brown and white vol 79 • no 46 bethlehem pa friday april 24 1968 44-033 lovin spoonful to sing tonight by john beitz for the past three years the levin spoonful have blended ft bit of rock with a lot of country and a measure of blues to product some of the moat unique sounds in the popular music field today tonight the spoonful will appear at the university's first outdoor concert in taylor stadium sponsored by the clase of 69 the concert will begin at 8:30 p.m and tickets will be sold at the door in case of rain the concert will be held in grace hall t ever-changing spoonful led by lead singer and writer john sebastian first made the national spotlight with their happy up-tempo sound of do you believe hi magic during the summer of 1 90s their follow-up " you didn't have to be so nice soon became a pop standard and the spoonful found itself in demand for personal appear miees acrovs tile nation daydreams the spoon's third recording released in early 1 966 became a number one tune and showed the extreme versltillty of the group it was followed by " did you ever have to make up your mind and the hard-rock sound of summer in the city the early spoonful consisted of sebastian zal yanovsky steve boone and joe butler the group's beginning was fax from successful their first job at the night owl cafe in greenwich village was received with mixed emotions owner joe mara disgustedly said t heard it all and dese guys don't make it ,** following their performance disappointed but still determined to make it big the spoonful retreated to the basement of the albert hotel each day they had to cross a gigantic pool of water in the basement filled with bugs centipedes and sightless fish they began wearing funny hats to fe«ep thejr hair clmui as they practiced in their filthy basement room after two months of dedicated work they emerged and reappeared at the night owl they were an instant success and quickly signed a major recording contract it had to happen said sebastian the original spoonfuls road to success included nine singles and several very successful albums following summer in the city the spoonful recorded rain on the roof in late 1960 nashville cats and darling be home soon in early 1067 and six o'clock tn the spring of 1967 " during the summer of 1967 zai yan ovsky left the spoonful and was replaced by jerry yester brother of jim yestcr of the association and a competent musician and arranger yester was responsible for arranging the associa tion's first two albums since that time the spuonfui have released two additional singles she is still a mystery and money in addition the spoonful's second album of their gr«*imf hj has become a nationwide bestseller and their recent performances have excited audi ences throughout the east the lovin spoonfu parr says cure useful by jim mcgee dean's reactions encouraging cure represents a number of con cerned students with serious concerns and serious ways of presenting them and they should be taken seriously said preston parr dean of student life his comment agrees with the reaction of two other deans to cure george m ellis assistant dean of the college of arts and sciences said that he is " pleased to see that students are com mitted and active for a cause examina tion is & healthy sign certainly dissatis faction is a healthier state than an unexamined state parr went on to say " i think to have students concerned with the direction of the university can be useful and a real service and they should be dealt with in some or dered and institutional way i am glad to see arcadia playing a roll in response to these vital issues if students want to be heard they win have to find ways of making existing student institutions effective for that purpose.lt is far easier to repudiate than to modify but the task is to modify i hope that they cure will work together with rhc ifc and arcadia at the same time they talk with the administration william l quay assistant dean of student life was in agreement with cure's methods of demonstrating to ob tain th»ir goals he did disagree with their proposed method of selecting a student representative on the board of trustees cure has proposed that the president ap point a student who would be approved by themselves and by the president of ar cadia quay feels that the student should be selected by open election that way it would be completely democratic ellis expressed a concern with the degree of antagonism and emotionalism which seems to be evident in seme of the individuals in cure emotionalism weakens the cause of working together and cooperation is most essential if cure hopes to achieve its goals outright belligerency only hardens the line asked about their reactions to the en vironmental study all three were in agree ment that it should cause people to do some thinking but that u can only be a beginning more information is needed in this area b * w photo by butt in springtime at least this young man's fancy has turned upwards to the sun ho is obviously trying to make himself into the bronze god ho had always ima ginod himself to be before his pale houseparty date arrives rhc favors codes changes in the first mooting presided over by the newly elected officers residence halls council unanimously approved a motion calling for the repeal of the open door policy that is presently part of the uni versity social codes citing the responsibility of the student body as the major reason the motion was paralleled by a letter from theta chi calling for repeal of the open door policy and curfew for women guests the motion i being presented before all major student organizations on campus and will be forwarded to the social code committee and prevented for faculty ap proval in other business rhc authorised a change in the residence halls concessions charter which calls for a salary increase for the b««fn«»ss manager to f 300 per year and a 150 increase for the assistant business manager plus an additional 50 increase for summer work approval of council was sought on up coming contracts for linen and laundry see rhc page 9 see cure page 8
