saturday cornelius is grandfather william a cornelius 89 secre tary in charge of the committee for the celebration of the 75th anni versary of lehigh's founding is a grandfather again a son robert comley cornelius iv was born on feb 6 at st luke's hospital to the wife of robert c cornelius iii 29 er than in 1940 and a tendency seems to prevail for seniors to ac cept positions rather than plan to do graduate work as usual the placement director says visiting personnel men are much interested in the extra-cur ricular activities of the seniors this is especially true of those companies which seek a small number of high grade men as in the past some interviewers are insisting that students they ac cept have earned some part of their college expenses the large companies are recruit ing seniors who have had no ex perience because the companies want to train them in their partic ular methods no attempt is being made to dip below the senior class or into the graduate field for men the demand is for full-time men rather than for part time men for seasonal employment companies which have training courses prefer seniors to men who have graduated they wish to take those who are pliable and have not learned the methods used by other companies demands by industry are heav iest in the fields of chemical me chanical industrial and metallur gical engineering but students in other engineering curricula and in the colleges of business adminis tration and arts and science are also being placed at a fairly steady pace the request for business ad ministration seniors is greater than at any time in recent years lehigh seniors are being sought more eagerly this year by business and industry than ever before it is indicated in a report by e rob ins morgan director of the place ment bureau as of february 1 a total of 83 men had accepted positions effec tive upon graduation in june this compares with 46 on the same date last year 19 in 1939 36 in 1937 and 16 in 1936 mr morgan already lists more than 400 interviews for february which representatives of 21 com panies will hold with approximate ly 250 seniors who are still unsign ed prior to feb 1 30 companies had interviewed men by the same date last year only 11 companies had conducted interviews the explanation of the rush for college seniors mr morgan says lies in the improved business now prevailing it is not only the prim ary defense industries which are doing the rushing at lehigh how ever for mr morgan says firms other than defense industries are also getting the jump by selecting men in many instances before they are taken by the first-line de fense companies with some companies the claims which the selective service act has on seniors is no bar to employ ment the placement director says many firms are willing to take a chance and offer guarantees of a furlough some do not even inquire about the students draft numbers starting wages generally off ered are about five per cent high eight lehigh students were wit nesses for the state at a hearing of the pennsylvania state liquor control board held on tuesday in allentown the lehigh men testi fied in a case involving bucky mc ginley manager of by an attempt to resell them through the arcadia office fell through as only two tickets were reported sold at the office yesterday afternoon it is evident that many non-fra ternity men will attend the frater nity function tomorrow night at reduced prices although 70 tickets were turned in at drown hall many sales have been made in the dormitories and in the town living groups quoted prices range from 1 to 2.50 in comparison with the original 3.30 according to inter-fraternity ball committee plans all men who wanted to resell tickets were given the privilege of letting the arcadia office handle the sale at the origin al price fear of competition how ever led to individual transactions and the drown hall sales did not materialize as devised since all fraternity men are re quired to buy comley cornelius iv was born on feb 6 at st luke's hospital to the wife of robert c cornelius iii 29 er than in 1940 and a tendency seems to prevail for seniors to ac cept positions rather than plan to do graduate work as usual the placement director says visiting personnel men are much interested in the extra-cur ricular activities of the seniors this is especially true of those companies which seek a small number of high grade men as in the past some interviewers are insisting that students they ac cept have earned some part of their college expenses the large companies are recruit ing seniors who have had no ex perience because the companies want to train them in their partic ular methods no attempt is being made to dip below the senior class or into the graduate field for men the demand is for full-time men rather than for part time men for seasonal employment companies which have training courses prefer seniors to men who have graduated they wish to take those who are pliable and have not learned the methods used by other companies demands by industry are heav iest in the fields of chemical me chanical industrial and metallur gical engineering but students in other engineering curricula and in the colleges of business adminis tration and arts and science are also being placed at a fairly steady pace the request for business ad ministration seniors is greater than at any time in recent years lehigh seniors are being sought more eagerly this year by business and industry than ever before it is indicated in a report by e rob ins morgan director of the place ment bureau as of february 1 a total of 83 men had accepted positions effec tive upon graduation in june this compares with 46 on the same date last year 19 in 1939 36 in 1937 and 16 in 1936 mr morgan already lists more than 400 interviews for february which representatives of 21 com panies will hold with approximate ly 250 seniors who are still unsign ed prior to feb 1 30 companies had interviewed men by the same date last year only 11 companies had conducted interviews the explanation of the rush for college seniors mr morgan says lies in the improved business now prevailing it is not only the prim ary defense industries which are doing the rushing at lehigh how ever for mr morgan says firms other than defense industries are also getting the jump by selecting men in many instances before they are taken by the first-line de fense companies with some companies the claims which the selective service act has on seniors is no bar to employ ment the placement director says many firms are willing to take a chance and offer guarantees of a furlough some do not even inquire about the students draft numbers starting wages generally off ered are about five per cent high eight lehigh feb 24 c h weikel manager of commer cial research development at beth lehem steel company will speak on market research in an open meeting plans to maintain the price of inter-fraternity ball tickets by an attempt to resell them through the arcadia office fell through as only two tickets were reported sold at the office yesterday afternoon it is evident that many non-fra ternity men will attend the frater nity function tomorrow night at reduced prices although 70 tickets were turned in at drown hall many sales have been made in the dormitories and in the town living groups quoted prices range from 1 to 2.50 in comparison with the original 3.30 according to inter-fraternity ball committee plans all men who wanted to resell tickets were given the privilege of letting the arcadia office handle the sale at the origin al price fear of competition how ever led to individual transactions and the drown hall sales did not materialize as devised since all fraternity men are re quired to buy tickets many are burdened with tickets that they can not use in previous years the rush to make a sale forced low prices dwindling to free donations as the ball approached the com mittee had planned
