watchful eyes of three proctoring upperclassmen the girls pulled all of the tradi tional faux-pas of inexperienced waitresses amid the crashing of china-ware spilling of soup and elbowing of the brothers the din ner progressed from course to course the natural nervousness of the amateur-caterers was aug mented by the chatter of the bro thers and the criticism of the brown and white photo heckling sorority sisters in spite of many delays and frequent breakdowns the boys of theta delta chi did manage to get some thing to eat this slightly irregular occur rence in the regular schedule of placid fraternity life arose out of an extended initiation week of the sororities of cedar crest college at the request of some of the sis ters of pi omega the lads of theta delta chi agred to have five of the initiates serve the evening meal three proctors — ruth darlington ruth gillen and betty nelson — took over the job of arranging the fun the pledges — carol peart martha newton betty king mar garet heran and eleanor gerin her — supplied it dressed fit to kill with their hair askew and minus vital makeup the girls ran back and forth from kitchen to dining room attempting to fill the pur with the marines in china during the chino-japanese flareup in the early twenties in the center of the trouble at that time larson organized a football team to com pete against another marine team for the championship of china one of their practice sessions was interrupted by whistling shells overhead that the major very cap ably imitated with sound effects larson also told stories of sev eral navy football games that re sulted in character building and frosted windows on the trip back to annapolis with his team okeson talks on gift walter e okeson treasurer of the university explained the ad visability of the class of 1941 adopting the endowment insurance plan as the most class cement ing gift possible various ques tions regarding the plan were ans wered by albert e lee jr ch e president of the class and toastaster at the banquet okeson and larson who explained that men in service with the u s arm ed forces could have their insur ance premium payments deducted from their pay automatically and they would not feel it a vote was taken on the plan but final decision will be reserved for sev eral days e robins morgan director of placement urged each man called into the service immediately after graduation to contact him before he leaves in june so arrangements could be made to help those men obtain jobs when released from the army or navy graduation explained dean wray h congdon was called upon by toastmaster lee to explain details and events of graduation week he urged that representatives of the class see him so graduation exercises may be held on saturday afternoon in stead of on the following monday as listed in the university calen dar he also spoke on the clay pipe tradition where each senior breaks his pipe on the fellow senior near est him when his name is called in the final class roll called by the secretary of the class with final words of advice the dean urged seniors not to appear as yokels during the graduation exercises by appearing in cap and immediately after graduation to contact him before he leaves in june so arrangements could be made to help those men obtain jobs when released from the army or navy graduation explained dean wray h congdon was called upon by toastmaster lee to explain details and events of graduation week he urged that representatives of the class see him so graduation exercises may be held on saturday afternoon in stead of on the following monday as listed in the university calen dar he also spoke on the clay pipe tradition where each senior breaks his pipe on the fellow senior near est him when his name is called in the final class roll called by the secretary of the class with final words of advice the dean urged seniors not to appear as yokels during the graduation exercises by appearing in cap and gown with white and brown saddle shoes in their shirt sleeves or with a light colored coat he explained that seniors will be instructed by re gistrar george b curtis on how to conduct themselves in obtaining their diplomas so they will not look like farers from the country president greets class president clement c williams issued official greetings to the class of 41 and congratulated the class
