lehigh university brown and white m 79 - no 9 bethlehem pa - friday october 20 1967 8660331 weekend program set a concert by the university band and glee club and a special chapel service are two of the highlights of upparclasstnf.n parents weekend the department of music will present its annual parents concert featuring the glee club and band at 8:15 p.m tomorrow in grace hall the band conducted by prof jonathan elkus act ing chairman of the music department and the glee club directed by jameson marvin instructor of music will combine to present william w.howe's " sine nomine prior to the joint performance the glee club and band will each present several groups of selections the glee club will open the program with three renaissance pieces byrd's rejoice rejoice agrlcola's " credo je ne vis oncques i and han dle's " pueri concinite a group of lighter pieces will include " what shall we do with a drunken sailor shenandoah and vive i amour fredrlc wilson 69 will conduct the flee club ln schubert's " bootgeaang ( boat song they will also sing two other schubert numbers der gondel fahrer the gondolier and " zur guten nacht a very good night to you glee club soloists will include thomas a blc kerstaff 69 bass bruce p schablingar 70 baritone and david r smith iii 88 tenor one of the highlights of the band's performance will be a composition written by elkus entitled " acceleration fanfare the fanfare will be fol lowed directly by " pride of the 97 a march com posed by richard f goldman in honor of elkus ten years aa director of the lehigh band following johann strauss ips polka " trltah tratsch opus 214 thomas carlton 69 student conductor will conduct bach's " prelude and fugue in g minor this will be followed by sousa's march " the gladiator ■tickets for the concert open to the public will be available at the door on sunday at 11 a.m the rev dr howard h cox professor of bible theology old testament at moravian theological seminary will be guest speaker at the chapel service in packer memorial church hew discipline board in effect for freshmen by gary sims yesterday at n a.m the function of the old freshman quad board ended and the jurisdiction of a new disciplinary board for freshmen officially took effect a panel consisting of residence halls council vice president daniel sassi 69 cyanide vice president stewart van scoyoc 69 and gryphon society president john musewicz 68 announced the change m a meeting held wednesday night before an assembly of freshman section presidents and vice presidents unlike the former board which m disciplinary cases could only recommend action to clarence b campbell dean of residence halls the new board is a board of action it assumes full responsibility m determining whether or not punishment is necessary or what degree of punishment should be applied serious cases will still be reported to campbell however the new board consists of two committees with six members each - two gryphons throe upperclassmen and one freshman in the freshman residence halls demerits will be issued by the section president or vice president and the gryphons for violations of study conditions destruction of property violation of social regulations for women guests ; iid similar offenses the issuing of demerits is reported to the board the alternative of appeal was stressed at the meeting a student who has been given university demerits and feels that too many were issued or thai the action was unfair may appeal to the board if his appeal is refused he may have his case reviewed by a higher judiciary committee to further insure a student against unfair issuance of demerits a section officer who the board feels has given too many will be questioned as to his qualifications for office he may be asked to resign by the board an officer's jurisdiction m giving demerits is strictly territorial he mat not give demerits for violations in other sections however he may give demerits to a member of another section who commits a violation m the officer's section raw photn by bfnnfr debaters richard schwartz 70 and william sklar 70 combined to take top honor m the annual williams intramural debate contest on tuesday for their efforts the pair received 200 and an inscribed bowl tax acquires tep affiliation tau alpha kappa lehigh's only local fraternity has affiliated with the national fraternity tau epsilon phi the chapter will be officially initiated into the national at a formal initiation banquet on nov b tau epsilon phi's national executive secretary international president and regional president ac well as members of lehigh's administration and faculty will attend the banquet tax petitioned the university to affiliate with a national fraternity in the spring of 1967 the committee on student activities approved the petition m principle at that time after contacting the representatives of national fraternities that were not already on campus the fraternity narrowed the choice to four and the executive secretaries of those groups came to talk to the fraternity again the executive secretaries also talked with the administration about two weeks ago tax notified the university of its decision and the university approved this choice tuesday tau epsilon phi was founded in 1910 at columbia university as a nonsectarlan fraternity there are 72 chapters of the fraternity across the country with the national headquarters located in new york according to jeffrey picker 48 secretary of tax there were no specific reasons why tau epsilon phi was chosen m preference to the other nationals that were being considered he added thai there were many " intangibles including national and local reputation of tau epsilon phi that influenced their decision picker emphasized that there are several chapters of tau epsilon phi nearby including ones at rutgers drexel penn and temple picker added that tax will not be required to go through the colony stage but will become a full-fledged chapter as soon as it la initiated with respect to monetary considerations picker said that tau epsilon phi could help them build a new house sooner than the other b a w photo by doster ugly hen took small tokens for their living groups m front of the lin derman library wednes day tho 10 groups receiving the most money m the alpha phi omega contest will win preferen tial seating for the houseparty football game — sammies gain victory in intramural debating william e sklar 70 and rlcard v schwartz ' 7 0 of sigma alpha mv won first prize of 200 and an inscribed silver bowl in the williams intramural debate contest tuesday night m christmas saucon hall the second prize of 100 was awarded to james f jordan 69 and george a ikeda 69,oftheta chi in what dr j burke severs chairman of the williams prize committee called " excellent work the teams debated a civil suit on the question of alleged negligence on the part of the operator of an automobile m striking and killing a nine-year old girl taking the affirmative stand sklar and schwartz making use of the term defensive drivinz maintained that the driver of the car had seen the child beside the road at a distance of 790 feet since he did not slow down did not apply the brakes and failed see chapel page 4 see tep page 4 see sammies page 9
