the agent who will ad dress the sophomores will be as signed by j f sears special agent in charge of the f b i office at philadelphia according to harry w olinsky bus 43 chairman of the commit tee an invitation was extended to j edgar hoover head of the f b i but he was unable to attend in communications to the committee hoover said that although he ap preciated the invitation to deliver an several of the odk committees functioning this year will be discussed simonsen has a five semester average of 3.34 and received a wilbur freshman mathematics prize he is a member of phi eta sigma pi mu epsilon and cya nide last spring he was appoint ed a junior editor of the epitome and he has served as an elected representative to the interfrater nity council active in soccer for three years he has won his numer als and varsity letter active in publications smith has a five semester aver age of 2.92 he is a member of pi delta epsilon and served as finan cial manager and was advertising game will be on sale at the arcadia office supply bureau the gym and by club members next week special tick ets for couples will sell for 4 and single tickets for 2.25 one hour of free skating will follow the contest arrangements have been made with the railroad company to leave one hour after the end of the game the train will leave easton with a large lafayette delegation at 5:30 p m and is scheduled to leave the jersey central station in bethle her at 6 p m the train will arrive at hershey at 8 o'clock one half-hour before game time alumni are being contacted in bethlehem reading and harris burg with the hope that these groups will again attend the game a new special air-conditioned car is to be provided for the facul ty and their guests refreshments will be sold on the train arrangements to send its band to add to the festivities the hershey arena is the largest structure of its type in the united states and offers space enough to accommodate the huge crowd ex peted at the game the game at hershey last year was won by lafayette but the en gineers hope to win this contest lehigh has already defeated la fayette in an epihl game this year at philadelphia however the hershey game will be a non-league affair the series between lehigh and lafayette now stands at 3 for the leopards and 2 for the brown and white if lehigh wins this game the series will be even in conjunction with the defense program the x-ray division of the chemistry department is examin ing cartridges made by the frank ford arsenal of philadelphia ac cording to harold v anderson as sociate professor of chemistry the cracking of brass cartridges pre sents a serious problem to the army over a period of several months the brass shells develop slight crackings which make the shells practically useless and cost the army thosuands of dollars every year the frankford arsenal makes many sizes of shells and maintains its own x-ray laboratory to in spect munitions the local depart ment headed by anderson handles the overflow the philadelphia ar senal sends cartridges in various stages of processing to the local laboratory with the use of the x-ray diff ractive method the cartridges are examined for flaws in composition a special technique arranged in conjunction with the arsenal is involved the work started about two months ago and will continue with the present defense program assisting anderson is benjamin k daubenspeck the william l heim research fellow in advanced x-ray spectroscopy daubenspeck will receive his m s in chemistry this spring he has accepted a po sition with the remington arms company where he will work in a newly constructed plant devoted to the production of munitions petitions to form a lehigh uni versity varsity l club and a organize all letter men all undergraduate holders of varsity letters in recognized sports would be eligible to become active members of the varsity l club associate memberships will con sist of all improvement of athletics at le high the club will attempt to stimu late and strengthen all forms of undergraduate interest and parti cipation in athletics by example and information the petition de department of fine arts drawings and paintings submit ted by students in the seven par ticipating schools will be on pub lic exhibition in the art gallery in the university library from march 1 to 21 the entries will be judged on wednesday morning feb 26 and announcement of awards made on the morning of saturday march 1 the schools which expect to sub mit entries according to reports from the respective principals and art teachers are the following liberty high fountain hill slat ington bangor south whitehall wilson boro and nazareth three first prizes of 10 each and three second prizes of 5 each are being offered by the university in order that the competitors may be judged on a fair basis one first prize and one second prize will be offered in each of the three groups of high schools second class dis tricts third class and fourth class drawings or paintings in any medium are eligible as well as block prints and etchings profes sor howland announced work may be done from objects or subject of a talk by william t staats 18 assistant to the chairman of the pennsylvania turnpike commission monday night in packard laboratory speaking to the engineers club of the lehigh valley staats will cov er the engineering features of the dream highway illustrating his talk with motion pictures staats will sketch the engineer ing difficulties that had to be over come in the construction of the turnpike he will show the out standing construction feats requir ed of the highway's engineers by means of a motion picture as technical adviser to the chair man of the commission and liason between the consulting engineers and federal agencies staats handles all activities of field office finanace and administration for the highway from foot to horse to motorcycle to auto is saga of campus cop approximately 212 men took advantage of the typhoid inocula tion service offered by the dispen sary last saturday according to dr raymond c bull director of the student's health service of these 212 men 36 were in oculated for r o t c camp 51 were senior volunteers 28 were freshmen volunteers and 97 were men who expect to attend the sum mer surveying camp last satur day was the first day of the pres ent series and all men who were inoculated at that time must re port for further injections the fol lowing two saturdays the first formal initiation to be held by tone musical society will take place at 7:30 p m feb 28 in the chapel when 13 new members are inducted into the society the initiation of a musical na ture is being planned by a com mittee consisting of david rich ards arts 42 president of tone forrest mann arts 43 and robert k beckwith ch e 43 cancellation of the proposed trip to the metropolitan opera has been announced by the committee in charge of the trip inability to procure seats within a reasonable price range was stated as the cause for the cancellation beckwith lectured at a meeting of tone last friday evening in packer chapel on the subject of wagner's tristan and isolde he traced the legendary tragic love of tristan and isolde from its birth in irish folklore to the motivation that caused wagner to compose his greatest musical drama a lot of outside thugs evi dently know that fraternity hous es are easy to loot and periodic robbings have occurred on the campus at definite intervals 1939 robberies biggest about the biggest series of fra ternity robberies that officer ma lone can remember occurred in 19 39 when every house on the cam pus was looted they all locked their doors tightly after that he commented but after a few months the fellows began to forget about it and leave the doors un locked again and the robberies started all over malone says that these robbing cycles occur at in tervals of about four or five months we are just about due for another right now he said another major series of thefts occurred in 1929 when about 300 overcoats were stolen from the li brary and other buildings about the campus by an organized gang from allentown this overcoat racket was finally broken up by 16 pinkerton detectives who were stationed at various places through out the campus traffic more accute since the depression the traffic problem on the campus has become ! a little more acute it was back in ! 1915 that joe lehigh first buzzed into south bethlehem with the lat est maxwell and stanley steamer by l e klein there used to be a stable where richards house is now a stable where the university kept its horse that was back in 1925 be fore the campus police force putted about on motorcycles or cruised in automobiles and before the university inves ted in the horse the campus cops had to get around on foot thus the job of keeping law and order at lehigh has progressed consider ably through the years back in 1921 and 1922 there was one po liceman on the grounds he walked then in 1925 the university bought a black horse named prince and in 1929 the first motorcycle ap peared after using up three motorcy cles the university finally bought the gray coupa last march that is used now by the four members of the force thomas malone harry kace samuel peters and roland bauer prince in retirement according to officer malone prince was three years old when the university bought him and was a spirited animal and he still is officer malone mused in an inter view monday he's living the life of reiley now over in saucon park he belongs to the bethlehem police force and they still use him for special occasions like parades policing the campus is much the same now as it always has been the force never has had much i trouble with the students it has al officer samuel peters of the campus police force sits back in the force's gray coupe rests his elbow on the window and calmly surveys the campus cop approximately 212 men took advantage of the typhoid inocula tion service offered by the dispen sary last saturday according to dr raymond c bull director of the student's health service of these 212 men 36 were in oculated for r o t c camp 51 were senior volunteers 28 were freshmen volunteers and 97 were men who expect to attend the sum mer surveying camp last satur day was the first day of the pres ent series and all men who were inoculated at that time must re port for further injections the fol lowing two saturdays the first formal initiation to be held by tone musical society will take place at 7:30 p m feb 28 in the chapel when 13 new members are inducted into the society the initiation of a musical na ture is being planned by a com mittee consisting of david rich ards arts 42 president of tone forrest mann arts 43 and robert k beckwith ch e 43 cancellation of the proposed trip to the metropolitan opera has been announced by the committee in charge of the trip a lot of outside thugs evi dently know that fraternity hous es are easy to loot and periodic robbings have occurred on the campus at definite intervals 1939 robberies biggest about the biggest series of fra ternity robberies that officer ma lone can remember occurred in 19 39 when every house on the cam pus was looted they all locked their doors tightly after that he commented but after a few months the fellows began to forget about it and leave the doors un locked again and the robberies started all over malone says that these robbing cycles occur at in tervals of about four or five months we are just about due for another right now he said another major series of thefts occurred in 1929 when about 300 overcoats were stolen from the li brary and other buildings about the campus by an organized gang from allentown this overcoat racket was finally broken up by 16 pinkerton detectives who were stationed at various places through out the campus traffic more accute since the depression the traffic problem on the campus has become ! a little more acute it was back in ! 1915 that joe lehigh first buzzed into south bethlehem with the lat est maxwell and stanley steamer by l e klein there used to be a stable where richards house is now a stable where the university kept its horse that was back in 1925 be fore the campus police force putted about on motorcycles or cruised in automobiles and before the university inves ted in the horse the campus cops had to get around on foot thus the job of keeping law and order at lehigh has progressed consider ably through the years back in 1921 and 1922 there was one po liceman on the grounds he walked then in 1925 the university bought a black horse named prince and in 1929 the first motorcycle ap peared after using up three motorcy cles the university finally bought the gray coupa last march that is used now by the four members of the force thomas malone harry kace samuel peters and roland bauer prince in retirement according to officer malone prince was three years old when the university bought him and was a spirited animal and he still is officer malone mused in an inter view monday he's living the life of reiley now over in saucon park he belongs to the bethlehem police force and they still use him for special occasions like parades policing the campus is much the same now as it always has been the force never has had much i trouble with the students it has al officer samuel peters of the campus police force sits back in the force's gray coupe rests his elbow on the window and calmly surveys the
