lehigh university brown and white vol 79 no 16 866-0331 bethlehem pa - friday november 17 1967 rhc advocates closed doors by larry silverm an residence halls council passed unanimously at tuesday's meet ing a motion calling for the abolishment of the " open door regulation in the new social code the formal motion reads be ii resolved that the requirement that door remain open bt abolished jack bannon 68 author of the notion cited the proposal as a further application of the principle of student re»poniil»;;iiy justifica tion for the motion was that the present social code regulations create unnatural and unrealistic conditions for the entertainment of women guests and bannon said at times due to the closeness of living quarters the open door rule is impractical the motion must be presented to the faculty for final consideration bannon's proposal was directed originally to dean of residence clarence b campbell bannon said that he waated campbell to approve open doors for all residence halls student however bannon said that alter talking to campbell wednesday the motion should have been aimed at the student life committee or at arcadia for a university wide policy chance bannon said campbell had told him that although fully in favor of a change in policy he could not act as the faculty had turned down an open-door policy earlier this year the student lite committee had no closed-door claus in its social codes until the faculty put it in bannon said in other business the followtngwere nominated for rhc's represen tatives to arcadia neil goldfein 70 bruce bersln 70 i*onard pouveromo 69 howard white 69 norman monhait,'7o,and brooks natter ffi the council also discussed freshman questions it was decided that on syracuse week end dec 9 free cocktail parties would be given for freshmen these parties will take place in each freshman house with rhc providing alcoholic refresh ments even house will be responsible for cleanup decoration of lounges etc a project figure of 1 000 was set aside for these parties a report of the annual frosh fling was also given less than 100 couples attended causing rhc to incur a loss of 416 finally jim wiikneitir president cited the following changes in the rushing schedule jan 30-31 and feb 1-2 will be legal rushing days for rhc b aw photo by collins thursday afternoon appro imately 500 students ran in the annual turkey trot the marathon event covered 3 1 miles up and down the hilly roads of the campus and was run in sub freezing tem peratures town seeks finances town center proposed the town council appointed a five-member finance committee wednesday to formulate a statement of possible financial support from the town students for the proposed town house the council formed the committee realizing that the university trustees will want some con crete statement of how the town students will support a town center a town center proposal has been in the offing for the past 20 years and was recently given a boost when w demlng lewis university presi dent promised his support and informed the council that he would mention the proposal at the trustees meeting in january another proposal was made to contact the alumni for financial support but tfter discussion it was generally thought wiser to wait until some thing more positive than just a proposal to the trustees had been accomplished the council ex pressed the hope that after a few years of smooth operation of a university annexed building the town students might approach the alumni for support for the building of a new town center - in another move it was proposed that all town seniors and their parents place an asterisk below their monetary pledge to the university stating that payment on the pledge would not begin until a town center was established stanley vasiliadis 71 was iecte«l4b*mber-&t large to the class of 71,1 mi pre—hf the town students from that class he cannot be a vot ing member however because no formal appli cation was made to the cabinet at its formation jeffrey parks 70 was elected arcadia repre sentative from the town council the question of representation on the class of 70 cabinet was also introduced at the meeting the town students are presently being represented by a gryphon on the cabinet this representation would have been valid if no application had been made by the town living group however two sophomores applied last semester and according to the cabinet constitution at least one member from a living group must be chosen if an application is made lee stewart 70 class cabinet president said as far as i know no application was made from town students or at least no one stated on their application that they would be living in town jack bannon some u students use pot despite laws by alan b soschin this is the final part in a series of articles examining the marijuana problem through out the nation and at lehigh and the uni versity policy concerning marijuana smok ing lehigh with its flexible drug policy has not produced an environment conducive to marijuana use but it has created one in which a substantial number of students are willing to use pot according to the policy spelled out in the letncii handbook the use or sale of illegal drugs by any student without prescription is regarded as a threat to the community and disciplinary action up to and including dis missal from school may be taken this is an easily available weapon for university administrators when and if the dm situa tion gets out of hand this would be as arthur mann assistant dean of students said when th problem reaches a point at which the university can no longer function effectively as an edu cator on the subject of marijuana the purpose of the university mann believes is to serve as an educator when it ceases to be able to do its job other actions must be taken mann like preston parr and william quay dean and assistant dean of student life respectively and clarence campbell dean of residence suspect that marijuana is used to a certain extent on the lehigh cam - dus although they are unwilling toestimate the percentage of smokers they believe the group to be small but the number may not be as small as they believe in an investigation i made con cerning marijuana on eampus i found that between 7.4-9.0 per cent of the under graduates at lehigh smoke marijuana at least once every two weeks based on the enrollment figures for the fall of 1967 these percentages would indicate that there are 233-289 student users these figures and the ones that follow were compiled on the basis of interviews with more than 150 students this group represented most living groups and where residence halls were concerned many indi vidual sections the students within the living group were picked at random no investigation was made concerning graduate students and they were dot used for interviews i was not concerned with the personal smoking habits of the individuals question ed but rather the percentage of smokers in that person's living group i did not seek specific names i used the various estimates from people within a living group to arrive at a percen tage for that living group in special in stances where one not affiliated with a cer tain living group had become well acquainted with the group his information was also used individual estimates were averaged to achieve the final percentage there was no extrapolation except in the cases of a few fraternities in these cases they were placed in the most conservative category in cases where there appeared to be the distinct possibility of boasting and the fig ures were at great variance with others in the same category double checks were made with no pushers to replenish diminishing supplies users must take care of their own needs by traveling to such cities as new york and philadelphia one student may bring bank enough for himself and a few friends he will sell to ma friends at cost rather than at a profit thus with mobility a key factor in obtain ing marijuana it follows that smoking is relatively low among freshmen based upon a total of 780 frosh there are 30-40 smok ers — 4-5 percent of the class a majority of thix group is found in richards house the " cleanest groups are the residents of the centennial houses and those students who have permanent residences in nearby firms — not nmriantk whn room in town but the 1 who live there on a year-round basis in these groups marijuana use is neglig ible the other group of town students those who only room in town when attending le high the fraternities and one upparclass dorm mccltntic-marsnall house contain larger numbers of smokers mam with a group of 270 students has 27-35 smokers for a 10-13 per cent there are 1254 men in fraternities with 1184 living in the houses and the remainder except in rare instances living in town the see some page 3 dunrlnc lunltfew the lafayette bonfire wafl ignited between « na 6)30 ims morning by 28 members of the class of 71 and sever upper -
