series first speaker samuelson will speak on what now for the new economics at h;3o p.m on thursday feb 2t the lecture will he held in grace hall and will lie open to the public without charge samuelson is scheduled for a press conference at the university earlier the same day samuelson's talk will climax a special economics week at t tie university which will have a series of seminars workshops and panel discussions featuring speeches and will be sponsored by the economics department besides l>eing a member of the faculty of the massachusetts institute of technology samuelson is a consultant to the rand corporation the u.s treasury the council of economic advisors and the federal reserve board this annual lecture series on the american economic system has been established at the university by a gift from mr and mrs phillip i berman of allentown univer sity president w deming i,ewis called the new series " in i mportant addition to the other distinguished endowed programs annually presented at lehigh the berman series will annually bring economists of international standing to the university for a day of activities ending with an evening lecture its major purposes will be the improvement of the understanding of the american economy and an exam ination of the role plaved by economic forces in the problems facing society it is hoped by berman that the series will suggest some solutions to these profile ms berman was awarded a degree of doctor of humane letters bv the university in 19g9 dr paul samuelson mr phillip i berman forum report will review past semester the lehigh university forum will hold its first open meeting of the spring semester thursday feb 11 in grace hall for all members of the university community and for all interested members of the surrounding communities at the 4 p.m meeting dr ferdinand p beer forum chairman will report on the legislative body's accomplishments to date chairmen of each of the forum's five standing committees will make brief reports on their activities and respond to questions from the floor the forum constitution provides for such a meeting to tie held at least once a semester to enable the assembly to report on and evaluate its operation structure and actions the forum will hold its regular monthly meeting on monday feb is at 7;30 p.m in whitaker laboratory auditorium rotc talks to concern today's world a new series of talks on current world problems sponsored by the university rotc detachment and featuring noted authorities in various fields will be launched on thursday feb 18 the proposed six-lecture series extend ing into may is presented bv the depart ment of military science and aerospace studies through the facilities of the na tional strategy information center inc it is one phase of an academic enrichment program made available to rotc detach ments by the center the talks which are open to the public free of charge will tie presented at 7 p.m on various weekday evenings in whitaker laboratory auditorium fach presentation will last approximately 50 minutes and will be followed by aquestion and-answer period first speaker in the series is peter r roux of columbia university whose topic will be communist china military capability and political strategy future topics will tie on the soviet union nato and the changing balance of power in europe the problems and opportunities in latin america the power came in the middle fast and ethics war and arms control dates and speakers will be announced later heated debates led by prof joseph mcfadden questioning the economic feasibility of several forum proposals was one of the many aspects which con cerned the new legislative body last year u finances and other issues will be discussed in the february 1 1 open meeting vending machine vandals cost rhc members 600 by jeff balsai according to the coca-cola man who services the vending machines in the university's residence halls there's not an honest guy at lehigh anymore while this statement is open to debate what prompted it is clear -- there has been over 600 worth of damage to residence halls vending machines to date according to ravmond j sims residence halls concessions business manager neither residence halls council rhc nor the university own any of the vending machines but we are liable to the company for a percentage of the damages increased vandalism threatens vending privileges and the continued financial solvency of rhc sims said that the monev earned through concessions goes back to students roger bast assistant manager explained that the money for this year's net rhc operating budget of 10,000 the 4,000 for this year's rhc social functions four direct rhc scholarships one each for a freshman sophmore junior and senior in the residence lialls and the residence halls tv sets and cable services is contributed bv concessions both sims and bast emphasized that these totals do not include payrolls for such people as linen agents laundry agents and others the payroll is a totally separate way that concessions pays dividends to students and damages make it a problem to meet these payrolls seventy people profit directly according to rick whiffen rhc president vending machines contribute one-third of rhc's income the person vou are hurting is yourself whiffen said of anyone vandalizing a vending machine he stressed that verv little money is ever in the machines since thev are emptied dailv if you get bad focxl or lose monev in a machine ro to see the student in each section responsible for refunding money said whiffen he explained that these people are paid to give the monev back without an argument and stressed that thev should be consulted instead of vandalizing the machine sims said that if the person in a section cannot be reached either he or bast should be contacted at rgfi-0893 whiffen explained that there is a f>o reward for information leading to disciplinary action or arrest of vandals tvpieal penalties he said are three university demerits plus full payment of damages plus payment of the reward whiffen emphasized that the university has the onlv student-run
