it had inadequate spare for looks it was cramped and was vulnerable to shoplifters this time this vear lehigh has the largest bookstore in the lehigh vallev -- it has vast hook space it is roomv and its layout makes it i tn onvenient for shoplifters robert bell the bookstore's manager is verv happ with the change in the move's favor he savs are the larger facility which makes things easier to buy he's expanded the clothing offeree the card department and paperbacks offered have none from under 2,000 to f>,ooo and we hope to go to 10,000 also a student charge system has een instituted which was not possible before these advantages are needed to offset the in convenience caused students by the move to maginnes hall located at the lower border of the campus these two advantages should help us overcome being awav from the main-stream of ttie campus re 11 wishes the post-office and the snack bar could have come with us but he now sees the move's advantages a little more than compensating for its inconvenient location the bookstore's march sales thus far are ahead of last vear's pace but it's impossible to judge the move this early on a dollar-and-cents basis re 11 savs another new feature of the expanded bookstore is a record department from a dollar point of view says bell he's somewhat disappointed but he's selling from 200 to 300 a week one problem is competition from town record shops who sell their records somewhat cheaper but with the college service agency from which rell orders his records he can't affort to lower his prices tlie newly instituted charge system has received an excellent response the students asked for it rell remarks as one of the pre-requisites of a new bookstore the expanded facilities made the innovation possible apparently the students are taking to the svstem responsibly -- we expected them to pay and they lived up to it the possibility of more student help has been suggested many times but bell has riad bad experiences with it in the past several years ago an attempt was made to use student help he pointed out but when exam time or something special comes up problems are created the student has tests to studv for and that has to come first at such times tlie bookstore is left with inadequate help also student help costs more than full-time help during the rush week after semester break students were used in the store to help handle the flow and there are two bovsinthe back room now who will continue as long as things work out as they have thus far shoplifting was a very erv difficult problem in the old bookstore the old place had extremely high shelving admits rell for the one-percent of the population which does shoplift the old store had accessibility down here savs rell i don't believe it's a major problem the layout of the store makes shoplifting very difficult rell is vehement about one thing i won't put mirrors up to make the 99-percent feel that they're stealing when it's a total wreck the priorities planning and resources committee has determined that the chan dler lab is totally inadequate h&w photo by hai.sai the new bookstore is more spacious better stocked and most important more lucrative than the old one new chemistry laboratory gets tentative a priority by dave morrison wr're trying to come up with a program that paulfranz vice president of development can sell he's going to try to raise r million for the university in the 1970'5 said prof thomas jackson chairman of the forum priorities planning and resources committee at its weekly meeting thursday franz has been working with the committee to arrive at a list of priorities for the building and renovation of campus facilities during the next ten years the tentative priorities set up in thursday's meeting for academic buildings only are a new chemistry building a packard lab auditorium a packard lab roof repair b business and economics wing b school of education b physics building renovation b packard lab renovation b chandler chem building renovation c research laboratory c parking facilities etc these priorities are of course subject to change the development office will try to raise money for high priority projects first however if an alumnus were to give the university 5 million tomorrow for a research lab its priority would no doubt move from c to a the question of improving the lot of the physics dept was discussed in the meeting the physics lab has rather elderly antiquated facilities additional office and research space and a new lecture room are needed the whole question was - should the physics dept press for immediate renova tion and an addition or wait and get a new building some committee members such as robert grzywacz 72 thinks that present renovation prejudices the chances of getting a new building in the future prof alan stenning came up with a possible solution why not move the non-experimental sciences which would have moved to chandler when chemistry moved out to the physics building and tear chandler down said stenning the money saved by not renovating chandler would be spent on a new physics building it was further pointed out that fixed equipment and special construction in the present physics bldg is minimal it could be easily converted to a math building this possibility was to be discussed with franz at a later date discipline policy called consistent by dean brennan they take each case as it comes along said dean charles w brennan in reference to the university's discipline structure and weigh it on its own merits brennan said that the university has no set guidelines that tell tlie discipline committee what to do with an individual case therefore the university does not rate either academic or non-academic dishonesty as a greater offense than the other brennan rioted that those students who are brought before the discipline committee generally accept the decision that the committee reaches the dean said that while the students mav not be happy or contented with tlie decision they are generally satisfied enough not to appeal the com mittee's verdict the dean explained the procedure for appealing a discipline committee decision first the student has to write a letter to the secretary of the faculty explaining the case the faculty secretary then discusses the situation with president w seo new guidelines page 4 see new bookstore page 4
