council said wednesday night that the upperclass resi dence halls will obey the present rushing regulations in a prepared statement winchester said although we question the validity of these regulations rhc will no longer continue to contest them at least for the pre sent to much attention is being directed at the alleged violation of regulations thus directing attention from the underlying cause the segregation and isolation of the freshmen rhc will continue to press its case strongly before the student life committee as it did last year before the rushing commission winchester did not wish to comment on the reasons for the reversal of policy which in effect abolished " no contacting as far as rhc was concerned preston parr dean of student life said wednesday night i welcome the statement in all respects prior to the statement by winchester prof wayne kraft chairman of the student life committee said that the committee had reached three conclusions concerning the rhg controversy over the rushing regulations kraft said the committee is not • disciplinary body and is therefore not interested in the rhc parties that freshmen attended on sept 23rd which seemed to violate the rushing regulations he also said that the slc believed it was necessary to further clarify the relations between rhc and the rush ing commission and the latter and the blc the third matter that the committee discussed in con nection with the present controversy was the com mittee's intent to look more closely into the freshmen year and see how it can be improved kraft said that the slc has decided to put that ques tion first on their priority list when they begin their regular weekly meeting next thursday in a letter sent to winchester kraft said it seems reasonably clear to me that rhc has violated the rules of the university in reaching this conclusion kraft quoted the university james winchester sds will demonstrate for mcnamara's visit the lehigh students for a democratic society completed plans at wednesday's meeting for an anil war and anti draft demonstration during founder's day proceedings on sunday the group plans to picket secretary of defense robert mcnamara mcnamara heads a list of five men receiving honorary decrees sds president herb ford has said about mcnamara's presence on campus even though the president w deming lewis said mcnamara is not coming in any connection with the war we feel his position is too important in this filthy and dirty affair for us to pass up this chance to show our feelings the head of the group's demonstration committee ira dember 68 said that students from muhien berg moravian cedar crest lafayette northampton community college kutztown state college and local high schools will be joining lehigh students and townspeople in the picket lines the pickets will assemble outside grace hall at about 1 p.m sunday well in advance of the 2:30 p.m starting time for the formal founder's day ceremonies there the group decided that any picket sign which is not obscene will be allowed in the line also black armbands will be passed out to the pickets in commemoration of those on both sides who have died in the " unjust war dember said he has been in communication with university officials in the " mutual interest of preserving order on sunday members of sds will be on hand a proctors during the demonstration to keep it orderly the proctors will wear white armbands with sds printed on them the committee head also said iher was some favorable response to the leaflets distributed throughout the campus soliciting students to join the demonstration hundreds of the iesltx&s have also been distributed to area colleges other dignitaries who will be honored sunday by the university including publishing an evaluation of the 70 class cabinet last year and following up stop the world with a spring show from left are secretary al eisley president lee stewart and vice president bill taylor see story page nine gunnar myrdal to appear at u dr gunnar myrdai distin guished swedish economist and social philosopher will deliver the freshman parent's day speech and receive an honorary degree during the founder's day ceremonies sunday myrdai who is best known in america for his critical analysis of the negro problem will give a talk entitled " are we living in a fool's paradise tomorrow night in grace hall monday myrdai will be the principal speaker at an informal luncheon for the students and faculty of the social relations department crossroads africa and arcadia later at 4 p.m " the scientific approach to the study of the underdeveloped countries will be his topic at a joint social science seminar myrdai has acutely observed the negro's place in america for the last quarter of a century in 1844 he published a classic study of the race problem an american dilemma the negro problem and modern demo cracy in it he stated that the system of se£regj«ionai«i discrimination in this country is ot such a nature as to permanently exclude the interbreeding of races in his book he continued that the gradual self-elevation of minority groups was a myth and that only inter vention by the government could help such groups become more productive and self-reliant myrdai has been charged with being too caustic in his opinions of america but he has answered the accusations by saying i per mit myself free opinions in america this is my second home i'm a swede who feels as much allegiance to america as americans " the thing about america is that you do so many tilings that are cruel-and so many things that are fine he said you're a great country with many problems with tremendous discussions going on all the time and with people who are willing to put their shoulders to the wheel and solve them in 1947 myrdai was appointed secretary general of the economic council for europe and spent the next 10 years in geneva doing economic research myrdai served as a member of the swedish senate from 1936 38 for the social democratic party where he was noted for constantly crossing party lines he describes himself politi cally as a jeffersonlan democrat but he says that communists have denounced hi mas fascist and the conservatives as a communist in summing up his views myr dai stated that private business can't — or doesn't--plan and in vest for the whole economy the government can and should rationally induced change and planning of it are the dynamics of a properly functioning demo cracy gunnar myrdal see return page 4
