brown and white vol 82 no 4 866-0331 bethlehem pa tuesday september 29 1970 forum tables motion to suspend classes bv donald suss a motion to suspend all universit \ las ses for a one or two week period before election dav in novemtier was presented to the university forum last thursday by michael golden 71 the motion was tabled until the next regular forum meeting golden said that he would like the forum to deliberate the question of having a one or two week period before elections in november in which students ma lie allowed to eo home and work in the elections as is being done in most of the major universities vice-president for student affairs preston parr suggested tliat the motion's wording be changed from suspend classes . he said that the university had already contacted the internal revenue service concerning the suspension of classes and found tliat it was neces r.ary to relocate classes in order to make it legal this would mean that the classes during the j>eriod before elections would have to be made up some time during the academic year other new business dealt with by the forum included a motion by prof joseph mcfadden that anv motion place ri hefor the forum that was not on the agenda prior to the meeting be automatically tabled the motion passed in a unanimous oral vote it was also moved by robert frazier 71 that attendance be taken at each forum meeting and that the attendance figures l>e made public this motion also passed orallv dean william quav although not a member of the forum spoke to the assemblage about the relationship of the student affairs committee and an already established ad hoc committee on resi dence of the now defunct jcul he asked that the student affairs committee look into this immediatelv because recom mendations concerning residence must be made within the next two months the forum also completed discussion and passed the remainder of the resolu tion presented by dr norman melchert with little change the part of the reso lution passed called essentially for three major points 1 each committee will elect a chair man and \ ice chairman from among its members one officer beinr a student and the other a member of the faculty or administration 2 suscommittees will be established wherever necessary the chairman of anv subcommittee will be a member of the parent committee but non-meml-ers will be encouraged to participate as mem bers of these subcommittees 3 a steering committee will be established consisting of the officers of the forum and the chairmen and vice chairmen of the standing committees the function of the steering committee will be to prepare an airenda for each forum meetinc provide coordination and communication amone the committees and assign but not limit topics for in vestigation to the committees it was recommended by dr ferdinand beer forum chairman that all standing committees meet at the earliest oppor tunity to elect a chairman and vice <" hair man so that the steering committee can meet and arrange for the agenda and the date of the next forum meeting all committee assignments for the mem bers ot the forum were made bv yes terday afternoon . ..« w - w_____b_____________iiii _._. i i b&w photo hy camana area where two muggings took place over the weekend this painting by karl schrag is a mong three works stolen from the art collection in the university cen ter lounge three paintings missing at u according to prof francis j quirk curator of the university's permanent art collection a search is in progress to recover three paintings discovered miss i ng last mondav in making the disclosure thursday quirk refused to set anv value on the loss the loss has been brought to the atten tion of the bethlehem and campus police departments federal authorities and art dealers to date however the search has yielded no clues to the whereabouts of the paintings anyone wishing to con tribute information can contact one of the above groups the missing paintings are a framed watercolor bv philadelphia john lear this work titled recur rence measures 1 6 hv 19 inches painted in 1946 it depicts partially armor-clad returned veterans the dominant fore ground figure stands on a remnant of an ancient classic structure which appears to be sinking into the drv cracking land scape an oil painting by richard redd chair man of the university's fine arts depart ment entitled " fruits of summer this work depicts a slice of watermelon arden fruit and vegetables all against a neiitra russet back 1 round a semi abstract xirtrait bv karl schrag the heavil framed and glazed painting is oriental in its neutral color and is overpainted with dark strokes a bowl of carefully arranged flowers in the left foreground balances a figure at riidit volunteers council all interested students in the volunteers council should see miss barbara solt m room 202 of the university center u students mugged : one has flute stolen two muggings nn an attempted armed holdup occurred on campus over the weekend at 11:30 p.m friday between grace and price halls marvin border 71 was assaulted suffering a broken tooth and the loss ol a flute valued at 300 in the same incident three freshmen bee pilzner bruce malek and ted fedvnvshvn were beaten border said a group of puerto rican youths attacked him as he left grace hall he ran down taylor st toward parker ave he said one oi the guvs was running after me and caught up to me in the middle of packer ave in front ofthe power station he grabbed my shoulder and socked me in the mouth and broke mv tooth he threw a few more puncnes and i went down that's when i dropped my flute at the same time the three freshmen were confronted bv the rest of the group malek said that of the five youths who came in a blue 196 chevrolet convertible two pursued border and the other three accosted his group malek was the only one amone the three freshmen to be physically attacked but he received no serious injurv they're not after vour monev said pilzner thev just want to beat vou up i guess it's their idea of a joke the attempted armed holdup occurred at 0;30 p.m sundav when robert am 74 was approached bv iwo puerto ru an youths one carrying a pistol he was between coppee and lamberton halls when one of his assailants demanded that tie give me your money or i'll shoot you am carried no monev and as the pair backed off thev threatened to shoot him if he told anyone of the incident shortlv thereafter am called the bethlehem police the incidents are l>eing investigated bv the bethlehem police see forum page 4
