lower east side-$6.27 theta xi 4.03 m-m a-3-$3.20 richards 3-a 3.04 dravo b-2-s3.oo;tauep silon pl-$2.31 richards 2-a 2.16 delta chl-$2.13 gryphon society-$1.88 and richards 3 b-sl.7t as of monday 1,700 had been collected added to the 1,100 collected in the ugly man con test the campus chest drive now totals 2,800 constantino vasiiiadis 68 chairman of the drive said that it is going to be difficult to reach the 5,000 goal last year's goal for the campus chest drive which includes the ugly man contest contributions from rkc and ifc and faculty so licitations was 4,500 and 4 600 was collected this year's ug ly man contest netted 1,100 as compared to the 1,700 collected last year the major contributing factor to the poor returns according to vasiiiadis was the fraternity effort with the exception of the two fraternities who placed m the top ten their attitude was very poor one half of the fraternity representatives didn't even appear at the drive's kick off banquet the total collected will still be distributed according to the percentages stated at the begln ing of the drive said vasiiiadis b aw photo by rath freshmen are welcomed by fraternity men at open houses sunday afternoon on the upper hill the freshmen were given a chance to tour the houses and meet the members m order i give them an idea of what fraternity life is like student rights position considered by deans the dean's committee of the university is currently considering a joint statement on the rights and freedoms of students which was drawn up m june 1967 by five national educational organizations the deans are taking each segment of the statement and seeing how the university compares to the " ideal situation passed by the national student assoc the statement is now up for the approval of nine remaining national educational organizations if pass ed it will be the first national statement of university and college policy concerning student rights and freedoms the statement is divided into six areas freedom of access to high er education in the classroom student affairs student records off-campus freedom of students and procedural standards m dis ciplinary proceedings several important ideas are presented under the same heading under in the classroom the committee feels that student views beliefs and political associations should be considered as confidential material the committee's view of student records is similar it em phasized separation of academic and disciplinary records the committee's findings on student affairs are outlined •» m four sections protecting the rights of the student the main without an orchestra the turnau opera co performs stravinsky's the rake's progress friday night m grace hall the props for the play were few but the voicos for the parts were fine see review page 4 draft methods change by jeff balsai course failures judged students who drop or fall too many courses may face reclas sification under a new selective service regulation effective next september according to james h wagner registrar the regula tion replaces the previous method of classification on the basis of class rank and selective service test scores the regulation states that a student must have completed at least 25 per cent of his college work by the end of his freshman year fifty per cent must be completed m the sophomore year and 75 per cent m the junior year during a recent meeting of the committee on the standing of students wagner said " i feel that the students should be made aware of the fact that they should exert every effort to be m phase by next september the percentage will be computed on a september to september basis it is possible for a student who finds himself below the percentage to increase it with summer school courses wagner noted he also stated that falling or dropping a course does not necessarily put a student below the percentage required only if the numlier of hours carried falls below 12 is there a chance of not meeting the requirement wagner said that since the regulation goes into effect m september anyone now below the required percentage has a chance to catch up he said the percentages of d's and f's are getting smaller and added that those who are helow their percentages usually cannot meet their curriculum requirements they either change to i curriculum whose requirements they can satisfy or drop out wagner said the registrar's office is responsible for notifying local draft boards o changes m the status of students if the boards ask for a percentage of student work completed the office is responsible for determining them however wagner said that as yet no criteria haws been established to enable this determination to be made wagner stressed the details of the regulation have not been worked out yet town council asks for campus center by marty marasco " town center - nov will he the major topic at tomorrow night's town council meeting « dave fair 69 president of the town council said they would like to see how many people they can get interested m really getting things moving fair stressed that their ultimate objective is to get something written on paper from the university saying they will get park house or a similar structure on campus by a specific date this spring a committee of town students drew up a four page proposal on the reasons why they wanted the town center the support they had for it and the means they planned for financing it at that time they received the support of the deans council and w doming lewis university president lewis then said according to denny alexander 68 a member of the town council working on the project that the proposal would have to gothe the university comml tee on planning and development m june and then would be placed be fore the trustees m september however the students found out last month that the proposal had never reached the trustees and it is doubtful that it even went before the planning and development committee fair said he hoped the proposal will reach the trustee i january see town page 8 see deans page 8
