significantly by the student life committee at its meeting thursday afternoon the approved motion states " the committee on stu dent life reaffirms the principle of free association among students therefore the university imposes no limits on free association except those necessary to prevent the interruption of productive study other points in the motion include individuals or living groups that engage in unauthorized activities that bring pressure on or interfere with the aca demic work of the freshmen will be subject to disciplin ary action the slc will set the times in which upperclassmen are permitted to visit the freshman residence hells for the purpose of rushing or contacting visiting the freshman residence halls by representa tives of any fraternity or upperclass residence hall for the expressed purpose of contacting or rushing is not permitted during the fall semester of 1967 these motions will become effective when the chairman of the slc receives a communication from the president of each organization rhc ifc and the gryphon society stating the rules adopted by that organization within the framework of the new motions in a letter to the presidents of rhc ifc and the gryphon society prof r w kraft chairman of the slc noted the following in order to " help put this communica tion in proper perspective the motions passed by slc become in effect the for mulated policies of lehigh university unless and until they are reversed by higher authority the slc does not feel that the motions just passed will solve the ill-defined yet real problems of freshman life rushing etc the slc feels that it is completely contrary to the spirit of intellectual inquiry for the university to make a rule which says that student x cannot talk to student y thus section 1v.1.a of the rushing regulations of oct im6 have been repealed while the committee does not feel the new policies have solved all the problems and the new motions are not necessarily the final answers the principle of free communication among students is of such importance that the slc has decided to act now groups within the university such as the individual fraternities the ifc residence halls etc can and must make rules to govern their own members within the framework of the overall university policy the rushing commission is an important committee of the slc and will continue to function concerning the effect rhcs illegal parties on sept 23 had on the committee's decision kraft said 1 it had an effect in the sense that it made more people aware of this problem i think that klrby house had more of an effect commenting on the new proposal dean preston parr said that philosophically we are all in agreement he add ed " first we want to bring freshman as fully as we can into the life of the university community in ways which reduce isolation and increase the freshman's opportunity to mature second we are concerned that this be done in ways that do not interfere with the academic welfare of uni versity or individual persons third we want it done in ways that will support rather than detract from extra-curricular activities clarence b campbell dean of residence and a member of the slc said that the new proposal provides the upperclassmen with a challenge to improve the freshman year i hope we will be able to avoid the problems we have had in the past with rushing commenting on the effect recent rhc policy has had on the proposal's rapid passage campbell said " i don't think the actions of rhc in itself had much influence but the fact that there were a number of people enlightened as a result of rhcs action had an important influence he also cited kirby house as contributing significantly to the entire situation prof r.w kraft berg controversy alive black power advocate lerol jones speech on the muhlenberg campus one month ago is causing in creased controversy the question of auowing controversial persons to speak to the student body came to a head when the school's board of trustees student life com mittee recommended the administration evaluate and possibly use restraint in selecting speakers dr erllng n jensen president of muhlenberg disagreed in a statement to the hoard some col â– lege sources reported that jensen offered his resignation however another source said jensen only told the board that he had the pri vilege of resigning the recommendation of the student life committee was not brought to a vote instead the board considered jensen's re commendation that the existing policy be assigned to a disciplining students involved in off campus incidents and the result may mean that more students will be getting records with the bethlehem police department the apparent change in attitude came to light after moravian college decided lo press charges against two lvmgu frafihnwn who were discovered in a woman's dorm on that campus last week moravian dean of students george stanley said sunday that the college decided to press charges after he was told that lehigh did not intend to take any action against the pair william quay assistant dean of student life said sunday that lehigh's decision not to take action broke all precedents in such cases he said that there had been an unofficial agreement among area colleges giving a college the option of disciplining its own students in trouble at other campuses on the night the incident occurred quay said dean stanley asked him if lehigh would handle the case on the basis of precedent quay said he replied that the university would discipline the two freshmen however on wednesday the committee on discipline decided not to act on the incident quay said according to stanley it was u officially recognizes the lower east side by emfck martin the lower east side has been approved as an official university living group the committee on student activities has accepted the constitution of the former a-l section of mcclintic-marshall house recognizing lower east side as the official name of the living unit robert j welntraub president of lover east said he was " gratified by the action the decision culminates an extensive publicity campaign and a broad program designed to make apparent the group's distinctiveness during the past two years lower east side has actively participated in intramural athletics the ugly man contest and the campus chest drive the group has initiated successful faculty discussion and colloquium programs and has developed a file system concessions program and an alumni correspondence program the students designed and constructed a pub-like lounge in the converted presidential suite diversity between the six aving groups is m=m " exists to an extreme says welntraub " yet the alphabetical-numerical designation hardly allow proper recognition and distinction also the a-l designation offered very little in the way of differentiating between a freshman and an upper
