lehigh university brown and white vbi 79 - ho 3 bethlehem pa - friday september 29 1967 8660331 rhc breaks rushing regulations by gregg b palis about 400 freshmen attended various residence hall parties this past weekend the freshmen sections received invitations to the parties from the upperclass living groups of the residence hails council in most cases the freshmen were advised by their gryphons that they could attend the parties what the frashmen presumably did not know or were not told is that attendance at the parties la con trary to the open-house section of the rushing regulations tht rushing regulations accepted by the rushing commission makes it a violation for any upperclass living group to have open houses before november residence halls council president jim winchester explained in part wednesday why the residence halls are choosing to break away from the regulations be cited " extreme dedication to the freshman interest as primary among the motives of rhc this same interest for the freshman was mentioned in rhc's proposal for rushing changes presented to the rushing commission last year in that proposal rhc suggested the no contact rule be abolished and that freshmen and upperclasamen be free to associate without fear of dirty rushing freshmen would also be allowed to attend one party at each upperclass house during the fall semester under the rhc proposal the proposal was never accepted by the rushing commission but now the residence halls are acting as if the proposal went into effect winchester has not said that rhc will pay no attention to the rushing regulations what he did do wednesday night was to give a history of rhc's rushing program fl*w photo by goldberg rhc allocates - $ 100 to mmtu centennial house and mcclintic-marshall to entertain freshmen at two open houses during the fall semester the open houses are contrary to rush ing commission regulations social hours extended by marty marasco new regulations extending the hours during which women guests are permitted in living groups have been released by the student committee on social codes these hours are sunday through thursday rrom 10 a.m to mid night and friday and saturday from 10 a.m to 2 a.m the regulations have been approved by preston parr dean of student life and clarence campbell dean or residence they will take effect immediately the new regulations were re leased by al borin 69 chairman of the committee at a meeting attended by representatives of the residence halls council the interfraternity council and the freshman residence halls each living group will assume corporate responsibility for the actions of its individual members : . the committee's report stales that they feel the new measures are a significant step towards greater acceptance of responei - hlltty by students borin pointed out that the new measures are a self regulating mechaji>«d each living group will mow take care of its own problems this will allow stu dents to accept and realise the responsibilities given them under the code added borln the revised hours are the limits within which women guests may be entertained in private rooms with the doors wide open ft is up to the individual living group to set its own hours within these limits the chairman of the arcadia social coda committee must than be officially notified of tat hours the living trow wisßss to mt these hour may becnsßfsd by tlw it vine group at any time tht responsibility for enf orci ng tlw hours will ba placed on tat sadlvfcttml tlw mvtpjfroup and the officers of tlw bring grcus city scored by editors by neal arluck at muhlenberg the recent furor over the appearance of negro playwright leßoi jones at muhlenberg college on sept 15 has caused wit holding from the mall of the first issue of the muhlenberg weekly and the ap pearance in yesterday's edition of a scathing editorial attacking the small-minded citizenry of allentown jones read the muhlenberg students an essay about the newark riots and civic corruption the essay waa written in the vernacular of the ghetto and waa liberally sprinkled with what are commonly considered obscenities an immediately unfavor able reaction to the program came from the allen town community martha schlanker chairman of the assembly pro gram was confronted by local radio station wkap which challenged her to defend the language used by jones also the allentown call-chronicle carried a strong editorial the same day entitled " was all the filth necessary r ' the sept 21 issue of the muhlenberg weekly carried a front page story on the jones presen tation included were several quotations containing some of jones moreexpllcitvernaculaiiams.com plaints over the issue started flowing in from alumni college personnel and members of the allentown community who had obtained one of the 2,000 copies circulated on campus meanwhile the issue was running into trouble with the mail the 500 copies which were to be sent to alumni and the allentown area were being held up at the allentown post office according to assistant postmaster elmer r lehr the papers were being held pending word from washington on whether they could be sent through the mall before any word was received a phone call waa received from donna schultz editor-in-chief of the muhlenberg weekly requesting return of the papers yesterday's issue of the paper contained an edi torial explaining the reasons behind the decision to withhold the first issue the editorial said in b * w photo by goldberg vanishing elm trees -
