lehigh university brown and white vol 79 na 19 bethlehem pa . _ tuesday december 5 1967 866-0331 campus snarled by snow storm by dee mcallister many sliding cars and resulting accidents marked mat thursday's snowstorm on campus " l had never seen a worse storm of that type said frank donchea captain of the campus police he explained that very soon after tho storm began around noon a glaze carne over the snow and made it very slippery one main problem he said was that the fall began around lunrhtlme and that there was much traffic on the quickly icy roada because the roads were slippery unusually soon the cinders which were as usual dropped later when ice ordinarllly appears didn't do too much good he said john r gallenherger 88 program director of wlrn reported one particularly bad accident on taylor street just below lamberton hall he said that a taxi a bethlehem globe-times car and a sports car had a pileup which a by-standing student knowledgeable in the subject estimated the total damages at 950 serious injury he said was narrowly averted later at the same scene when a jeep skidding out of control towards the three stricken cars just missed pinning the woman driver of one of the cars between her car and the jeep also he said that to his personal knowledge the entrances to tha university by packer memorial chapel and taylor street were blocked by accidents around 2:30 p.m that day he was informed too that at the same time the entrances at sayre park and the alumni memorial building were botttenecked thus leaving only the eighth street entrance open robert numbers superintendent of buildings and grounds said that he thought that his department had done a satisfactory job in dealing with the storm at his disposal he said are three vehicles for dumping cinders and plowing he said that about 2 men were used to fight the storm besides the custodians of buildings who take care of the area immediately adjacent to their buildings numbers said that the men use chemicals and solvents shovels snow blowers the 39 cans ol cinders placed around the campus besides the plow trucks ln the fight against the storm the snow removal and road clearance by his department has been " upgraded , he said by specific assignments of particular campus areas to the personell and equipment involved b * w photo by camana hazardous driving conditions prevailed on campus roads director of an american friends service committee post in a town close to da nang the post was an artificial limb center building and fitting artificial limbs and training crippled vietnamese to use them pixton told of ms experiences and knowledge of vietnam and showed slides he took of the country moravian's prof leon sherman lectured on the " history of vietnam from early asian history thousands of years ago to the 1956 population movement between the north and the south sherman spoke on vietnamese cultural and political history tracing the influence various colonial powers such as china france and the united states have had on vietnam sherman said that despite several cul tural similarities between china and vietnam china has had far less influence on the country than have either france or the united states sherman said that it was a myth that many north vietnamese moved south when they had a chance in 1956 because they expected to find democracy ln south vietnam a panel including sherman prof david rabaut moravian david amidon lemgh department of history and dr william berkowltz lafayette department of psychology discussed america's rom in viet nam panel members voiced view points ranging from rabaut's proposal that america ls an imperialist power and has all of the responsi bilities of imperialsim to berkowitz's stand that war is immoral the four-hour program started with a documen tary film on the vietnam war wmch relied heavily upon shock techniques and spliced and inserted quotes of president johnson and others the afternoon's presentation of " flicks facts and opinions was organized by the lehigh student's for a democratic society ln conjunction with student groups at cedar crest muhlenberg moravian lafayette and lepoco a lemgh valley peace organization proposed beta house will cost 400,100 construction of a new chapter house for beta theta pi will cost 400,100 elmer glick university treasurer announced yesterday the new residence a two-story building of modified contemporary design will be located on approximately the same site as the present house in sayre park there will be accommodations for 44 students the first floor will include a kitchen storage and utility rooms a dining room seven two-man study rooms two three-man study rooms and two dormitory sleeping rooms the second floor will contain a living room foyer six two-man study rooms four three man study rooms and two additional dormitory sleeping rooms additional funds have been set aside for new furnishings for the living and dining rooms pharo and haas of bethlehem ls the architect the contract for construction has been awarded to earl w ecker inc bethlehem beta theta pi has occupied a number of houses since it was founded in 1891 the present house is 41 years old plans for a new beta house were begun eight years ago the delay in the beginning of construction was caused by difficulties in collecting the necessary money and problems david amidon of tha university's history department and dr.wil liam berkowltz of the lafayette psychology department prof eugene jacobson of moravian was moderator for tho discussion tb program was opened with iaieineiiis from flai tui and berkowltz and was followed by discussion among the panelists rabaut said the united states must maintain order and the status quo ln the world and that this is a responsibility which must he faced he added that the question of vietnam could best be dealt with ln reality and said " to talk of a sudden withdrawal ls unrealistic later ln the discussion rabaut said that pulling out of vietnam was unrealistic on economic and political grounds he pointed out that c_tttngt_es7o billion defense budget by an immediate with drawal from vietnam would have
