unrest and finance have not changed the basic direction m which the university is going said president w deming lewis m his annual report using the words of asa packer lewis described those goals as acquisition of knowledge broadening of vision and enrichment of personal life lewis stressed that the university's primary activity should be the organization preservation dissemination and creation of knowledge he warned against the providing of services which are not strictly educational especially those which would commit us as an institu tion to political or partisan causes lewis said the goal of the university should be to help people to learn to be more effective m doing all of these things and to do them ln a manner which will benefit society educationally the board of trustees has expressed its desire for the university to retain its preeminence ln engineering and the physical sciences while extending its excellence to the humanities and social sciences however lewis cited a lack of resources as an obstacle against realizing these goals for the liberal arts the same pattern has been repeated m the graduate school where problems of resources have prevented the university from developing new areas of strength the result was that lehigh was m danger of develop ing those traditional areas science and engineering even further without comparable development else where said lewis we were m danger of becoming narrower rather than broader m spite of asa packer's goals--as reaffirmed by the trustees—which required us to be concerned with broadening of vision and enrich ment of personal life lewis stated that this was the most important factor leading to the decision to become coeducational he said that the addition of women will increase resources by adding to the number of courses tn tho humanities and social sciences permitting more efficient operation and enriched programs in those areas lewis added that the presence of women on campus should result ln a substantial increase ln the number of male applicants this would help to strengthen the university's largest area approximately 60 percent of financial support tuition that reinforcement may be of vital importance to us during the coming years if we are to continue our progress and remain solvent m the face of considerable financial stress he said lewis characterized the financial problem as of campus violence and the motiva tions behind this militancy there has been an almost continuous conflict between the majority and the minority of the population he said adding that only recently has this conflict begun to take the form of a non-violent civil-rights movement m ireland horgan explained that the resentment caused by discrimination has acted as a unifying force for the discriminated
