brown and white bethlehem pa tuesday october 13 1970 866-0331 vol 82-no 8 240 receive degrees in founder's day ceremonies the university honored three distinguished alumni and conferred degrees on 240 students during founder's day rere monies sunday in grace hall president w deming lewis reminisced during his address about his founder's day speech six years ago when he first became president at that time he re called he had little idea of the three major issues that have come up in the ensuing years coeducation student unrest and the financial situation lewis assured the group however that the advent of these issues has not changed the basic direction ideals and goals of the university he restated these goals in the words of asa packer " the acquisition of knowledge broadening of vision and enrichment of personal life lewis denoted the problems of finances as the most serious but said the univer sity should be able to remain in the black this year and on the average for the next ten years to stay solvent lewis said the univer sity must continue to rely on traditional sources of funds while cultivating new sources continuing to improve the pro ductivity of academic operations and taking care to develop and present to the public the value of the university on coeducation lewis said the decision to make the university coeducational re affirmed asa packer's goals of broaden ing vision and enriching personal life lewis also commended university students for following university rules and for civil behavior we don't have to agree with each other but we should agree on methods of disagreement he said on the subject of the university's public role and responsibilities lewis said the university should not make a busi ness of producing things or of providing services other than educational ones and should not engage directly as an insti tution in political or partisan causes we should he continued " help people to learn to be more effective in doing all of these things to do them in a manner which will benefit society to enjoy doing them and to enjoy life while doing them honorary doctor of engineering degrees were conferred upon frank c rabold and prof thomas t holme prof robert j myers received an honorary doctor of laws degree rabold a university trustee is assistant to the president and the manager of general services at bethlehem steel holme teaches administrative sciences at yale university and myers former chief actuary with the u.s social security administration is a professor of actuarial science at temple university the invocation and benediction were offered by rev stephen f.x flynn f advisor to catholic students here in the invocation rev flynn called on those graduating to apply our gift in a way that corresponds to the need of the human family the ceremonies concluded at the flagpole with the singing of the alma mater b&w photo by smar university president w deming lewis delivers the main address in the founder's da ceremonies held here sunday lewis listed financial stress student unrest and coeducation as the major problems facing the university b&w photo by noehren with an electrifying performance delaney and bonnie & friends headlined a concert including lee michaels at grace hall on friday night performing before a disappointing crowd of 2300 that caused the university to lose some 3000 the bramletts and their nine friends brought the au dience to their feet amid thundering applause lee michaels minus frosty and with a new drummer gave a performance of superb quality receiving a standing ovation that commanded an encore see related story on page 4 violence strikes campus drinker windows broken by b&w staff bethlehem and university police were kept busy over the weekend in the wake of a rash of crimes directed at students and university property a stabbing an attack on a girl a raid by some 25 youths on the freshman quad rangle and two attempted robberies occur red during the university's second week end of violence in the fall semester vice-president of student affairs pres ton parr stated that university officials " see this as an intolerable and critical situation and we will make every effort possible to identify the individuals involv ed and take appropriate steps including possible legal action parr added that the university will co operate with bethlehem police in their investigation of the incidents and also start a campus investigation he noted that it is an obligation on the part of every student in the university to co operate with the campus police in this issue trouble first started saturday at 10:30 p.m when according to parr a gtoup of six non-university black youths accost ed a student as he returned to his rooms forum meeting there will be a forum meeting thursday at 4:10 p.m in the osbourne eioom of the university center reports will be heard from the priorities planning and resource committee the joint committee on university life and the acad emic affairs committee motions dealing with the univer sity's commitment to the south side and trustee representatives to forum committees will also be discussed payrow disappointed with monocacy decision the recent university decision to withdraw as developers of the monocacv creek area has caused considerable disappoint ment and doubt as to the university's sincerity according to bethlehem mayor gordon payrow the decision to abandon plans for the monocacy creek area was announced sept 29 in favor of building graduate and coed ucational living units in saucon valley the university said at that time that the main reason for the switch was the decision last may to go coeducational it was deemed that the monocacy creek site could not accomo date the additional housing units that coeducation will require the decision to build in saucon valley was made possibly by the acquisition of a 90-acre tract of land adjacent to the university's existing 500-acre area tl e payrow requested a meeting with university officials last friday to discuss the decision following the meeting however he said he felt that nothing had been accomplished except the restatement of the university's position and reasoning payrow said the decision will hurt bethlehem economically he cited the loss to the city of numerous prospective clients that the monocacy creek site would have provided bethlehem merchants he also cited the loss of 45,000 per year in tax ratables for the last three years that the city had lost as a result of the university's holding of the land it was also felt by payrow that the university had shown bad faith by not discussing the problem with the city prior to reach ing the decision he termed lt embarassing that they arrived at their decision without
