silverman thd desirability of residence halls rushing waa severely questioned at a special meeting of the residence halls council thursday night preston parr dean of student life dr george conard professor of metallurgy and mechanical science dr robert jones assistant professor of social psychology and andy zeratsky 68 presi dent of thornburg led the discussion the major objection raised against residence hall rushing was that due to insufficient space lt would cause the rejection of many students from upper class residence halls the rejection by peers as pect of rushing wassmphasized students would then have to seek off campus quarters and be deprived of the " living group experience an anti-rush opinion was offered by prof conard who stated that only " fools rush he stated further that fraternities often produce stereotyping and conformity residence halls have always empha sized individuality no one was forced to join ln group functions or activities conard worried that with the influence of rushing this individual free dom will be usurped as ls often the case in fra ternities parr was in favor of the residence halls rushing as a whole rather than by separate houses rush ing competition between halls would only serve to set up barriers between them and cause ul feel ings instead rhc should play up the positive as pects of residence hall living ae opposed to fraternity living dr jones agreed stating that if the residence halls competed against the fraterni ties ln individual rushing they would lose andy zaratsky waa the sole member of the panel ln favor of rushing lntheresidencehalls.lt waa ma contention that to insure harmony within a living group membera of that group must have some power to choose the people with whom they will be living it is necessary to have people in the living group who wiii contribute he added and this is most favorably accomplished by rushing after each panel member had spoken discussion was open to the floor the majority seemed opposed to rushing but favored limited selectivity it was suggested that rushing encouraged a false image and that only ihr ough informal acquain tances would selectivity prove valuable each hall then could select for membership freshmen with whom a more natural relationship had been estab lished formal rushing or magnified contact with fresh men in their rooms waa generally development within an informa tion resource laboratory donald j hillman chairman of the department of philosophy and director of the project explained that the system is designed to cope with the infor mation explosion he added that improved techniques are needed for computerized retrieval of the vast amounts of information being stored in computers the system is composed of computers at lehigh and penn center in philadelphia it will allow computer users to have access to available knowledge via telephone lines to philadelphia the information is received at a teletype terminal at lehigh according to hillman tele vision scopes will be added to the system early next yeartodisplay the information the system will provide the user with information related to his subject as well as the facts be requested hillman is director of the center for the information sciences at the university the department directly involved in the development of the pilot com puterized retrieval system hillman constructed a compre hensive retrieval design theory which was used in building the knowledge storage system dr w deming lewis president of the university described the program as " mapping the intellectual geog raphy of scientific knowledge omar named ugliest first freshman to win " omar of taylor e-2 won the ugly man contest sponsored by alpha phi omega it is the first time in the history of the contest that a freshman has been declared the ugliest man on campus the winner of the contest was determined by the amount of contri butions he received omar headed the ust of 31 entrants with a grand total of 299.16 however there was a note of sadness in his victory while seeking contributions ln the city of bethlehem four of omar's followers were arrested by bethlehem police for solicitation without a permit the charge carries a maximum penalty of 90 days in jail and a fine of 300 as the winner of the contest omar's living group will receive a plaque which will be formally presented at the intermission of the houseparty concert the top ten groups will receive preferential seating for the houseparty football game following omar in the standings were phlip de byrd of lambda chi alpha roagie-man of delta upsilon cro-mag of taylor w-3 the grub of mcconn yuri the mad russian of beta theta pi sir loin of drinker 3 a prof brockway of sigma chi and a tie between big s of theta chi and skin jeff davis of sigma alpha mu the contest netted 1,193.49 proceeds from the contest are given to the campus chest which distributes the money to crossroads africa the bethlehem community chest scholarships and various other charities raw photo by butt bethlehem police told demonstrators at bethlehem's draft boards friday not to block the sidewalk herb ford left waa one of the organizers of the protest which mourned those killed in vietnam draft boards picketed by gregg fales u students lead protest approximately 20 college-age persons demonstrated at bethle hem's selective service boards nos 113 and 114 friday morning led by lehigh students herb ford 68 and ira dember 68 the group of young men and women handed out leaflets mourning those killed ln vietnam talked to the administrator of the local boards or stood on the sidewalk outside the board a bethlehem police squad car circled the 500 block on main street keeping an eye on the demonstration however the protest was orderly and police did not interfere with the group originally about half the group had intended to sit ln the selective service office while the rest handed out leaflets on the street board administrator russell moore however asked everyone to leave except ford and dember the pair remained in the office nearly an hour and a half and asked moore questions about the morality and operation of the draft according to dember dember said moore refused to answer any philosophical ques tions but did talk to the students about procedures concerning the selective service system the remaining youths most of whom were from lehigh moravian coheg and north ampton community college stood on the street outside the office talking to the press or passers-by most shoppers avoided the group for awhile until several protesters moved to the corner of see pickets page 12
