brown and white 866-0331 vol 82 no 27 bethlehem pa friday february 12 1971 senior gift campaign seeks 93,000 goal the senior class gift campaign was kicked off last monday night with a dinner at the hotel bethlehem for the solicitors of what has been termed the super class gift the class of 19t)1 has made the present senior class an offer which is unique in the history of class gifts at lehigh if the class of 1971 pledges an amount which is double the value of the matured gift of the class of 1951 the allocation of that gift will be the privilege of this year's senior class thus tlte selling point for contributing to this year's senior class gift is that by contributing a senior will be able to voice his opinion on where the accrued value of the class n 19"l\s class gift should be spent the present value of the 1951 class gift is approximately 93,000 kach member ol this war's senior class is being asked to pledge 2n a year lor 20 ears it each member of the class does this the class will be way over their goal of s 93,000 chairman of the senior class gift committee lee hilton said that the class needs approximately 3<o pledges to make its goal ol 93,000 this is just a little more than 0 percent of the g7o seniors that will be graduating in june the campaign will end this friday at which tune hilton hopes that everv senior was contacted bv one of the go solicitors working on the class gift there will be a dean-up later in the spring of this vear retraction trafficking in dangerous drugs as was reported on the first page of the feb 9th edition of the brown and white he was charged with possession of dangerous drugs job opportunities scarce for graduating seniors by steve glickstein you i'o to lehigh right so when you graduate with vour engineering degree vou should ha\e no trouble finding that ideal job which offers vou advancement possibilities u'ood location and l',ooo i ear right wrong and if vou 1 re a senior this sear on're finding out the i oiiomic facts f mfv thp hard wa throughout be cotinirv the class of 1971 is finding it increasingly difficult to obtain jobs at city college of new i ork for example ml live jobs had been offered to janu a r \ engineerine graduates compared with 170 last vear and 404 in jan 1969 at stevens institute of technology tho number of companies recruiting dropped b nearly r>o-percent at lehigh the problem is not nearly so acute although no precise statistics are available comparing this \ ear's number of jobs offered to last university placement i 1 rector fvprett teal sees a substantial decrease mi job offerings i've been at it for 20-vears said teal and this is the tightest labor market i've seen since 19f>0 company cancellations have run 23 percent here nine percent higher than list ear hut well under the national ■icrate in the hiu'h employment years uf 19gg-09 cancellations amounted to onlv 2 r . percent whv has the market tightened so sub iladtiahv there are two basir reasons ii s ) the nationally economic recession and ( 2ti the oversupplv ol college graduates the recession has caused a general belt tightening in most companies mack rucks of allentown for example has not oniv stopped recruiting college tad uates of any kind but is firing the excess baggage to cut expenses bethlehem steel a traditionally high employer of lehigh men has cut its requirements in t)0 per'-ent while thp economic recession has caused short term cut-backs uie over supply of college graduates will have more far-reaching effects there are simply too many ollege-edu ated people to fill the jobs at our present technological level because of this assistant placement director fisher predicts over the next ten years an annual surplus of 2-3 million graduates won't find the kind of work they want the first vear out of school contrary to popular opinion engineers have not been hit particularly hard bv the job squeeze as a matter of fact inaiiv arts and business jobs considered western electric allentown works for example has not hired any non-engineers since dec 1969 with the job market so tight president of the senior class john scott 111 and lee hilton 71 chairman of senior class gift cam dr charles b sclar and dr joseph i goldstein have been principal in vestigators in the national aeronautics and space administration's nasa sample analysis program since the return of the apollo 11 in 1969 the purpose of the program is to analyze moon rock samples brought back by the apollo astronauts sclar a professor of geology studied his samples for evidence that shock waves from meteoric impact once passed through them according to sclar these collisions of meteors and meteorites with the moon created shock w^ves which left a mechanical imprint in the moon samples these imprints appear in the form of fracture patterns and thermal imprints such as shock-produced melts elements melted and recooled forming a kind of glass and recrystalization textures see teal page 4 see new
