel he said the forum has a great deal to accomplish i n its first year dr 3«er then took over the meeting from dr w deming lewis university president who was acting chairman mike kasser 71 former president of arcadia until t rushanhtnp last sprine was elected vice-chairman of the forum dr c wlllam clump professor of chemical engineering was elected sec retary-treasurer another meeting of the forum will be at 4:10 p.m today m the osbourne room of the university center four representatives from the forum will be elected to the board of trustees two faculty members and two student members will be elected to the observer positions on the board other resolutions adopted by the con ference on university life to be considered by the forum are the creation of five forum standing committees committee members must also be members of the forum according to the recommended resolution the academic affairs committee will concern itself with changes in curricula courses and faculty admissions regis tration academic calendar library , com puter and the bookstore the student affairs committee will deal with social life and regulations athletics residence and dining registration and t aieiiuiir . short and long range planning in any area and the maintenance of the univer sity's physical plant will be handled by the prioinies planning and resources committee town-gown relations will be coordi nated by the community relations committee the committee on the university budget with the power to regularly review the overall budget of the university will be composed of one faculty and one student representative from each of the other four committees membership of the other committees will be 3t on academic affairs 3t on student affairs 24 on priorities planning and resources and 24 on community relations the committees will be half faculty and half students or as close to that distribution as possible anthony moffet last night at lehigh university moffet was a former director of pres nixon's office of students and youth his appearance was sponsored by the univer sity's forum for visiting lectures com mittee addressing a small group composed mainly of freshmen he said you're here mainly because you were channelled here he told the students to question the value of their education by looking at what comes out the other end of the tube he told them to observe the attitudes of sen iors and recent graduates suchquestion ing would result m a better understanding of education and its value according to moffet from his experience m government and m recent political campaign work he said he has learned that government education and society are built around fear he said the education system is built on the stud ent's fear of poor grades and on the fears between the different segments of the edu cation system faculty students and ad ministration the government according to moffet is the most isolated segment of our soc iety and washington d.c is the most lsat's the law school admission test will be administered on the follow ing dates saturday oct 17 1970 saturday dec 19 1970 saturday feb 13 1971 saturday april 17 1971 saturday t july 31 1971 this new schedule is designed to encourage law school applicants to apply earlier m the year university pre-legal advisors are strongly urging students to take the test or oct 17 the registration deadline for that test is sept 25 1970 bulletins of information including application forms are available m the government dept and the college of arts and sciences offices an informational meeting for all pre-legal students will be held at 7:30 p.m on sept 15 m the davis room of the u.c environment new program a new interdisciplinary undergraduate program leading to a major m environmen tal sciences and resource management has been adopted by the university for the fall semester the program embraces numerous disciplines within the university's three colleges students erecting the new major will utilize the resources of the departments of math ematics physics english chemistry geology biology civil engineering chemical engineering economics and government individual programs for each student m the program may be arranged to provide a concentration on a specific environmental problem sue has air or water pollution solid waste disposal or land planning a broad program may also be developed to create an awareness and understanding of the problems of the total environment the program will be directed by dr e everett macnamara assistant professor of geology and member of the center for marine and environmental studies it re places the former natural resources program dr macnamara praised the new pro gram stating there is no subject more relevant to society's needs than environmental planning for the future it is only through such programs that we can take an optimistic view of man's con tinued existence society's increasing demands for en ergy food living space and recreation al opportunities have altered and will continue to alter our environment the need for personnel trained to evaluate these alterations and to repair existing harmful or critical situations can only be met by an interdisciplinary approach dr macnamara explained that basic principles of economics are the core of the program he went on to reveal that the program is outlined so that the back grounds of math and science required to understand the complexity of man and his environment are established was poorly attended with less than 100 out of a possible goo under graduates participating m the discussions dean l r tripp who presided at the conference expressed disappointment at the turnout and cited lack of publicity as one of the reasons for the poor showing those who did attend debated the merits of a constitution proposed by ron klasko who is also a member of th ull-unlversity forum covering the organization of both the college and departmental lorums klasko's plan rails for the establishment of a business college forum whose purpose would be to bring students iiculty and administration into direct discourse with the goal of reviewing recommend ng and establishing policies for the college of business and economics and the van is departments therein for the t>etterment
