lafayette a 31-28 victory before 17,000 screaming fans m fisher field m what must go down as one of the classic struggles tn this long and hard-fought rivalry the win broke a two year lehigh winning streak and gave the leopards a winning season at 6-5 lehigh's final record stands at 4-6 nowell's kick negated a courageous comeback by the engineers who wiped out leopard leads of 21-0 and 28-14 the engineers electrified the crowd with two touch downs m the space of 12 seconds ln the final quarter to tie the score the first came on a play which coach fred dunlap installed just for the lafayette game jack paget took a pitchout from gerry berger and fired an option pass long downfleld the play had failed once earlier ln the game but this time split and bill howard had far outraced the defense he gathered m the toss and completed the 54 yard pass play with 11:28 left ln the fourth period the reception was only howard's fourth this season but his third td catch ron schattenberg converted the extra point and then boomed a kickoff which gave lafayette poor field position at their own 22 on the first play from scrimmage leopard qb rich mckay tried a short sideline pass a play which had worked success fully earlier m the game this time however mckay hung the ball and gary schelb picked off he pass the fleet-footed engineer halfback scooted 24 yards untouched b&w photo by doster lehigh's don diorio cuts outside of block thrown by fullback jack rizzo 45 looking on is quarterback jerry berger 17 despite a diorio third quar ter jaunt of 57 yards which began the engineer's courageous comback lehigh fell to archrival lafayette 31 28 past director of u athletics is dead at 78 gen percy l sadler director of athletics here for 16 years died friday m st luke's hospital he was 78 sadler had a long history of athletic leadership both at the university and nationally he served as the university's athletic director and director of physical education from 1946-1962 when he handed the reigns to william leckonby he also served two terms as secretary treasurer of the national collegiate assn sadler was particularly interested m wrestling a member of the olympic wrestling committee the pan american wrestling committee and the president of the eastern intercollegiate wrestling assn sadler was one of the most in fluential men m the sport sadler also served as president of the eastern intercollegiate football assn m 1956 and as president of the eastern college athletic conference m 1955 he was also a lehigh valley charter mem ber of the national football hall of fame sadler graduated from the university of alabama after which he entered the army as a private m 1916 commissioned a second lieutenant m sound system troubles mar a fine procol harum concert by mark russell saturday night at grace hall procol harum gave a really good concert there was only one drawback the sound system and that was not the group's fault there has been great discussion as to whether the departure of matthew fisher has hurt the group to any extent my personal feeling is that procol harum has moved on to a different plane m their musical development the bach oiiented organ has gone and has been replaced more amply by robin trower's guitar trower's guitar work m the concert was really tremendous and left no doubt m one's mind as to whether fisher's departure had hurt the group fisher's organ tended to keep the guitar m the background but with fisher's departure trower's guitar work has really blossomed fisher's replacement chris copping was not " picked up to fill a missing place but rather was found and then fisher left copping*s bass and organ work was very clean and not at all ostentatious his style complements brooker's and trower's to the utmost because of the sound system brooker's voice was not always heard as well as it should have been the same was true of his piano however m a number of songs such as the devil cake from kansas and the haunt ngly beautiful homborg which i don't think was given the recognition it deserved procol harum said that they preferred doing concerts on this side of the atlantic rather than m england gary brooker gave an interesting reason for this he said " people ln this country know our music m england they just don't know our songs except for a whiter shade of pale and homburg besides the lousy sound system which wasn't their fault one really cannot criticize the concert ln any way b.j wilson's drumming was as always perfect it was very tasteful yet when lt was necessary it was as powerful as anything this side of keith moon for some reason unknown to me the audience didn't seem to be wild over the concert when gary brooker began the encore with great balls of fire however the audience lept to their feet and stayed there until procol harum left the stage for the last time it seems to me that the university is just not a concert school people here don't really appreciate music granted the concert committee may have broken even on this show but a good number of the people at that concert went only be baw photo by camana a disturbance at emery house saturday night marred lafayette weekend acti vities fights broke out between town youths and university students m tke disorders windows were smashed by the town youths et tke university newer plant thornburg house end emery house students town youths clash at open house the lafayette weekend partying was disturbed saturday night when disorders broke out at an emery house yjarty according to police and student reports no one was injured seriously to require medical attention the party was an open house sponsored by emery congdon and leavitt houses according to one university official the open house is usually onlyextendedto the university community and does not include outsiders the disturbances broke out shortly before midnight when a group of puerto rican and black youths apparently from bethlehem attempted to enter the emery party the youths were asked to leave either at the door or once they had entered the party according to assistant dean of residence robert shurtleff there was not a great deal of actual fighting or fisticuffs between the students and the town youths instead there just seemed to be a lot of antagonism on the part of the town youths at having been asked to leave the party most of this antagonism took the form of a small amount of window breaking according to police reports officers had been called up to emery several times during the night to investigate complaints when they were called to investigate the report of the disturbances before midnight the rear window of one police car was completely smashed by a concrete block thrown at them by one of the youths some dents were also put m the side of the car at this time they were forced to call m more reinforcements m order to quell the disturbance however despite the pro vocation the police did not retaliate with the use of any force and no one was arrest ed two picture windows at thornburg house and one small window at emery were broken some damage was also done to the physics building and the university power plant
