lehigh university brown and white vol 79 no 23 methlchem pa - tuesday january 9 1968 866-0331 street closing plan approved by council by 808 benner the city council of bethlehem approved the city's proposal to close south new st from morton street to packer avenue at its meeting dec 26 the move backed by the university erased a major problem to the smooth procedure of the uni versity's building program and longrange develop ment plans according to albert zettlemoyer vice president ln charge of research the street now under ord nance control of the university " will remain open for some 18 months until vine street has been re built and morton street widened and extended to b rod he ad ave the long-debated proposal was approved by a slim four to three mrgln of city council opposition to the street closing ran high council had previously put of f a vote on the new street question because of a traffic study that was nearlng completion and a death ln the family of the attorney representing a group of south side citizens opposed to the closing rep fred b rooney d-pa in a letter to frank muhr council president and w demlng lewis university president urged the city and lehigh to " find some means by which this portion of a major south bethlehem street can remain open to public traffic ." h e said " pedestrian and vehicle traffic as well aa access to this area by emergency vehicles will be seriously impaired the group of south side citizens arguing ln opposition to the naw street closing was led by a bethlehem attorney and a clergyman zettlemoyer and atty alfred t williams ad vocated the closing baaed on the fact that large grants for expansion have already been approved and received zettlemoyer stated these grants are baaed upon the university's plans approved by tha ctty and cannot be changed without incurring substantial delays and additional coats baaed upon the opin ions of engineering and traffic authorities thr uni versity feels that ita program la in the beat interests of tha city of bethlehem and all of ita citizens aa well aa the university he also said that the closing will be necessitat ed by the increased flow of student pedestrian traf fic in tha area once tha building projects are completed • he noted that plans for utilities and drainage sys - terns tn the master plan for redevelopment require the closing of south naw street also pointed out at tha meeting waa the fact that the packer avenue urban renewal area will be de veloped by both the university and the bethlehem school dlatrict thus illustrating both lehigh's and tho city's interest in tha area ib a w photo by hoffheins a fresh blanket of snow greeted students en their ra tum from christmas vacation however they will only have to slip and slide across campus for more days of classes before finals begin next monday eric mann civil rights activist speaks on the newark riots last summer and save his critical opinion of contemporary a merica a half capacity audience at whitaker lab auditorium listened to him yesterday newark like vietnam by dee mcallister the reaction of the federal government to the ghetto-supported newark riots last summer was the same as to the peasant-supported vietnam war said eric mann a former field secretary for core and community organizer at the newark ghetto in a scathing attack on contemporary american society mann who was dismissed as a teacher by the newark public school sys tenn for unorthodox methods in a ghetto schooi spoke yesterday in whitaker lab for the arcadia lectures series just as the vietcong have the support of the people of vietnam mann said that the snipers and looters had the support of the newark ghetto he said that as the army in vietnam ls attacking all the people there the police in newark realizing that the " re volutionaries had the ghetto's support " physically intimidated all continuing on the riots mann said that their causes were grab bags for everyone's interpretations he said that the riots expressed the ghetto needs of property and liberation today mann said america ls blowing apart because we are only now realizing the conflicting vested interests for example he pointed out that black workers are competing with white workers for the same jobs generally mann said that the profit system was at the basis of america's malaise and that the policy for all sides of the country's activities seemed to be don't rock the boat he gave as an example his experience as a teacher about politics mann said that neither the gold water approach of abandoning the negro or the ken nedy way of offering a piece of the undesired american pie to the negro satisfies him ipltalism as big government nd big corporation and com unism as " just big govern ment mann called for a new eft to arise and find the alter ative of decentralization new malaria cure sought by u chemists a team of university chemists has joined in a government search for a cure for a new malaria strain that has infected 7,500 americans in vietnam the disease has resisted all types of usual anti malarial drugs the governmental pro gram ls aimed at finding a cure and consists of efforts by some 150 testing labs drug manufac turers and universities includ ing lehigh each participant la assigned a apecifle area ot con centration to insure against duplication of research borin cogut elected to hood arcadia xxii the officers of arcadia xxii were elected at a meeting dec 19 the new officers are presi dent—aldo borln 69 vice president - casey cogut 69 corresponding secretary jim tanenbaum 70 recording sec retary — rick slowes 69 treasurer -- rick rainin 69 steve globus had opposed bo rln for the presidency and cogut for the vice presidency although he made no campaign speech rainin was opposed by alan sheppard 69 and bruco berzin 70 tannenbaum and slowes ran unopposed by their offices . although he could not disclose the actual tally of votes for the candidates retiring president marty cohen reported that the new officers won pretty decisive victories — aldo bor in see malaria page 12
