quirement m the college of arts and science was defeated e-terdav afternoon by the arts college forum the proposal was lost by a 21-47 vote discussion on a se n proposal to reduce the present requirement to sec ond year proficient 1 \ m a language was deferred until the next arts forum meeting next thursda . the curriculum change as proposed yesterday would have substituted non-u s < ulturo courses for the present language courses six semester hours m the culture cir cultures of a geographical region other than the u.s or f.ngland would have met the requirements if it had been passed numerous arguments were put forth at the meeting m favor of keeping the laniruage requirement it was stated that the language requirement is a basic part of a student's education and helps to mold a better liberal man it was also noted that the non-u s culture courses that would replace the language require ment are presenth offerred at the l t niversit and open to all students those who spoke against the require ment acknowledged the . alue of language but felt that because of the diverse interests of the students it was unfair to require the course in addition it was commented that u»e argument that the language makes the student a better man could be advanced by any department m the college in order to make their courses requi red other at tlon at the meeting n luded a report on hie new bachelor of liberal studies degree that was passed last week by the forum dean of the college vv ross yates stated that m its present form the new degree had little eltance of passing the fdpoi committee the faculty and the board of trustees yates noted that there were two main criticisms of the new decree first and most important he reported that there was a feeling that the bls curriculum would be a heap program the general feeling was that because the program had no requirements other than two semesters of freshman english there would be no quality controls on the program the second objection noted was that the new degree was actually just an unnecessary additional degree for the university to offer yates attempted to refute the argument that a student who wished to could take all gut courses and graduate without taking anything more than freshman or sophomore level courses he noted that there were not that many gut or lower level courses available for a student to take an easy program and these are open to a ba major also he added that most students would take a major under the bls program and they would work with faculty advisors prof william shade chairman of arts college forum exams grades new courses studied by forum committee by george mccormick the academic affairs committee of the forum met wednes day and discussed freshman exam schedules a proposal to change the grading system and the possibility of adding some new courses on freshman exam schedules rich carten 72 a gryphon said that his subcommittee was still trying to obtain data on the issue but that wagner was almost passive on the issue the main complain was that wagner couldn't say how many freshmen were m which courses the subcommittee will submit a report m two weeks the saturday lass committee has worded a questionnaire directed towards students to try to find out if wednesday night classes are more acceptable to students than saturday morning classes the questionnaire will be out next week and hopefully return ed m time for analysis before april's forum meeting the committee then discussed a letter written by professor j mcfadden of the division of journalism about the grading system the letter suggested that grades be reported m pluses or minuses as it is done at boston university dr wensel however said that no one could tell grades that closely but phil hunt 72 countered by stating that a tear her could still give grades m the present manner if he wanted to a subcom mittee of professor ryan and phil hunt was assigned to study the problem charles unseld 71 suggested that the committee consider the possibility of adding health courses to the curriculum the proposed courses would be sex education family planning public health personal hygiene and nutrition the question arose as to whether the biology department or the health service should teach the courses and someone suggested that the health service be further incorporated into the university to improve conditions here bill alpert was not m favor of adding these courses because they would run into more money better spent m other areas a report will be submitted at the next meeting by unseld john fields spoke of the issue of students teaching courses and bill alpert said that at tufts university about 2t courses were now being taught by students half of which are freshman courses at tufts he continued there is aboard which governs the program and a faculty advisor for each student teacher the subcommittee concerned with this issue had a luncheon meeting recently consisting of dr molsburger dr christ dean w ross yates gordon lightfoot gains new fans in grace hall by mark russell monday evening gordon lightfoot performed m grace hall i was not one of his fans at the outset but i was quickly converted lightfoot has a sweet voice that goes very well with his songs i had not heard many of his songs before -- the ones i knew i had not originally credited to lightfoot -- bobby magee among others it is very hard to say which were my favorite songs of the evening the second song he performed was really excellent i don't know the title but the lyrics struck me so much that i wrote down some of them . . their mothers made the uniforms to show which side they were on . ." lightfoot had a problem with one of his finger nails which he had broken earlier m the day this hurt his picking style causing him to give up m the middle of a very beautiful song again one that i didn't know the title but liked enough to copy down the opening line . . the perfume she wore was from a shop on the down-side of town . ." i must admit that his rendition of the dylan song girl from the north-country fair was not my cup of tea but his new song young miguel was tremendous all of llghtfoot's songs have a certain understanding quality about them gordon lightfoot was backed by a bassist named havnes along with red smith his guitarist who impressed a great deal together these three high priority does the jewish community center on brod head avenue and packer avenue loom big m the university's long range plans that question will be answered by the forum priorities planning & resources committee which is currently discussing the possibility of buying the fire-torn building lightfoot concert nearly disrupted by bomb scare bethlehem police received a call around 7 p.m the night of the gordon lightfoot concert stating that a bomb had been placed m grace hall according to concert chairman andy bresler 72 bresler stated that after the call had been received no one was allowed to leave or enter the building until police officials searched grace hall after a 20-minute search no bomb had been found and a decision was made to go ahead with the concert bresler said that the decision was made after obtaining the consent of gordon lightfoot concert promoter tom cccole and professor h barret davis according to bresler there were high-level university officials at the concert bresler said we decided that we would tell everyone at the concert about the bomb threat and give them the opportunity to leave and obtain a refund if they desired however when the announcement was made no one left the concert bresler stated that the bomb threat hassled lightfoot and was responsible for the performance ending with no encore numbers bresler added that a suspect for the crank phone call is currently being held by the bethlehem police department and that no bomb to this date has been found m grace hall see lightfoot
